I'm a first timer & feel like I'm expanding daily. My hips, thighs & bum are growing along with my bump. I've developed some lovely back boobs & it's uncomfortable to wear knee high boots so I assume my calves are bigger. When I look in the mirror I look overall curvaceous. My question is why do some people gain weight all over as well as a bump & why do some just grow a bump? Are the just bump people more likely to be the ones who snap back into shape? I'm getting worried as I'm a bridesmaid 3 months post baby & thinking I'm going to need one of those vacuum pack things to get me into the dress Confused

I'm interested in the answer to this too! I'm 18 weeks and want to avoid ballooning as well. How far along are you?

I'm guessing that it works the same as when you're not pregnant, ie, you'll put on weight if you're consuming more calories than you're burning, so I'm making sure I don't eat more than I used to and have just started exercising again.

I say all this after being very unhealthy since finding out I was pregnant - the morning sickness made me feel so wretched that I just couldn't face exercising and all my willpower went out the window!

Could be water retention which is very common in pregnancy, or could be that you've gained weight rather than just baby weight.

Bear in mind that to others it'll probably just look like all you've done is grow a bump, it's likely you're the only one aware of how much you've put on elsewhere.

I've gotten to 32 weeks and been extremely lucky in that I am literally all bump. I can still hide being pregnant if I lay flat! I havent been eating especially healthy, and havent been exercising.

Bump is very neat, measurements are fine, just looks all bump! Still getting into my over knee boots etc, have put literally nothing on anywhere else. I always thought I'd be the person that blew up everywhere, but havent so far. Always time I suppose!

Dont think there is anything you can do about it. Every woman's body prepares for pregnancy differently.

I'm a few days off 24 weeks. I had water retention as soon as found out I was pregnant not been able to wear my wedding rings in a while now. Just this week noticed my feet/ankles swelling at night but it's gone if I keep my feet up. I was still at the gym in the beginning but then I had horrendous hyperemis sickness and now I only walk & do antenatal yoga. I hardly ate when I was sick & lost 7lbs but since 20 weeks my bump has just popped & I just feel like I'm expanding daily. I've gone up at least one dress size, huge boobs. I was eating a lot of sweets over Xmas but I've cut them out now. I don't think I over eat, but I eat different from what I did pre-pregnancy as I ate low carb, but now I eat carbs!

I think it really just depends, with my first pregnancy I was sooo swollen and watery, I looked full term when I was hardly 20 weeks and looked huge all over, I eat everything in sight and didn't do any exersice. I went from 8 stone to 11 and a half and delivered at 37 weeks, the weight came off within 3 months but took me over a year to be as toned again.

This pregnancy, I've managed to eat relatively healthy 80% of the time and keep my exersice routine up! I do look much better than I did at 24 weeks with my first and it does look all bump but I'm still 15-16 lbs up! I've been taking regular Epsom salt baths in case of fluid retention.

I do genuinely think it just depends on the pregnancy, every person and every pregnancy is different. If you're making an effort to eat healthy (once you start feeling slightly more human) and remain active, there's not much else you can do to control how your body reacts to pregnancy!
