Alternative to pregnancy vitamins at 13 weeks?

Amyyy27 · 09/05/2015 09:25

I suffer from awful sickness and the pregnancy vitamins are just too big I can't keep them down/swallow them.

What would you recommend to take instead? Could I take a multi vit or something similar?

I wouldn't bother with them if they make you feel sick.

I have stopped taking pregnacare since my scan showed baby was well. But due to extreme sickness I'm not eating much and not getting any nutrients which is showing in my terrible skin and exhaustion! I was hoping there would be just a normal vitamin I could take which isn't huge and possibly vitamin D?

Floradix or others from the same manufacturer? Highly absorbable and consist of natural extracts. Also Spatone?

Go and ask the pharmacist. I got the healthy start ones. They are free in Scotland for low income but don't know if get in England. They were so much better. You need to be careful as too much of some cvits are potentially harmful. There are alternatives to the bullets of pregnacare. I also used to take mine just before bed as this helped me feel less sick.

Don't take any non preg vitamins but lots of other brands than pregnacare I mean

Thanks for the suggestions, I should have said I've tried pregnacare, seven seas, centrum pregnancy and sanatogen mum to be. All too big. I've then been in the shops and opened up the boxes and they are all the same size :( the only time I can take the tablet is on an evening after food so I am aware of that but thank you!

Also I'm not eligible for the sure start ones.

Is anyone aware of any pregnancy ones that are smaller and can be taken throughout pregnancy?

Could you break the tablets up? Or crush them?

Don't take non pregnancy ones without checking with a pharmacist as can contain stuff that is bad.

Should also say my sickness is from HG not the tablets! So will still be sick without taking them, hence wanting some vitamins in me :)

Be very careful with generic multivitamins. Some contain large amounts of vitamin A which can be very harmful to baby.

I believe that Berocca is safe during pregnancy if you can stomach it but please check this with a doctor or pharmacist.

That's what I thought Mara, was hoping someone would know any that are safe to take.

I take b vitamins supplement vitamin d complex.
Take iron intermittently.
And I also should take fish/ omega oils but I don't like them so eat fish insteadGrin

(Am not a nutritionalist so that s not a recommendation! )

Don't know about sizes, but please don't take none pregnancy bits with vitamin A in. That is the major difference between pregnancy suitable and normal bits.

Can you find a liquid supplement for pregnancy? Or ask the pharmacist about crushing the tablets. I would imagine they would be OK crushed, but you should always check before cutting or crushing any tablet.

I take just boots folic acid + vit D (in a grey pot). They are tiny pills.

I had a similar problem with taking vitamins while pregnant. I asked the midwife about it and she said that I just shouldn't take any vitamins. She said that the body stores plenty of vitamins for the baby and the mum for the full duration and even right after the pregnancy.

I was having a hard time with eating during pregnancy and was barely able to eat anything until I was around 22 weeks.

I don't think crushing would work for me unfortunately. I can't stomach much as it is. Will see about liquid though thanks :)

turquoise where did you find out about taking those? I don't really know where to start looking at what should be taken. My midwife very helpfully suggested 'well just take a pregnancy vitamin like pregnacare' clearly hadn't listened at all!

tango I'm pleased you suggested those I spotted them yesterday. Shook them and they didn't sound big but obviously couldn't open! Do you know are those fine to take all the way through?

Thanks you it'sonly I was worried I hadn't taken any for a few days so that's reassuring :)

I just take folic acid and vitamin d, which are both tiny, and floradix for the iron (as I tend to get anaemic).

If I need to take bigger tablets, I take them with a spoonful of yoghurt, much better than water.

Amyyy27 · 09/05/2015 10:19

I had a quick search of floradix and there are different bottles, which one do you take? And thanks for the tip I never thought of yoghurt! (Water makes me vom!)

I've been taking tests own brand of Berrocca. There's no vit a in them. Then just vit d on top of that.

I too suffered badly from sickness. Couldn't get the pregnancy tablets down. Found the drink easier as could sip it.

Hope you start feeling better soon Flowers

I have just taken folic acid until 12wks and vit D all the way through. On the approval of my midwife. Anything with iron in it makes me awfully constipated and ALL pregnancy vits have iron!
