my friend had this happen at her 20 week scan - is this normal?

She has just told me that to check her cervix, the sonographer went up her bumhole for a look. Is this normal?! She said he didn't really explain anything just did it. She had her partner in the room with her.

I am dying of curiosity wondering if this is normal or not and if so, why has this not happened to me, anyone I know, or in anything I've read?!? I don't want to press her for any more details...

That can't be right??

No way.

I've never had a sonographer check my cervix. They aren't midwives.

She's smart and well-educated as well, but it's her first baby and I guess she was too nervous to question anything and just assumed he was doing his job...

They can sometimes do an internal scan. If they can't find what they need in the normal way.
It's rare I think and would be vaginal.
Is she quite sure?

What the fuck??!

Is she absolutely sure? Sorry I'm sure she is, I'm just Confused Shock

Did she have the internal scan?

Bewildered by this one!

If they can't see what they need here they ask you back in a few days. Never heard of a TV scan that far on.

Report
AllThatGlistens · 06/06/2014 15:01

And yes, the internal scan is a probe inserted into the vagina. Nothing should have gone into her anus!

Report
MikeLitoris · 06/06/2014 15:02

If she is serious she needs to get clarification on what exactly was done and why. It will be in the scan notes.

How is even possible to see the cervix up there?

Argh posted too soon, sorry.

I've had 3 internal scans over my pregnancies well as countless normal ones and none went near my bum! Completely bizarre.

Are you sure it wasn't up birth canal? Internal ultrasounds are fairly common, although less so in later pregnancy. Could she have been mistaken? Or did he badly misaim? Confused

She's a Cambridge grad, I doubt she would have gotten her anus and vagina mixed up Grin

She didn't say anything about a transvaginal scan, I didn't think they'd do them this late anyway? Just get you to walk around for 10 mins and then try again if they can't see what they need?

For the life of me I can't think of a single scenario where they'd have to go in the back door...

I may send her this thread...

I had a vaginal scan at 20 weeks to check blood flow it is normal part of anomaly scan at my hospital though you can say no. Definitely not the other end.

eurochick · 06/06/2014 15:04

Mike cervical scans are done if there is a reason to suspect the cervix might be short. Sonographers carry out these scans all the time.

I had a TV scan yesterday at 20 weeks. I had LLETZ treatment to remove pre-cancerous cells 2 years ago and they had to check my cervix was holding up to its job.

So yes it can be normal depending on the circumstance but it would have been a TV not anal.

Quite normal up the front door, not the back, EVER. Just asked my friend - female obstetrician - she just rolled her eyes. Did this really happen?

Report
AveryJessup · 06/06/2014 15:08

Nope, definitely not normal! Can't see any justification for that. As Euro says, an internal vaginal scan to check cervix might be required at 20 weeks but it's rare and would require him explaining what he was doing to the patient, more than just 'I need to check the cervix'.

Sounds very suspect, I would call the clinic and ask for details on what happened.

OK, I'm going to call her tonight and have a chat with her.... then maybe send her this thread. I did say to her that that didn't sound normal and I'd be calling my midwife straight away to talk to her about it...
