Teacher advice! Promotions and telling work.

I'm between 5/6 weeks (unsure because of very irregular cycle) and applied for a temp promotion at work. I'm a teacher in a secondary school. I then found out I was pregnant. I have an interview very soonfor the role but now feel horribly guilty about school not knowing I am preg. The role is a maternity cover (ironic I know) and I would be due in the feb a few months before the other woman would return. It's also a role than needs someone present in school past feb and can't really be unmanned so to speak.. Do I tell them? I'm possibly the only candidate also...!

I'm also massively nervous about the whole pregnancy thing and have generally been very anxious about everything to do with it! I go to the doctor tomorrow to have first chat and hopefully he can answer my billions of questions..!!

No don't tell them as nothing's certain until after 12 weeks. Get the job, then tell them after 12 weeks so your options are open.

Hi OP, you don't actually need to tell work until you are 20 weeks anyway tbh. I know what you mean though, it is a difficult one.

I'd wait until you're at least 12 weeks to say anything, how do they know you didn't find out you were pregnant till after you took the job? Wink

It's true that you don't have to tell them til 25 weeks but as it's for a temp post it won't look good if you keep it to yourself too long. The idea behind being able to go for promotions, get paid while off and not be discriminated against while pregnant, is that you'd want the job on your return from mat leave. In your case you sound like the best person for it anyway. Be honest as people usually value and reward that. But not yet!

Would your promotion being temporary affect your contract? I'd worry about my legal rights if my contract was then classed as temporary?

I think my user names has changed.. But I'm the OP!

The role would be sept to june(ish) so there would be 5 months where it wouldn't be filled and obviously the original person would be back when I returned.

I actually ended up telling the head this morning and he was really nice about the whole thing. I just said I didn't want to lie or keep things back when I know it would have an affect on school. He asked me to still attend the interview and said he won't tell the rest of the panel (or anyone else) as I don't want people to know as its so soon. I feel a massive sense of relief and if anything the thought of keeping it hidden seems very disrespectful.

Thanks for all the advice!
