Pregnancy

34 weeks- how important is folic acid?

I keep forgetting to take it- I was very good up until the last week and I've forgotten to take it 4 nights in a row.

How bad is this? Does it matter at this stage of pregnancy?

I've gone a whole week without my pregnacare or free tablets from the midwife...

You'll be fine!

Some people (and our parents) went through whole pregnancies with none of it, you've been boosting yourself with vitamins and folic for the whole stretch, 4 days won't matter.

I'm more worried about the amount of haribo I've consumed!! ;)

Do you reckon there's folic acid in cadburys dairy milk? Grin

They say it is most important in the first trimester since it is then that the baby's brain and nervous system are forming.

Lots of people stop taking it after that. Although it doesn't hurt to take it all the way through, not having taken it for a few days won't do any harm.

I noticed I have got much more slack with the supplements after the 12 week scan!

Haha plenty of calcium in a dairy milk at the least! ;) Looking at my bag of haribo it has some fibre and protein, so if you have both you're onto a winner ;)

it is more important to be taking it before you are pregnant and up to the 12th week of pregnancy than to worry about it in the last trimester

I 'm sure it'll be fine, the folic acid is really important in the first few weeks of pregnancy. If I remember correctly it helps prevent spina bifida when the embryo is developing. Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy, I actually miss it although at the time I moaned like nobodies business at the bad back, constipation and heartburn etc

there's no evidence of any benefit after first 12 weeks (but none of harm either which is why its okay to continue). But don't worry.

My GP told me to stop taking it after 12 weeks as there was not need but my MW said there is no harm in keeping taking it so I've been taking pregnacare (or Tesco's own version of this). I am rubbish at remembering to take it now that I don't have to but I don't think it's a big deal.
