Amoxicillin 500mg - 8 weeks pregnant

Hi everyone, I was just wondering if anyone else had been prescribed amoxicillin 500mg (three times a day), whilst pregnant?. I have had a UTI for about 4 weeks now and was prescribed Nitrofurantoin (4 times a day) but can't remember the dose. I took this for a week and uti improved but it came back very quickly after finishing the course. I then gave a sample which was taken to the lab and after a week or so I was prescribed Nitrofurantoin again (same dose and again for 7 days).

I finished this course on Friday and yesterday I had to go to the out of hours service as the UTI was back with a vengeance. I was seen by a very nice nurse practitioner who prescribed the 500mg of amoxicillin. I don't know why but I am worried about the prescription and when I looked on the nhs website it said amoxicillin should only be prescribed in pregnancy if needed. This just seemed odd to me. Will ring my GP tomorrow to double check. But as I have been taking the tablets in the meantime, any info from you lovely folk would be most welcome. Thanks :)

Yes,I've had antibiotics in both my pregnancies. An infection is much more dangerous than antibiotics as it can cause premature birth if left untreated. I assume you told the nurse you are pregnant?

I was prescribed it for a uti at 36w pregnant. I thought it was quite a high dose but it was only 3 days. DD appears to be okay so far (3w)

I think I decided the consequences of an untreated uti were worse than whatever % of the amoxicillin went through the placenta.

I had this exact dosage around 6 weeks pregnant for pleurisy. Best to sort the infection out so they don't need to ramp up the drugs further. I took as advised til the end of the week's course to make sure it was gone. Don't worry-just get better!

Thank you so much for responding quickly guys. Yes, I did tell the nurse I was 8 weeks, AbbeyRoadCrossing, so I don't really know why the prescription worried me but it has! I had a MC in Jan so probably just on heightened alert I guess.
Congratulations Trilbydoll on the arrival of your DD!
Thanks MotherBare, it is reassuring that others have been prescribed it in early pregnancy too. I have a five day course, so will just take it until the end and hopefully I will finally get rid of this UTI!

I think it's normal to worry!
I should've said, DS is fine and I had my 20 week scan last week with this one and all fine. I hope that helps and you feel better soon.

Amoxacillin is safe to have when pregnant. UTI 's can get nasty very quickly so antibiotics definatly the better option! Hope it clears up quickly!

I was prescribed these for a sinus infection in the first trimester. Was told it was better to have them than the infection.

Thank you everyone. I feel much better about it and the UTI seems to be improving! Spoke to my own GP yesterday and again she confirmed that it is fine to take in pregnancy.
