Current mattress advice?

Hi,

Google seems to have conflicting advice and it seems to be absent from the current NHS advice.

When DS was born in 2011 the standard advice was that to prevent SIDS it was new mattresses all the way.

Next baby is due imminently and the advice seems to have changed. We are getting the travel system steam cleaned so the mattress (loft stored) will be very clean, we have invested in a new co-sleeper and DS's cotbed mattress (when the time comes) has a washable waterproof top cover.

Is it other people's understandings that this is sufficient? Or should I be replacing the pram one/cotbed one?

I'd really rather not but it is a small price to pay for piece of mind/safety.

Thanks!

My understanding is that advice is that its always best to replace but if you really can't afford to then you should make sure the mattress doesn't sag, any covers are thoroughly cleaned and preferably use a completely waterproof cover.

Also my understanding was that its not to do with dirt on/in the mattress but to do with chemicals that get released from the mattress, with use.

I'm not comfortable taking chances so am replacing mattresses in moses basket and cotbed and I'm actually replacing the travel cot (I can get a new travel cot as cheap as a new mattress/topper for the travel cot).

Oh and when I was googling, a couple of months ago, on the subject most articles saying it wasn't necessary, were old articles and those saying you should were new articles
