What clothes are everyone buying for newborn and sizes?

What does everyone buy for small babies and in what sizes?

I'm mainly looking at NEXT for baby grows and vests and thinking 1 month and 3 month sizes will suffice for the first few months. Is it worth me buying first size as well?? I don't want to spend what is quite a lot of money on something if it's going to hardly get any use!

Do people bother with little outfits for small babies?

I haven't bothered with first size this time around and have gone straight to 0-3 months. Actually I think I have one pack of first size vests and that's it, but I didn't buy them my mum did. DD was 7lb 14oz when born and her first size clothes lasted no longer than a few weeks, such a waste.

I bought newborn next sleepsuits for DD and they fitted her great for 2-3 weeks. She was 8lb 7oz. I took the same ones to the hospital when having DS. He was 9lb 10oz and 56cm. The midwife had to send DH for bigger ones as they were faaaar too tiny! Up to 1 month is good, but it will still be large on even the bigger babies.

Next sleepsuits come up very large, DD was 7lbs 12oz and the 1 month stuff didn't fit her until she was about 3 months! Even the first size stuff from Next was roomy.

My baby was able to wear newborn until he was about 8 1/2 pounds. If you have vomit or leaky nappies you can easily get through 3-4 sleepsuits a day. It takes up a lot of baby clothes to fill a washing machine so I was happy to have quite a lot of little clothes. You can always get more after they're born.

Dd1 was in newborn stuff until she was 2 months old,was 7lb 3oz at birth. Ds1 was in newborn stuff for 1 week! With all other children. I didn't bother with newborn clothes

We bought a small amount of newborn outfits, and mostly 0-3 months we were told he was going to big. Ds made a surprise entrance 6 weeks early and my mum was sent out to go get preemie baby grows. He has lived mostly in baby grows but I love dressing him up and now he is 11 weeks he wears a mixture!

DS was 9lb 6oz but the 0-3 stuff drowned him! (He was 50th centile for height, which might make a difference!). We had mainly bought 0-3 stuff as expected a big baby, and he would have been ok with just that, but I really appreciated the bag of newborn stuff i got from freecycle

Hit post too soon. Dd at 8lb3 never fitted into New Baby but I had made the mistake of thinking 0-3 was the next size & they swamped her so sent out for 0-1mth. She wasn't in them for more than 3 weeks but they got a lot of washing in those 3 weeks! I didn't bother with new baby this time around, just got 0-1 & 0-3 in case baby is bigger than expected.

I think the key is you just never know what you're going to get! Big baby it small. Buy a couple of packs of 1 month and 0-3 and it's no great effort to send someone to a 24hr supermarket for the right size once little one is here

My DS was ove eight pound but 96 percentile for height- straight into 0-3 month

Depends on your baby entirely. DD1 was born 2.5kg (5lb something). DD2 was born 6lb. Can't remember how long DD1 was in newborn size. But DD2 is 8 weeks and is still in newborn size. Wouldn't fit 0-3mo at birth at all.

DS was 7lb & he wore 0-1 month for the first 5-6 weeks. 0-3 was far too big. I wouldn't bother with first size.

My DD is 6 weeks and has only just grown out of her up to one month Next baby grows and it is only that the legs are too short. If I didn't have a friend who is due in Jan I'd cut the feet off and put socks on her and they'd probably last a few more weeks but I'd rather pass them on. Her mothercare newborn ones still fit whereas Tesco 0-3 legs are fine but body is getting snug, they all fit differently so it's really difficult to know what to buy.

Em is about 10lb now but her Next up to 3 month clothes are still massive

I would buy 0-3 and send DH out for a couple of NB babygros if you give birth to an average sized baby. DS on the day of his birth was too big for one outfit we'd been given (9lb 11oz). DD was 8lb 1oz and I could get her in NB clothes for about a month (but she was TT, took a while to recover weight and also got quite sick with bronchiolitis).

Or see if you can borrow/buy 2nd hand a few NB outfits in case you are worried.

Make sure DH/DP knows where to go and what to buy. Once you have your DC, you'll know the size you need. DD turned out to be 6lbs but wasn't showing small on the scans, we had nothing that fitted as I'd taken newborn and 1mo babygros in my bag. DH had to go out and buy the tiny baby sized stuff in order to bring her home in something!

You could borrow something in newborn sized maybe, or buy a newborn sized babygro and keep the tags on, if you don't need to use it, return it.

I was thinking about maybe buying some first size much closer to the time and then returning if I don't need- but your suppose to wash baby clothes first right?

ourbabybeau sainsbury allowed me to return washed. I did it with DD1s pyjamas this year. I washed them, and only when I put them on I realised I bought the wrong size! And she is 3. I told the woman it's never been worn and only washed as i do that with all new clothes. It's possible that I had a very reasonable shop assistant.

We'd been told by people to get the 0-3 months size and not bother too much with newborn but dd was 6lb9oz and needed mothercare's tiny baby size to start with, next's first size and marks and Spencer's newborn. Had to send dh out to buy more once she arrived! She's still in the 0-3 at almost 14 weeks.

Depends on the baby and on the brand. Next come up big (compared to all the other brands we've been given or bought), so I would buy 1pack of first size vests and one pack of first size sleepsuits, then see how they are when DC is born and send someone to next if you do need first size.

Thing is theres no way of knowing how big DC will be. DS was supposed to be big based on growth scans (which fitted family history), he was 7lb2oz, just really really long but skinny. The problem we had with him was he'd out grow the length of one size, whilst the next size up would swamp his width.

What kind of clothes wise, sleep suits and vests only in sizes up to 0-3. Outfits might look cute but they are not practical and never look as comfortable as sleepsuits on a young baby. Plus lots of people will buy outfits.

Oh and on the washing front, its personal preference. I didn't wash new clothes, just second hand ones.

That's what I thought WhyOWhy. I just don't see how a tiny baby could be comfortable in say a pair of heavy denim jeans- hell, I hate wearing jeans!

Think we will buy first size and then sell on if necessary. Do babygrows sell well on eBay??

My 10 pound baby wore newborn babygrows for about 2 weeks but my 11 pound baby went into 0-3 month clothes right away. I think it depends a lot on their proportions, the 10 pound baby had shortish legs and that seems to be the bit that gets grown out of first.

DC1 didn't fit any newborn sized things, but was just over 10lbs. Straight into 0-3 month stuff.
