Probably external. I had one at 6 weeks 4 days and it was external. Obviously drink plenty beforehand to push your uterus up. Hope all goes well!

Most like external, but things are still quite small at this stage, so may take a bit of finding. That silence when the ultrasound technician is searching feels like forever!
Best of luck for today. X

I had my first scan at 9+4 and it was an external one. Tiny wee tadpole but the heart beat was there and fairly obvious once the sonographer had told us where to look for it Wink .

do you actually get to hear the heartbeat?

We heard the heartbeat at 7 weeks during a private scan, which I think is the earliest they are seriously hoping to see one. At my 12 week scan (NHS) and a scan at 10.3 (private in Turkey), they could see the heart beat but we did not hear it aloud, which is normal I believe. I think there's a good chance you will see it, but perhaps not hear it. Good luck Smile

I had internal at 9 weeks because of a retroverted uterus, I didn't have an external til 12 weeks but it's likely yours will be external!
Just to add to what paper has said I didn't hear the heartbeat aloud either (not even at the 12 week scan which a lot of my friends heard there's).

Good luck !

It will likely be external, as long as you're not significantly overweight or have a retroverted (tilted backwards) uterus. I have the latter, so all of my early scans have been internal.

If you do have an internal, I PROMISE you it's nothing to worry about. It isn't uncomfortable or undignified in any way at all. You will have a towel or large sheet of paper stuff to cover your modesty and the sonographer will be very used to doing them.

As other ladies have said, the silence whilst they look around feels like forever but in reality is only a few seconds. It will be worth it when you see your little peanut Grin

Hope all goes well. Let us know how you get on.

Oh and re heartbeat, the earliest I heard it was 16 weeks with DS. I saw it at 6+4 with my second pregnancy, and 8+2 with this one.
