Kidney / UT Infection

I am stuck in bed with some kind of water infection Sad.

I went to the GP who gave me Amoxicillan which I started taking yesterday. Looking on some sites it says it can be a serious problem in pregnancy but the doctor never mentioned that... Has anyone else had a kidney infection during pregnancy? Did you just take antibiotics at home or did you have to go to hospital?

I'm pretty sure my kidneys are affected as they hurt! Sad

Hi op, I had a kidney infection during my last pregnancy and was prescribed amoxicillin just like you. I was in terrible pain so I really feel for you-but mine did clear up very quickly once I started taking the antibiotics. I drank lots and lots of water and some cranberry juice which also really helped.

Hopefully you'll start to feel better once the antibiotics kick in but if not then don't hesitate to call your doctor again xx

Have they tested your urine already? I had a suspected uti and took amoxicillin for a week then the results came in and the infection I had wouldn't be cleared by that antibiotic so im now on a different one im not happy that I took a course for no reason if you've not had the results chase them just incase

Hi, I was diagnosed with a uti last week and the hospital ob-gyn prescribed amoxicillin 500g x 3 a day, so it will be safe. The leaflet enclosed in my pack says it's also used for treating infections in pregnancy.
Hope that helps put your mind at rest.

Just realised that it's not the drugs you are worried about. When I had my urine test, they also gave me a blood test to check my kidneys. When they prescribed amoxicillin they said it was to help prevent the infection spreading to my kidneys.
It took 3 days for me to feel that the drugs had worked....maybe if you're not feeling better very quickly you should go back to dr.

Thanks all. The doctor did a dipstick test which showed there was an infection, but I don't know if he actually sent it off for lab testing. If I am no better tomorrow I'll go back on Friday morning.

I had a kidney infection in my last pregnancy, which was agony and I spent a couple of days in hospital until the pain was under control. I understand it is fairly common for cystitis to turn into a kidney infection when pregnant. No one was concerned about anything other than controlling the pain in my case and it quickly resolved. However it has made me vigilant about cystitis in this pregnancy!

Hurrah for antibiotics! I feel a lot better although I am still aware of my kidneys which is a weird feeling. I have even been sending off work emails this morning so know I must be on the mend. Think I am going to ask for regular urine tests as this frightened the life out of me. Thanks all very much for your advice. Thanks

Glad you feel better Shovetty! Smile

I am a sufferer of frequent UTIs and have had two so far in my 21 weeks of pregnancy. The ABs usually clear the symptoms within 48 hours, though you need to take the full course to make sure any lingering infection is gone. My urine has been tested at every MW appointment - they should do this anyway, but try to snag a couple of sample pots each time you go to the MW or GP (they are free, just ask if there aren't any visible) so as soon as you start to feel the warning signs of an infection coming on, you can drop a sample off at your local surgery. They only have to do the dipstick test quickly to check for nitrates in your urine, so they can usually give you the results within 24 hours and prescribe something if necessary pretty fast Smile

I as another poster had this in early preg. Really floored me. Had a day on amoxocillin the culture came back to say not sensitive (came beck in a day!) and had a different Antibiotic that floored me for another week! Just had all clear on dipstick but sending off culture just in case. I was rather worried that it was all day morning sickness.
