Pregnancy

ice cubes and toothpaste

I'm 34 weeks and have made it this far without any crazy cravings... until the last week or so when I could happily eat a tube of toothpaste and I am eating ice cubes like they are going out of fashion!

the toothpaste has to be Colgate, and although I have resisted the urge to actually eat a tube of it, cleaning my teeth has become to highlight of my day.

So far today I have munched my way through two trays of ice cubes and I'm furious with myself cos I forgot to refill the tray earlier so there will be no more ice cubes for a while contemplating going next door and asking my neighbour if she has any...

so, anyone else with weird cravings they would like to admit to? I need inspiration while I wait patiently for my ice cubes to freeze!

You can buy 2kg bags of ice cubes from all supermarkets for £1 (75p at Heron)

I have had ice cravings with three of my four pregnancies. 3kg of ice per day was my usual.

You may be told it is a sign of anaemia (I was often told this), but I was never anaemic, just liked to crunch ice. It was the fresh and refreshed feeling that the ice gave that I liked. Maybe the toothpaste gives a similar feeling?

Iron!! For me ice cravings are always an indication of low iron. I've just finished crunching ice now and this happens when I'm not preg too.

I take an extra iron tablet with my pregnancy vitamins.

Look up Pica!

I had this with first pregnancy, iron was very low. Second time I took an iron supplement, no ice craving, so there must be something in it!

I craved ice and strong mints through all 5 pregnancies. Still wouldn't say no to a glassful now to be honest. I eat it until my teeth hurt! No iron deficiency though.

I found something on Pinterest about making 'isotonic' ice cubes... Not sure about the goodness of them but oh my word... I blitzed the juice of 2 limes, 1 lemon, a big blob of honey, a tiny pinch of salt (good for rehydrating post-sickness too!) and water and froze it into trays. Most refreshing crunchy snack ever!!

My strange craving right now is chewing sponges. And sniffing the carpet.

I came on to mention getting your iron checked but I see I have been beaten to it.

I'd heard that craving ice can be a sign of low iron... and strangely enough my midwife told me during the week that my iron was a bit low. maybe there is something in that theory!

Not edible but there was a hand sanitizer at the place I worked at the end of the last pregnancy and I was addicted to the smell of the gel. Used to restrict myself to twice a day but god it was amazing! Beginning to love chemical smells again now at 27 weeks.
