Dehydration

I have bad 'morning' sickness and couldn't keep anything down yesterday. I have bad days and slightly better days but was wondering at what point am I so dehydrated that I need to go to hospital for a drip?

I saw the doctor before Christmas and she gave me anti sickness tablets but they didn't work and made me sick when I took them. She also said that I was dehydrated but suggested a sip of water every five minutes and not to go to A&E as it was so busy that I would have to wait ages to be seen.

Any advice welcome.

Last place you want to be at the moment is a busy germ ridden hospital ward ... you can always take a urine sample to your go surgery and ask for it to be tested for signs of dehydration but you can see yourself too ... If it's getting dark in colour, smells strong and is more orange than yellow/clear then up your water intake ... headaches can also signify a need to up your intake ... aim to drink at least a half pint over an hour ... With so much d&v around at the moment you really need to steer clear of hospital if you can ... its rife and the last thing you need on top of morning sickness!

Does your hospital have a maternity assessment unit? Or can you phone the ward for advice? Or buy ketostix's from boots to dip test your own urine?

If not, either just go to A&E or go back to gp for different anti-sickness/assessment.

I couldn't keep anything down and was so dehydrated I couldn't pee at one point. I should have went to A&E, instead I soldiered on and got a severe cramp in my leg that left me unable to walk properly for almost a week.

I'd say a trip to A&E is worth it. hindsight is a wonderful thing Dehydration is not good for you or baby.

I was started on cyclizine which I can keep down and has done wonders for me but there are other meds out there that your gp can prescribe.

I could be wrong, but when I has severe morning sickness I could tell I was dehydrated by my lips being dried out. I got to the point of not being able to drink and spent a few days in hospital. I was given ondansteron (excuse the spelling) and it was brilliant. If you feel dehydrated see another Dr and have your urine checked, just tell them you can barely drink. You and your baby shouldn't have to suffer so badly. Keep trying to drink through the day, I found lemon squash easier. And if you feel its a losing battle please seek help from the Dr or hospital. Hope you feel better soon

Thank you everyone, I have booked an appointment with the doctors for 11 and they said that they will give me a note for Emergency Care if need be.

My lips are extremely dry and I am struggling to drink.

Roll on the blooming stage of pregnancy!
