Pregnancy

I am completely freaking out

Hello ladies

I am completely and utterly freaking out. I found out I was pregnant on Friday (I am/ was 5 weeks pregnant) and ever since then id been getting a few niggling pains but nothing I was massively worried about. Yesterday though I started getting stabbing pains on my right hand side and when I went to the toilet I had started spotting a little bit. The pain and spotting got worse throughout the day and so I called nhs direct who advised I go to my local emergency doctor which I did. He examined me and said he couldn't say whether I was miscarrying or not and basically sent me on my way. That evening when I got in I did another pregnancy test to see if it still came back positive which I did - I've now discovered that you can still get positive results for up to 7 weeks after miscarrying though! Then I thought I'll go in the shower and go to bed early. So in the shower I started bleeding dark red blood not a huge amount but started getting severe cramps. So I went to bed and thought oh well obviously wasn't meant to be. Then today I expected to wake up to a massive amount of blood and there was nothing and the cramps and stabbing pains had stopped. But later in the morning I started getting stabbing pains on my left hand side and spotting again. This evening I passed blood again but don't know how much because it was into the toilet - sorry for TMI - but the blood was very dark brown/red. No more blood since then but still continued having pains - stabbing pains and back ache. Can someone please tell me that I'm not wrong in thinking I am in the middle of miscarrying. Everyone I've spoken to has told me to calm down and it can be normal. But I've read that when pregnant you can have either pain or bleeding which is normal but not both.
I am literally freaking out ConfusedConfusedConfused

The honest answer Lacey is it could go either way. So women bleed in early pregnancy and the baby is gone, other women bleed and they miscarry unfortunately. I think if it were me I would prepare myself for the worst and hope for the best. Has your GP seen you? If so did they talk about an early scan at all?

Hello, didn't want to read and run, no real advice to offer except I believe the best/only way to tell if you are still pregnant is via an ultrasound, if you can get an appt in your local early pregnancy unit they should be able to scan you and tell you.
Hugs Thanks

You can have both. Are you in the UK? Pain + blood in the UK means they must scan you ... If your GP won't refer, go to an A&E. This is because of the rare risk of ectopic (rare so try not to worry).

I have had pain and blood and sadly it was losses.
But I also had some blood and pain this time round, it was my cervix and everything is fine.
The hospital will tell you.

Keeping fingers crossed for you.

Hi both of you

That's what I'm thinking, preparing for the worst and hoping for the best, I'm calling my gp tomorrow to see them but the emergency dr last night said that they wouldn't scan before 7 weeks.
I just think how ironic that I've gone along for the past few weeks not knowing and as soon as I know this happens Hmm

Hi - would they even scan at 5 weeks though? The emergency dr said not before 7...

It may depend where you are. They scanned me at 5 weeks in London. They'll want to rule out ectopic if you're in pain on one side so should do a vaginal scan xx good luck xx

They scanned me at 5+4 I think. Sadly the pregnsncy didn't work out but I had no cramping at all, just slow but constant bleeding.

I've had a scan at five weeks due to bleeding. It's too early to see a heartbeat but they can usually see a sac.

Look up your local early pregnancy unit rather than your GP, some you can self refer to.

I think you should call your nearest EPU (Early Pregnancy Unit) ward for advice, they may well tell you to see your GP in the morning but they're the experts not us. Does your local hospital have one? (google it) they should answer 24 hours a day. They may want to rule out eptopic.

Oh I didn't have any pain when I mc, just bleeding.

I can't even believe this is happening. I was so happy on Friday when I found out because is spent 7 years with my previous partner trying with no success and we were at the point of IVF when we separated and I never thought I'd get pregnant. It's just so ironic that as soon as I found out i started being like this and even more ironic that I told the father just before this started which was already bad enough without then possibly having to tell him that I've miscarried ConfusedConfusedConfused

Hello!! Lat week I had the exact same thing. I thought I was coming up for 8 weeks, I called the MW in the morning and she sent me straight my nearest EPU (2hrs away) they scanned me as soon as I walked in the door and we were delighted to see a health sac and perfect heart beat! She did put me back over a week, so I was only 6wks!! Please don't always think the worse! She put the pain down to muscles and tendons and the blood they are not sure but they said it's quite common!! I would phone the MW and skip the doctors!! Hope it all goes well!! ThanksXxx

Hi Gem thanks that is reassuring but I just can't help thinking the worst. I haven't even got my first MW appt until 25th June so wouldn't be able to see her. I think in the morning I'm going to forget the drs and go to A&E - my local EPC doesn't take self referrals only through GP referral or A&E and I'm hoping from what other ladies have said on here that the hospital would scan me whereas I don't think the GP would x

I know it's hard not to worry! I bleed in my 1st pg too. He is now 2 and sound asleep in bed. I don't have my 1st MW appt until the 16th of June but the MW dealt with me straight away. I'm in Scotland so maybe it's different here! Hmm I hope it's all fine. I do understand how hard it is not to think the worst! The sooner your seen the better. Ill be thinking of you. Thanks

Thanks a lot Gem. I think I've made myself worse though because against my better judgement - and I don't know why I did it - I retook another pregnancy test which was positive but the number of weeks had drooped down to what it was last week. Poss a sign that the pregnancy hormones are going? Confused

Lacey - could also be a sign that your wee was not as concentrated as it was the last time you used the test.

Hand holding, so sorry you are going through the worry

I have been cramping and getting pains in my left side but no bleeding. They should hopefully be able to tell if all is well tomorrow. have you been hospital yet hun? x

Hi ladies

Just left the hospital; they did a pregnancy test which came back positive, the checked my cervix which did have blood around it but was still closed so all good signs I thought but had my ultrasound and she couldn't see anything "I can't see any signs of a pregnancy" so I have just had blood tests and am going back in 2 hours for the results. I just don't know now I felt really positive after the first two things and now I'm doubtful again. No bleeding today as of yet - apart from the old blood the dr found on my cervix - but still getting some cramping pains x

Try to keep calm hun, have you had bloods taken before today? aslong as your hcg levels are increasing you should hopefully be ok. They couldn't see anything on my scan too so I am just hoping its too early. They guy who did my scan said you can't see anything on the scan if your hcg levels are below 1000 or sometimes even higher. keep positive hun xx
