Should I pester for an NT test?

Dear all - I'd really appreciate some advice on this. I am currently 8.5 weeks pregnant with my first baby and I have already seen the midwife for my booking appointment a few days ago.

She was very nice and thorough (taking a lot of blood) and apparently I am very low risk, which is great. We talked about the various tests available and I expressed an interest in having the NT test (I figured why not, if it's available).

However when I went to reception to book my next appointment - it is not until mid September, when I will be 16 weeks.

I gather it is not unusual to have your 12 week scan so late, however having done a tiny bit of online research, they clearly won't be able to do an NT test this late in the pregnancy.

Is it really worth having the NT test, or will blood tests done at 16 weeks be sufficient to detect any abnormalities?

What are your thoughts as I am a bit clueless at all this...

Thanks,

Laura

I would give mw a ring and check but you'll probably be sent a letter from the hospital with an appointment for nt test.

Call them back and insist you want a scan to be able to do an NT test. It's shocking that women aren't being offered this- regardless on your position on what to do if you have a result that indicates high risk DS, surely it's better for EVERYONE to have that information??

My scan and NT test were organised by the hospital, not the midwives. If you haven't heard from them by ten weeks, I'd call a midwife to get them to chase it up.

Hi Op you should get a letter telling you when your 12 week scan will take place. It will be at this point the NC will be done. MW don't do the test. The 16 week appointment is your next official MW appointment and its a general appointment to see how you and baby are getting on.

Speak to your MW is you need clarity on when your scan will be booked in for.

Congratulations by the way

Also all expectant mums are offered two scans (12 and 20). So don't worry you will get a scan.

Just to reiterate what others have said. The hospital will arrange for your scan not the midwife so don't worry xx

As others have said, the 16 week appointment will be midwife check up (wee, sometimes weight and blood pressure). 12 week scan and bloods appointment will come separately.

LittleTurkish I think the OP has a letter about a different appointment not the 12 week scan.
Women are scanned at 12 weeks with bloods at the hospital.
They see their MW or consultant for a check up at 16 weeks.

All that's happened is she's got her appointment for one before the other.

Ahhh! Ok, that puts my mind at rest - thanks so much. I was confused as I see my MW at the hospital. If I haven't had a letter in a few weeks I will call the hospital to chase it up.

I really appreciate your advice! X

Sorry- my fault! All fired up as a read about a different poster who isn't getting her 12 week scan, and not reading properly.
