First trimester

Nearly 6 weeks pregnant and just cannot concentrate at work; all I think about is baby, baby, baby, baby. Clothes, nursery stuff, names, breastfeeding, pregnancy, midwife appointment, scans, telling family and friends..... I can't think about anything else! I've even been into Mothercare at lunch time just to look at everything and swoon.

Also, massively bloated (only a matter of time before someone asks if I've got a bun in the oven, surely?), itchy belly, too tired to do anything but knitting (bonus!) after work.......

All of this is "normal", right?!

Oh and roughly how long (is a piece of string) between first midwife appointment and first scan? My first m/w appointment not until June 30th, so I'll be 7 weeks. Just worried that they will only give me 24 hours notice and I've got to blag more time off work.

PS Super happy I am pregnant!!!! :D

Congratulations!!! I know where your 'at' been there... I'm 10ish weeks now...things do start to settle down esp when you realise it's a long loooooong road ahead! My first mw apt is today 10+3 after my last period and my first nhs scan is at 13+3.
If you do decide to have a private scan so you can meet your little bean (a lot of ladies do because it is so long until the nhs scans) then please hold off till atleast 9weeks then you'll see a little heartbeat and bean jumping about! We had puts when I thought I was around 9+6.
Keep looking at baby stuff it's a new exciting time for you! Wishing you an uneventful happy pregnancy

I was in the same situation as you but luckily I use to have to see specialist so when I have to have an appointment I use that as an excuse but come my dating scan in 2 weeks I will have to tell work cause I got three appointments within 2 weeks "/ oops haha xx and by the way WOO congratulations xx

vegangirl Thu 18-Jun-15 09:32:37

Good luck at your first midwife appointment!!

How do you know when you first scan is? Should I have had a letter? Or will my m/w sort that out on June 30th?

tinyme135 Thu 18-Jun-15 09:34:21

Mrschatty where can I go for a private scan, I'm a bit clueless about it.

And I forgot to say i told the doctor I was pregnant on the Thursday and by the Tuesday I saw my midwife then I've got to wait two weeks for my dating scan. I did have to wait 4 weeks for my scan but if you moan and say it's not on then they normally bring it forward, they always put mum and baby first.

tinyme135 Thu 18-Jun-15 09:35:13

My mw told me it'll come in the post so it's just a waiting game. But others tell you there and then

Nottalotta Thu 18-Jun-15 09:38:25

Your midwife will book you in for a scan. I was 7wks at my first mw appointment, and just over 12 for the scan. I got a letter through with the scan appointment.

I too was super excited those first few weeks and struggled to keep it to myself. It soon dawned on me though that it was a long road ahead and what with exhaustion and nausea, I calmed down somewhat!

When it came to telling people i had gone the other way and wanted to keep my secret!

bexx92 Thu 18-Jun-15 10:05:13

Congraulations! I am exactly the same - my first mw appointment is in two weeks, so I will be 8 weeks then, and I got a letter from local hosp last week with my scan date when I will be 12 wks. So exciting!x

mrschatty Thu 18-Jun-15 10:27:44

Where are you based TINY? I went to babybond in Stretford manchester but there is babybond locations all over the country I really recommend them!

tinyme135 Thu 18-Jun-15 10:57:04

I'm near Birmingham. Saw one place but love to hear other places. I also would love to have a 4d scan but saw the prices and I'm like will have to re think this one through xD

s098 Thu 18-Jun-15 11:47:46

How long did everyone have to wait for their scan appointment to come through the post? I saw the doctor 2 weeks ago tomorrow so was hoping it would of come by now! Have made an appointment with the midwife for the 1st July

IfYouWereARiverIdLearnToFloat Thu 18-Jun-15 12:01:11

My GP made my scan & consultant appointment but when I saw the MW at 7 weeks she was surprised as it's usually her that does that. I wondered if it was because I'm red pathway?

