This might be a silly question but how far gone have you got to be for a pregnancy test to show positive? I heard that it's about 4 weeks but I dunno how true that is.

that depends on the sensitivity of the test. First Response promises a result 6 days before your missed period, but most recommend testing only from the day of your missed period, which would for an average cycle mean about 4 weeks pregnant.

Oh so if someone done a cheap test and it shows up positive it'll mean your more than likely Atleast 4 weeks gone

Cheap ones (pee in a cup) show up a week before you`re late.

Cheap tests showed positive at about 3.5 weeks for me.

Sorry if you already know this, but if someone is 4 weeks pregnant this means that it is 4 weeks since their last period. It doesn't meant 4 weeks since you had sex. I get the feeling you are trying to work out who the father might be of your or a friends pregnancy. Sorry if I'm wrong.

Well I went to the midwife and she thinks I'm 9 weeks gone but I dunno how i am cause 5 weeks before hand I was showing neg so I was trying to work it out if it's cause the test only shows if your 4 weeks gone and all that.

it's entirely possible to get a false negative - test not sensitive enough or diluted pee, especially if you didn't do the test first thing in the morning.

It will be nine weeks from the first day that you had your last period. If it's been longer since your last period, you are further along in the pregnancy. If your last period was sooner, then you are less further along.

If you don't know when your last period was, then it's best to be honest with the midwives (not guess), and they can refer you to have an early scan, which will be much more accurate in working out where you are in the pregnancy.

9 weeks pregnant does not mean "you have been pregnant for nine weeks".

So assuming you had totally average cycles, this would mean that you got pregnant roughly seven weeks ago. But you don't get a positive test the moment that you get pregnant - it can take up to two weeks or more for your hormones to get high enough for a test to detect it.

So say your hormones took two weeks to get high enough, that would mean that you would start testing positive roughly five weeks ago.

But all of this is assuming you had very regular standard cycles.

Sew I told the midwife I ain't got a clue cause I suffer with pcos and it was her who said I'm probably 9 weeks and won't give me an early scan so that's why I'm trying to figure it out

tiny how long are your cycles generally? I have pcos and the midwife told me to use a clear blue test which shows up to 5 weeks- do you think that would be helpful? Is it 9 weeks since your last period then?

Sometimes I can have a period for 3 weeks and nothing for 6 months and sometimes I can have a normal cycle. I used a clear blue one and it stated I was 3 weeks + which is est. 5-6 weeks

And how long ago was that? Are you having nausea/ morning sickness? If so when did it start? Were you trying for a baby? Is there anyway you can work out roughly from when you dtd with your dp?

End of march beginning of April. We've been trying since November. I started to notice that I was feeling more sick than normal (I have stomach problems which cases me to feel nauseous nearly everyday) was about 4/5 weeks ago. While I was on holiday we went on a boat trip and for the first time I was actually sea sick so that made me think there was something wrong.

Definitely sounds like you are about 9 weeks then. Tbh it doesn't really matter how far you are as long as it is correct to within a couple of weeks, and the midwife has obviously erred on the side of caution so in the event that you are less than she thinks when you have the 12 week scan and they date you properly, if they are too early to do a nuchal test they can always reschedule and do it a week or two later. If you haven't joined the jan 16 ante-natal thread yet then I recommend it

Yeah I think I'm about 9 weeks cause the tiredness is slowly going and I'm eating a lot more as appetite is slowly coming back. Thanks for all your help :) I was getting a bit confused haha xx

You could pay for a private early scan if they won't let you have one on the NHS. My early scan was very reassuring.
