Second hand smoke

Now we all know second hand smoke is awful but I have a dilemma in that I have plans with a friend who's a heavy smoker this weekend and I'm 8 weeks pregnant. I haven't told her so I can't exactly ask her not to smoke. I'll probably just have to cancel but I'd feel rubbish as I haven't seen her in months! I know she'd understand when she eventually finds out but just wondered if anyone had tried excuses to ask friends to stop smoking without giving the game away?

Can you meet somewhere like restaurant/cafe/pub where smoking isn't allowed? or invite them to yours and politely ask them to smoke outside?

We're meeting at hers and she's already invited someone else who also smokes! I've already explained I have the car so that's why I can't drink but I can't help but think my only option is to cancel! We've had it planned for months and I feel like a rubbish friend, but baby comes first!

Say you've had a recent chest infection and have to be careful?

Throat infection. A lot of it about. Dr said keep away from smoke. ;)

She can smoke in another room to you surely. I banish DH to the grim spare room for his dirty habit.

I wouldn't let anyone smoke in my car if I was a non-smoker.

Could you ask to rearrange to yours as otherwise you can't make it? Depends what you value more seeing her and the potential awkwardness of asking her not to smoke or not seeing her? I'm sure she will understand without a reason if she's a friend? Did you used to smoke before pregnant? If so then that's a good excuse!

No I haven't smoked for years, she knows I'm used to being around smoke though so she'd know something was up! I've decided to just cancel anyway as I have an awful cold today so doubt I'll even be up to socialising tomorrow anyway! Although I suppose if I am feeling much better I can always say to her that I can't be around smoke due to my cough at least that's genuine so she can't argue with it wink
