Hi all, I have just found out that I'm 5 weeks pregnant Grin. As it's christmas in a few weeks and I don't want to announce the pregnancy for 3 months does anyone have any suggestions how I can avoid alcohol without anyone having suspicions as my family and a few close friends know I was trying to get pregnant. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks

Just tell them you're not drinking just in case your lucky enough to get pregnant... If they are rude enough to speculate on your fertility, then they can have too much info!!

If you come up with a solution let me know. I'm staying with both families and it's going to be impossible. I think I'm going to have to spill as they'll out me when I refuse a drink.

You're on a course of antibiotics? I used that one and no one questioned it Smile I hate that people can't say no to a drink without people assuming these things though, bloody annoying!

Congratulations btw Thanks

Congratulations! I'm 5 wks today but it's going to be impossible to hide from my parents/siblings over Christmas because we're staying with them, pub is walking distance etc... So we're going to pay for an early scan and tell them on Christmas Eve I think, all being well.

You can try to pretend drink (eg elderflower cordial and tonic with a slice of lemon so it looks like g&t) but that would be quite difficult unless you're at your own house I think! Good luck!

Thanks all! My partners parents live next door so can't use the excuse about driving Confused. They are big drinkers too. I am going to use the excuse that I am on antibiotics when I go out on my works christmas party too! Wink

I said I had gastroenteritis when I was about 6 weeks pg and didn't want to reveal all to my family. No one questioned it and it was a good excuse for hardly eating anything too!

I would tell family and use the antibiotics line at work. Work might well guess but will be too polite to say anything.

Depending on format of your work do, it might be easy to avoid by ordering drinks that resemble a g&t. Obviously if you're sitting down for dinner and not partaking in the wine it's a bit trickier so you may have to pull the antibiotics line.

My (male - so defo not preg!) friend turned up at our place yesterday and couldn't drink because he'd had a dental procedure and a particular kind of painkiller that you can't drink on. Somehow throwing in the dental procedure gives it more weight.

My friend said that she had a water infection and thats why she couldn't drink, didn't question it as alcohol would be the last thing that anyone would want with a water infection, I was lucky that the Macmillan gosober for a month was on when I needed to hide it

This was me last year and my friends and family didn't suspect a thing!! I avoided the Xmas do, it's well known that I like a drink so it would have been obvious. When someone offered me a drink I'd say I'm ok for now thanks then go and get myself a drink a little while later, poured myself a glass of appletizer that I'd hid in my bag, they were none the wiser. They did comment on how little I ate though, I just kept saying did you see how much I had on my plate! If friends of mine said they were on antibiotics I'd probably guess tbh, not many antibiotics these days that you can't have a drink with

Recovering from vomititing bug is a good one, especially if you have morning sickness and are stuggling to eat anyway.

Congratulations
Urine infection is a good one.
My in laws like a drink too and I somehow managed to get away with not drinking for the first twelve weeks over the summer bbq period. I was sneaky and I walked around with a bottle of beer and then secretly put the non alcoholic one in a glass. That sort of thing. It was quite fun.

Say you are trying to limit your calorie intake as you don't want to gain a lot of wait over Christmas with all the nice food out as well.

HazleNutt · 09/12/2014 10:53

unless people are buying rounds, they will probably not notice. Just have a glass in front of you on the table and fiddle with it every now and then - most people won't pay attention that you're not refilling it really. If buying your own drinks, get something that looks like a cocktail - pure tonic instead of vodka and tonic for example.

I will be 12 weeks on Christmas Eve but can't have my scan until later which is annoying as, all being well, it would have been lovely news to give at Christmas! I have told my parents and I have to say I don't think friends would speculate to my face (they might mention it to each other behind my back!). One of my best friends has just announced her pregnancy at 13 weeks and we have all knows for weeks and weeks, it was obvious at social occasions. However none of us said anything to her as we respected her right to keep it to herself until she was ready to share.

I was about 8 weeks pregnant at Christmas three years ago. I did a mixture of nominated driver, pretending to have really overdone it at a Christmas do so not being able to face it, and having a glass of wine in front of me which DH drank. I also confided in one work colleague who drank my wine and swapped glasses with me throughout the evening. People didn't notice.
This year I'll be 39 weeks pregnant at Christmas- so no expectation from anyone to be drinking! Xmas Grin

Congratulations! I'd just order soft drinks and mumble something about antibiotics for a UTI if anyone asked. Have a lovely Christmas with this lovely news!

Report
NewEraNewMindset · 09/12/2014 11:09

Be very specific and detailed as to what you are on antibiotics for. Ie you have a UTI that's been hanging around for ages, it's very painful to have a wee and the doctors have you put you on a high strength antibiotic to try and shift it.

Everyone will look thoroughly uncomfortable and leave you alone entirely Grin

Antibiotics works but I know a few people who would drink on them just the same not me as a student, oh no so I'd maybe reinforce by saying you have a liver issue. Double whammy there - can't drink due to the ABs, can't drink due to the liver issue and of course you're going to be having bloods taken too so can't even have a sneaky one... Also, the liver stuff is not technically a lie, just a very stretchy truth, especially the bloods bit Smile

ClariceBeanthatsme · 09/12/2014 11:17

Congratulations Smile
Just remember these lies you will telling your beloved family and friends will be revealed as big fat lies in about 7 weeks...

I'd go for the antibiotics line and no1 will question! When I wasn't telling anyone about this preg and was at a party I didn't put in the kitty and bought my own drinks, bought a mini (1glass) bottle of wine and mixed it with lemonade, 1/3wine to 2/3s lemonade, no 1 questioned as they just thought I was sitting with wine in front of me and thought I was mixing it so that I wouldn't be hungover for getting my son early the next day! Tho they didn't realise how much I was watering wine down as they were all too drunk, think I got 3 or 4 glasses outta 1 wee tiny bottle ha ha

I second fiddling with a drink in front of you. I became pro at taking drinks with me to fetch things from kitchen for example and tipping some away whilst there, and at getting my DH to have sips of my drinks too to take my level in the glass down (ok if your partner is quite tolerant of drink! )
