Pregnancy

Empty sac at 5 weeks and 4 days... So scared

I had yesterday an early scan as I was having sharp pains. The lady taking the exam said she could see the sack in the uterus, however she could not see the baby or a yolk sac... She only saw an empty sac. She didn't mention the measurements of the sac, she didn't say much really. She believes I may have wrong my dates but I can feel my ovulation as I feel pains... Plus I am fairly regular. I cried the whole day, I have this immense sadness inside, however I am trying to remain hopeful. My husband believes the baby will show in our second scan in two weeks... What do you think? Shall I try to prepare for the worse o try to stay positive :-/ love to all of you xxxx

Im suprised that they agreed to scan you at 5weeks 4days - thats very early. I had a severe fall down the stairs at 6weeks in a previous pregnancy and the refused a scan because it was before 7weeks.

It is possible that yolk is there and just not visable - i had a scan at 7weeks because of pains in this pregnancy. The sonographer could only see a sack, no yolk, no fetal pole. They did hormone tests to see the levels and were going to do them 2 days later to see if they went up. However i was called by the consultant that afternoon who said my hormone levels showed i should be 6ish weeks and said she wanted to do a rescan as she knew how stressful it was waiting for blood tests. I went back in and she scanned me warning she was "rougher than others but got answers". She was definately rougher (left my lady parts feeling slightly uncomfortable afterwards), but guess what, she found not just the sack but the yolk, fetal pole and heartbeat! I was 6.5ish weeks not just over 7 like i thought. So theres definately hope.

Also knowing when you ovulate doesnt mean you know your dates for sure - it can take up to a few days for egg and sperm to meet and up to another few days for implantation. I think dates can easily be a week behind because of this.

Hi sunbathingcat, thank you so much for your post. I first got a very faint positive line on the 4 august and a BFP next day on the digital test, so it's been less than 3 weeks :)

I will contact my GP on Monday to ask for blood test and check if my hormones are increasing as expected? I just don't know what else to do and the waiting is a killer. However I am indeed optimistic and the pains like cramps are still there but very mild... Maybe there is still a real chance for me to see a little bean on my next scan.

Thank you so much, love and kisses to you xxx

Please try not to worry too much. I had this, my dates were out as I have very irregular cycles. I went along expecting to be about 7 weeks, having worrying symptoms given I have suffered a miscarriage before. They found nothing but an empty sac, and asked me to return in 10 days. When I came back I saw a lovely little heartbeat, and they dated me at 7 weeks and 1 day! I am now 10 weeks and feeling pretty pregnant!

It really is very early to be able to see anything.

Hello sunbathingcat, yes this is my first pregnancy after some exams showing low egg count and few follicles. I have been so happy so far, completely blessed and anxious as I know miss arris is common at this stage. I do want to believe I might be a week less or even few days behind.

Thank you so much for posting in my thread, I feel so much better and so much more positive. Xxxx

ApplebyMennym, I'm so happy you could see the HB. I so hope to be able to see the little bean and HB. I am quite regular but I know this is a bit early and maybe a I am a bit behind. I have read that even 4 days can make the difference.

I am much calmer now and positive. I will still try to get my blood drawn early next week to have more peace of mind.

My husband said he is absolutely positive, so I will be too :)

I wish you a beautiful pregnancy and a gorgeous healthy baby xxxx

Natty - it was unbelievable. Tbh before it happened to me id have thought "yeah right". It was one hell of an emotional day, i had been convinced id lost the baby.

At first the consultant got just the sack up on the screen but then she angled the wand thingy more and pressed harder (it was bloody uncomfortable) and the yolk, fetal pole, and heartbeat came into view too. I just couldnt believe it. BTW im now 13+5 weeks with this same pregnancy.

Definately push for the hormone tests. Itll give an earlier indication of good or bad than jusy waiting a for another ultrasound.

Best wishes that you get a good result and dont give up hope yet.

Hi natty I am in a similar situation to you. I have been spot bleeding so went for a early scan yesterday. She said I was 5weeks and 4 days but just empty sac like you. It's so scary not knowing what's going to happen.. I have had 3 miscarriage in the past so I find it hard to be positive but reading on here does really help! I had my blood taken yesterday and will have it done again tomorrow morning so by Thursday I should know my position.. All you can do is hope. I know how you are feeling xxx

Hi Nottskate, I know it is hard but we need to be positive. I tried to get my blood drawn but my GP said that as this isn't an emergency I have to wait until the next available appointment, which is in 3 weeks. It made me upset but I decided to wait for my second ultrasound on the 28th August and see what happen. We are very early in this pregnancy so there is still a lot of hope. Please let me know your blood test results. I will be crossing my fingers for you.

