Hot curry - does it work?

I've just been for a lush dinner with dh, making the most of a meal with peace and quiet and had one of the hottest curries I think I've ever had. anyway, just wondering if anyone else has eaten one and it has started their contractions off?

YES!

I had a madras and instantly went into labour in my local indian.

I'll be trying it again this time!

But nothing but syntocin worked for me.

Nope, the sweep did it. But I did order a curry to have during labour. Fingers crossed for you!

During my last pregnancy a midwife told me that the thinking behind eating hot curry to start labour is that it can stimulate the bowel (make you poo) your bowel surrounds your uterus so by stimulating the bowel you can sometimes stimulate the uterus ie start contractions. This also goes for pretty much anything you eat to supposedly start labour pineapple etc.

It was the only thing I didn't try to get labour going I knew the chances were I was going to poo during labour which was bad enough, chicken madras poo? I don't bloody think so! ;)

I'm booked for a sweep tomorrow!

perch, what's that?

Ithoughtofitfirst do you reckon that's just by chance?

i'm worried that now I've eaten a blinding hot curry, if I got into labour I'll majorly s**t myself and it'll be like passing battery acid aha

Sorry don't be scared! I'm sure it will be all out of your system! If you can face it go home and dtd after your sweep that's supposed to really work I could never face it though! Syntocin is what is in the drip when the induce you my god that gets you going, shame you can't buy it at Boots :)

I ate curry (which I like very hot), and had sex, regularly throughout pregnancy. So it was VERY ANNOYING when people told me to do this at 40+3 as if it would magically start labour…

My labour started after a rare steak and a glass of grumpy wine Grin

It was definitely chance. A delicious chance.

I was 40+11

I'm still trying it this time though lol

I tried very hard with both pregnancies to kick-start labour with curry, went to the local curry house a week overdue with both but no such luck. I was really hoping for a free meal too Grin

The sweep did it for me both times actually. Went into labour 9 hours after the first and 23 hours after the second.

If the sweep is easy and painless you're probably well on your way as its likely to mean you're already effacing and starting to dilate. If its painful and difficult you probably still have a way to go. Thats what my midwife said anyway. Both sweeps I was about 3cm dilated without any effort on my part.

How many weeks are you?

I've had my second sweep today. In pain but not contractions. I'm only 39+1 so still plenty of time for it all to happen.

Didn't work for me.
Neither did sex.

The storm worked though! But that doesn't look likely to help you, sorry!

penguin i'm 41+1 and will be +2 tomorrow when I have it done. how long does it normally take? what actually happens as well? is it they whack you open with a speculum and have a rub around?

Yeah we've did, didn't help. I've tried keeping active at home (walking is a killer with pgp) and bouncing on my gym ball too.

Nope, didn't work for me. Went out for a spicy Thai dinner on my due date but still went 10 days overdue in the end... and I think I had something very boring like roast chicken for dinner on the Sunday I went into labour!

Nah they stick a finger in and 'sweep' it 360° round your cervix to loosen the edges. As you get closer to labour everything inside softens and the cervix becomes easier to reach as it starts to efface. No speculums, no frightening implements. Should take seconds.

Well looks like it may have worked for me, only to the point of my waters going but it's started! Grin

Hurrah! How exciting. Hope you have a baby with you by the end of the day!

I think it also depends on what you're used to (or Indian and Mexican women would NEVER go overdue!) - I've been raised on South Indian food to some extent so my idea of 'hot curry' (and indeed what my bowels are used to) might be different to others.