Had my scan this week & was 13+2. My MW also arranged an early scan at 7+1 for reassurance at the early pregnancy unit. We saw the heartbeat then.

tinyme135 Thu 18-Jun-15 12:26:02

I was meant to wait 4 weeks after my mw appointment but I moaned today about it saying ill be 15 weeks then snow it's only 2 weeks away

mmmuffins Thu 18-Jun-15 12:37:44

I called my GP at 5 weeks and my first appointment was scheduled for when I'm 12 weeks. I presume I get a scan at the booking-in session.

Most other posters seem to have been given an earlier booking-in session, I guess it varies by area?

s098 Thu 18-Jun-15 12:48:29

Think I might ring the doctors tomorrow then if the letter hasn't come today. Maybe this is just how long it takes but its a bit frustrating as if the dates the doctor worked it out from I'm already about 13 weeks

NickyEds Thu 18-Jun-15 12:50:18

mmmuffins Call them and check this. You would normally have your scan arranged at your booking in appointment. Due to general cock ups I didn't get booked in until 11 weeks this time, this had a knock on effect that my scan wasn't till i was 13+5. Baby just would not co operate and they couldn't do the nt measurement and there wasn't time to bring me back another day so I couldn't have the Downs Screening until 15 weeks. Nothing to worry about if you're not bothered about the screening but if you are I 'd request and earlier appointment.

EdgarAllenPoe Thu 18-Jun-15 13:26:58

Definitely check mmmuffins. I called my GP at 5 weeks and he said the midwife will call you but she never did. So I called the maternity ward myself (couldn't find any other numbers) and the GP never referred me! Once I was able to speak to a midwife, they arranged the booking app the next day (I was 10+3) and I should get a letter in the post for the scan around week 12. Glad I looked into it myself, my GP is usually great but on this occasion wasn't much use!

tinyme135 Thu 18-Jun-15 13:31:50

Wish my gp booked all my stuff I had to do it all on my own. He gave me their number and that was it. My midwife never booked my scan in the reception did and messed it up "/ sucks to be fair xx

mmmuffins Thu 18-Jun-15 14:48:42

Right I just called my GP and they said there was no scan at this appointment confused Which makes me wonder why I have to wait 7 weeks for my booking in appointment.

I said "shouldn't I having a scan about this time", and the reply was that midwife would book all that for me when I see her.

I'm now feeling unsure. If it takes 7 weeks to see the midwife, how easy is it to get a scan booked :/

I do very much want to have all the necessary health tests on the baby, what is the time limit for them? I am currently 9.5 weeks.

vegangirl Thu 18-Jun-15 15:01:13

..............and i just had a complete breakdown at my desk, crying everything, stupid argument with my other half, I even threatened the unmentionable........ I was going to the gym tonight but I'm going home to cry instead. Bloody hormones sad

vegangirl Thu 18-Jun-15 15:06:28

AND I've had to reduce my citalopram (anti-depressants) from 20mg to 10mg instantly so feeling extra volatile sad

mmmuffins I think you're ok as long as you get a scan by 13 weeks at the very latest; you've just cause to have a moan at your GP/MW if they can't sort it out before then.

Brummiegirl15 Thu 18-Jun-15 18:10:59

Tiny I'm in the Midlands.

MUMS in Solihull do early scans - they are about £80

tinyme135 Thu 18-Jun-15 19:36:33

Oh that's great I'll look into it smile thank you for telling me x

themumfairy Thu 18-Jun-15 19:37:07

I'm the same. my first midwife appointment is June 30th too smile
I'm 7 weeks tomorrow but I'm looking like 7 months from all the bloating. I had to tell work yday as I'd rather it came from me than gossip x

NickyEds Thu 18-Jun-15 19:51:32

mmmuffins 14 weeks is the limit to do the nt measurement for the Downs Screening. The main issue could be if you have an uncooperative baby (like mine!)and need to be brought back at a later date or your dates are slightly out. If they can't do it you'll be offered a Quad blood test which is around 15/16 weeks but it's not quite as accurate (it's more likely to give you a higher risk). Ring the gp back and bug them about it. At my booking in the mw went on about how they "would definitely get me in before 14 weeks" which, technically they did but it doesn't leave any wriggle room.
