No. Not til 16 weeks onwards at your first MW appt after your 12 weeks scan.

All being well, you should see the heartbeat, but I don't remember hearing it at that stage.

Unfortunately, assuming you're only about 8-10 weeks, you won't as it's not detectable yet. You should hear it at your scan though.

No. Booking appointment is all admin - nothing to check you are pregnant or check you out, apart from weigh you and take blood. Just form filing in admin for notes. May ask you where want to give birth so book scan at same place if choose a hospital etc.

No. The earliest you will hear it is at 16 weeks and in many places it's not policy to listen in then either, because it can be difficult to find and cause unnecessary anxiety. At 12 and 20 week scans they sometimes turn the sound on to listen to heartbeat and to blood flow in the umbilical cord. It is checked at every appointment >20 weeks.

Hi, congrats!! No not at your booking appointment, if I remember correctly it was at about 15-16 weeks when I first heard the heartbeat, it's after your first scan.

ok thanks. so i need to wait until 12 week scan to make sure everything is ok? what will happen at booking appt? With my son (now 8) everything was done through my gp so this is a bit different for me xxx

Obviously this varies from area to area... In ours, booking and nt scan happen back to back in the same appointment!

I had my first antenatal a couple of weeks ago and didn't. I would've been 5 and a half weeks

My booking appt recently was:

  • blood tests, weigh me
  • ask where want to give birth
  • book 12 week scan
  • give me pile of leaflets/Emma's diary/bounty pack ( still not opened)
  • went through previous pregnancy/birth
  • asked about mine and partners health history and medication
  • filled in all booking in sections on form, including medications on etc
  • asked if I suffer from domestic abuse - she said they have to ask this 3 times before birth ( she made a fuss about dh not going in as had to ask, yet never bothered to ask at subsequent apt's when I was on my own!!)
  • filled in mental health screen so if needed could refer to peri-natal team ( not needed)
  • booked my next apt for 16 weeks. Get 3 less apt's she said as 2nd baby.
  • gave me my handheld notes. Told me to being urine sample at 16 weeks.

I didn't get to hear my baby's HB until 25 weeks! Booking in appointment is very boring and mainly filling out paperwork.

I asked my midwife at my 16 week appointment and she said they don't listen to it until your 25 week appointment. Although because I had asked and had haf a bad week she took pity on me and let me listen to it. No harm in asking at your 16 weeks :) I couldn't hear it on the scan, could only see it

Didn't get to hear mine till my consultant appt at 19wks. MWs don't like to do it so early now, if they have trouble finding baby it can cause upset and stress for mummy. Congratulations on your pregnancy Smile

Wow this makes me realise how good our hospital is! Saw heartbeat at 10 weeks at EPU, heard it lots at 12 week scan (14 weeks pregnant), heard it last week at 16 week appointment (18 weeks pregnant). And everyone gets a 30-ish week scan as standard!!

I would have hated having to wait so long for confirmation the baby is alive and well, poor you! :(

Congratulations on your pregnancy OP :)

I saw my baby's heartbeat on 12 week scan but didn't hear it and had my 16 week app with midwife on Tuesday which was just going through my blood test results. I think she said they will listen to it at 20 week scan.

My mw found the baby's heartbeat at my booking in appt. I think I was just over 10 weeks. It did take a while though and I don't think it's routinely done.

Saw bubs heart beat at 8 week emergency scan, 12 weeks scan, & 20 weeks scan. Saw and heard heart beat at private gender scan around 18 weeks. They didn't listen for the heart beat until 22 weeks for me.

OP - you won't find out 'if everything is OK' until your 20 week scan. The 12 week scan is purely for measurements to get accurate dates, take a nuchal fold measurement (part of the test of risk for Down's Syndrome) and to see if a heartbeat can be seen. This scan is not done at the booking in as i) you are usually not advanced enough in the pregnancy and ii) the ultrasound is done by a radiographer (booking in is done by a midwife) in a different location to your routine midwife appointments.
