Low lying placenta

Hi ladies when I had my 20 week scan they told my my placenta was low. Next week I'll be 36 weeks and I've got my follow up scan.

Can any one shed some light on this because every one seems to think it will move up. Even I feel confident it will.

I had no bleeding so does that mean it all should be fine.

If it hasn't moved up what happens ?

I've just had my 20 weeks scan and was told the same. I'm being scanned again at 32 weeks.
Watching for advice...

There's not a lot of info on it. I'm assuming it will be all go because if I mention it to midwife she says aww it's probably moved up :S

I had the same thing & at my 34 week scan it had moved. If it hadn't of moved then I would have had more scans until the due date & they may have decided to perform a c Section, but I think I remember that the odds are VERY slight that it won't have moved.

if it hasnt moved up they will most likely book you in for a section. It's too dangerous to give birth vaginally with a LLP, depending on how low it actually is.

I've had 2 friends that had this at 20 weeks- one moved up, the other didnt. The second girl is booked in for her section today as it happens!
i seem to remember them both saying that a v high % of them move back up into position though- 9/10. So the odds are in your favour.

If it doesnt move back up, then do what the medics advise. It depends on how 'low' it is- if it's covering the cervix, then it's a no brainer- it has to be a section- if it's not that low, they will make a judgement call on it-depending on how risky the bleed during pregnancy could be, and potential harm to the baby. Best of luck to you both!

They decided mine was low lying at my 18wk scan. I get scanned every 2 wks. By 24wks it was well up out of the way. I was told that the bottom of your uterus is the part that grows the most in the 2nd half of pregnancy and around 90% of low lying aren't by the time you're due. If it hasn't moved up enough then they may want to do a csection. I'm sure everything will be fine, good luck for the scan

yep she did Newmummy, a LOT of bleeding from 8 until about 20, much less frequent since actually. But still about twice a month or so? she's had a pretty tough time of it. Truth be told she's somewhat relieved to be getting sectioned today, it'll be nice and straight forward (hopefully)

Well I hope your friends section is nice and easy for her and she gets to meet her baby how exciting.

I think mine will of moved up because I have had no bleeding what so ever. Maybe I haven't had much info on LLP due to the fact they are confident it will have moved up

Thanks for advice

She must have heard me talking about her.. just got 'the' text.. baby Rhys Michael delivered at 9.23am.. 9 lbs 6 oz- at 39 weeks- dear god he's a big baby- just as well she didnt go 'over' and have to deliver vaginally, he definitely would have weighed in over 10 lbs!! Clearly the regularly bleeding and drama did him no harm whatsoever!!!!!!! Her OH is a rugby player so obviously ''big'' genes..

Section booked in at 9am, baby delivered at 9.23am.. i'm so pleased for her, she's had a tough road including 2 MCs prior to this conception!

I had bleeding at 7 and 10 weeks and when I had my 12 week scan I was told my placenta was low lying. When I was 14 weeks I had a huge bleed, fresh red blood but no cause could be found and I think they assumed it was placenta related. At my 20 week scan I was told the placenta was still lying very close to my cervix.

I was having regular growth scans anyway and by the time I got to week 28 my placenta was well out the way so had obviously moved up in its own time.

Good luck with your follow-up scan, I'm sure it will be fine Smile

90% of them move, if they're not actually covering the os at the earlier scan.
I had one and it was about a mile away from the cervix when they rescanned me. If you've had no bleeding in all this time very unlikely to be a problem I think.
