really need to advice from other mums. I'm not taking any meds at the min but really struggling with my moods. Been prescribed 20mg of fluoxetine. But worried about the effect on my unborn baby an can is still breast feed while taking it? Has anyone been through this? I was on fluoxetine after my 2nd bird for post natal depression but was weened off before I fell pregnant.

I was offered fluoxetine when I was 30 weeks, but the psychiatrist said i would have to change to sertraline when the baby was born as fluoxetine wasn't suitable for breastfeeding. He said it was a tricky transition but possible. Can you get some advice from a psychiatrist or your consultant? So sorry you are struggling.

I've been on fluoxetine throughout this pregnancy (28weeks currently). Consultant ran through risks, which include possible low birth weight. The baby might experience withdrawal when born, so consultant advised me to breastfeed for at least a few days (I wasn't planning on doing it at all) to help as the amount the baby will receive through breast milk is lower than it'll get through the placenta. No idea about the longer term with breastfeeding though, sorry

The psychiatrist told me it was fine but when I had the baby all the paediatric advice was it wasn't advised. I was told to come off it and pump for a few days then I could breastfeed. I ended up bottle feeding though. I had tried to come off at week 30 but had a tough time so didn't fancy changing meds and having a new born.

There are anti depressants suitable for breast feeding. I'd see if you can go on one of those instead.

20mg is a very low dose and baby will be fine. Many woman have given birth on it. There is a slight withdrawal which can make them slow to feed but I couldn't say Ifound it noticeable

Try the Drugs In Breastmilk Helpline 0844 412 4665 or on FAcebook as breastfeeding and medication. Run by an absolutely brilliant pharmacist on a voluntary basis - she knows all there is to know and will not give you the risk averse, overly cautious responses advocated by the pharma companies.

I'm not an expert but bf both my DSs whilst taking fluoxetine 9 and 10 years ago. I know this isn't a scientific finding but both my sons are totally fine and my psychiatrist still endorses fluoxetine for bf mums.
