Brown spotting at ten weeks

Hi all,

I'm ten weeks and 2 days currently. Yesterday I had some brown discharge a few times when I wiped. Went away. However, today I have had some too, including enough to create a brown area on a panty liner on one occasion. It also seems to have subsided at least for now.

Is this common or normal and how worried should I be?

I should also mention that I had an actual red bleed and around 2 days of spotting at 8 weeks, and Also some red blood at 5 weeks. I have had 2 scans, including one a week ago which showed that all was well, so I have no idea whether I'm just prone to spotting or bleeding or whether I should do something or be worried. If it was up to me I would have a Scan after every episode of spotting or bleeding, but if this is going to happen a lot, I can't really can I? Plus I only had a scan a week ago, even though I know that things can change.

Can anyone advise? What would u do? I'm pretty worried, this is really affecting my concentration at work etc. my DH thinks I'm becoming paranoid....

I had this at 10+5 (by my dates - slightly over 11 weeks by scan dates). It lasted for over a week (although tailed off to just a wipe or two a day). I panicked but had a scan the day after it started which showed that all was fine, then my 12 week scan a week later, and all was still fine. I am coming up for 15 weeks now, and everything still seems ok (can pick up HB on doppler and feel baby wriggling).

I hope you have the same experience. The midwives at my EPU didn't seem very worried about brown spotting at all, but I was, and so asked for a scan (which they did give me the option of, but didn't seem to think was really necessary). I have spotted in other successful pregnancies too, so do think that I am just prone to it.

I'm 30 weeks and have had brown spotting at 7 weeks, 11 weeks, then on and off till 20 weeks, and then had some more at 29 weeks, and more today (31 weeks).

I was scanned at the EPU at 7 weeks, and then paid for a private scan at 11 weeks because it was a Friday and I didn't want to wait the weekend. The advice from my midwife after that was if it's like it always has been for you, don't worry. It's probably just something that happens to you. Only call if it gets worse/heavier/changes colour. I found this reassuring.

In the first 12 weeks, I would probably try for a scan, to stop you worrying, but if it keeps happening it might just need to be something annoying you try to get your head around.

Thanks for this- epu told me to keep an eye on it and let them know if it carried on in the next 24 to 48 hours. I'll see how I go overnight and then call them tomo am I think. Argghh why is this so stressful?

Great news : ) being one of those people is so very annoying, but the more you see it and the bigger and more wriggly baby gets, the less worrying it is. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

Good news! I hate being one of those people, but just have to accept that I am. With DS2 (my last pregnancy) I had late 2nd / early 3rd trimester spotting, which scared the life out of me (somehow seemed much worse than first tri spotting), but it was all still fine.
