Rib pain at 37+6

Holden10 · 15/05/2015 07:00

On my right side only. Can't get a full breath for the agony. Can't move. Feel like my ribs are broken but only on the right. If this carries on, labour is going to be a bloody nightmare! Anyone got any sneaky tips to make it stop!

OMG! I'm 30 weeks and had this since about 20 weeks. Mine is on left side and is awful. Cant sleep properly and sitting at my desk all day is just a nightmare. Have u been to go? Right side rib pain might be connected to ur liver do just get it checked. Other Than that refer urself to physio and get son painkillers from ur gp (8/50) co codamol are safe. Xx

How is your blood pressure Holden?

Hopefully you have gone to a and e and got checked out. Rib pain can be a sign or pre eclampsia so its best to get checked out x

I went to a and e. Bp was 156/100 but I was told this was normal - I know for a fact it isn't normal, it's been going up for two weeks and midwife is concerned cos it was very low all the way through til recently and I'm being closely monitored now. They established I don't have blood clots on my lungs, cos of location of the pain. and now I'm home again. Didn't even do a wee test. I'm actually a bit furious I wish they'd dipped urine for protein :( I can hardly breathe but done all I can now.

156/100 is very high and dangerous. Call your midwife and explain what has happened.

Do you not have a maternity assessment unit at your hospital?

I feel like I've bugged mw all week and I know for a fact she's clocked off now :( unfortunately my local hospital doesn't have maternity facilities so I'm booked in at one further away to give birth. I was at the further hospital on weds worried about my ever rising bp and pain in my ribs but whilst there bp stayed low and had no protein etc, so they put the pains down to muscle strain and sent me on my merry way. Much like today. I think I will just have to suck it up til I see mw on Tuesday.

I would call the further away hospital and see what they say.

Did your BP go down at all whilst at A+E?

Report
Holden10 · 15/05/2015 16:24

They only did it the once. I am wondering if it went up because I am short of breath. I really can't decide what to do for the best as I feel as though I'm making a fuss over a pulled muscle.

Hmm, that is kinda high. Once the bottom hits 100 they are usually concerned, have you any swelling, sudden or otherwise, nausea, dizziness, headache, visual disturbances? They usually ask if you have upper gastric pain when they suspect pre eclampsia, which can be up under your ribs to the right. But at the same time, you could just have high bp and separate rib pain. Check your bp and check it a few times to see what it does, if it's lower check it again in a few hours, and rest until then. If it's still high I'd call the hospital you're booked in to.

Is your baby breech by any chance? Mine was and she had folded herself under my ribs and the pain was unbearable. She was born on Monday via c section and the pain instantly disappeared. Hope you are both ok.

I have been having my bp monitored by docs the last couple of days. Gp called maternity triage who advised they only get concerned when bp is 160/90 or over, I would be going to your nearest maternity triage to get checked out of I was you

Thanks everyone. Baby is head down and the pain is where he has been viciously kicking recently, I almost think he's cracked a rib! I have had headaches but nothing serious. BP is 128/83 at last measurement so I think I'm okay. Thanks for all your help everyone you're all lovely and I'm so glad this website is here.

I was admitted when mine was 193/100-180/102, but I also had swelled up massively in 3 days and had protein in my urine. If I had just had the bp that high they would've just told me to come back and get it checked again in a few days. 140/90 with no swelling and no protein 2 weeks earlier wasn't concerning them at all. As another comparison they decided on emcs when it was 183/110.

I had seizures at 220/110 and spent a week in ITU with baby. It was not a pleasant experience and considering I had been totally well throughout my pregnancy came as a real shock. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