I'm sometimes anxious but trying to keep my mind occupied and I also focus in all the good stories posted here to keep me going.

Love to you and your little bean xx

I have read bleeding is normal in pregnancy too. I am having exactly the same symptoms you mentioned and sometimes sore nipples... Not a nice pain ha!. I used to feel tired before but I'm ok now. I think my symptoms are calming down apart from the frequent urination. I also feel cramps... Scary tbh. I have cramps everyday but I believe I have a very low pain threshold. Almost forget, my skin is looking terrible very dry and lots of spots, I'm actually happy to have them as it makes me think my hormones are running high :) xxx

Hi Natty, just wanted to say that the exact thing happened to me. I went to the EPU because I was having cramps and then had a tiny bit of pink mucous and was really worried, so they scanned me and also only saw an empty sack - no fetal pole or yolk sack. I was 5wks+2 She told me to stay positive but to be honest I was crushed. I just cried and cried for two days. Did a lot of reading, which to be honest probably made me even more scared! But then went back 12 days later and thank goodness there was a heartbeat! I knew it was good news as soon as she I saw her smile when she looked at the screen. But I really remember how painful those 12 days were and I definitely prepared myself for the worst - but actually I think that did more harm than good because I couldn't eat properly and was crying so much when really I should've been keeping optimistic and looking after the potential baby. Easier said than done - but I wish I'd had a little more of my DH's positivity!
Really hoping you get the same outcome - it's very common for this to happen so don't lose hope. And keep eating/drinking as if you already have the good news! Fingers crossed for you both x

Aw RachGo1, thanks so much for sharing your experience. It gives me so much happiness to see happy endings and to know this has happened to all of you. I understand how hard it was for you, I remember crying outside the hospital, in the tube, bed and everywhere. I read a lot about this to know the possibilities, but I have somehow managed to focus on the good side. I am thinking 1. I'm happy it's not an ectopic pregnancy and then I think in all the stories posted here and feel so good, so full of positivism.

Your experiences have helped both my husband and myself so we are so grateful with all of you for sharing.

To try to focus on something else we are trying to decide what name to give to our baby... We can spend days talking about it without agreeing on anything, it's funny.

I'm sorry you has such a hard time waiting for the ultrasound, I don't blame you this is just very difficult.

How many weeks pregnant are you now?

Lots of love,
Natty

Happened to me... Sac but no heartbeat at around 5-6 weeks after I started spotting. Had an agonising 10 day wait(all the while still bleeding) scan showed baby with heartbeat! I bled on and off(more on than off!) and VERY heavily, up until about 3 weeks ago. I'm 23 weeks now. So, don't give up hope ladies!

Had bright red fresh terrible bleeding at 6+3.... Scan showed two empty sacs and I was told to expect the worst. Two weeks later one sac had disappeared but one had a little hb flickering away. 2.5 years later he is upstairs asleep horizontally across the bed. They also pushed my dates back ten days which was physically impossible but I guess pregnancy can just be weird.

As with other PP, exactly the same thing happened to me. Bleeding and cramping at 5+5 and an empty sac on the scan. Another scan 10 days later showed a foetus and heartbeat. I had really high HCG levels too so the midwife was surprised nothing showed, but it can depend on the position of your uterus - mine is tilted backwards. As others have said, 5 weeks is very early. I would say be prepared in case it could be bad news, but certainly don't give up hope.

This exact thing happened to me. I had a tiny bit of spotting and dull pain on one side. They scanned me for ectopic and found nothing but an empty sac in the right place. I was out of my mind with worry especially when they said they scan in two weeks again, I wondered how i'd get through it.

The sonographer dated me at 5+4 - I'd thought 6 weeks so I wasn't too far off and when she said there was no heartbeat she calmy said it was too early and seemed completely unconcerned. The doctor I saw afterwards explained that they don't normally like to scan for viability this early as it is too early and within the boundaries of normal not to see a heartbeat or fetal pole. They said the earliest they like to scan for this reason is 7-8 weeks

I don't know how I got through the two weeks, I was lucky my toddler occupied a lot of my energy an thoughts. Two weeks later I went back and there was a heartbeat and I was dated 7+2. I am now nearly 18 weeks and so far so good.

I should also add I had mild cramps on and off until 6 weeks and have read this is normal stretching. I even occasionally have them now and have been told by my mw it is normal
.
Keep positive and keep busy Smile

Thank you all for your support, it really helped us xxxx

Btw baby looked 7 weeks and 4 days.
