Old Wives Gender Predictions

What are some of your favourite old wives tales?
Have any been accurate with predicting the sex of your babies?

I'm currently 15 weeks and according to the "nub theory" we are expecting a girl but there is of course a lot of uncertainty yet.

Just a bit of fun and a chance to share experiences Grin

I was told by an old midwife when they listen to the babies heart beat on a dollar if it sounds like a train its a boy if it sounds like a galloping horse its a girl. This was definately true for mine....I think though boys tend to have slower heart rates than girls so maybe the difference in heart rate accounts for the different sound maybe...(the heart beat thing is not an old wives tale that's research proven lol)

If you look at a scan picture apparently you can tell what baby is by looking at the "nub" or bump where the genitalia are developing.

if it looks close to babys bottom, its a girl.
If its more to the front then it predictas a boy.

There are a few good examples on Google images that explain it well and point out what to look for Smile

The heartbeat galloping horses was wrong for me... Three seperate midwives told me I was having a boy and as I sit here cuddling my 12 week old daughter, I can definitely dispute that one ;-)

The nub theory was right for us though xx

The one with cravings didn't work with me. It's supposed to be if you crave sweet things its a girl and savoury if its a boy. I was addicted to toffee crisp clusters with ds1 and haven't been able to look at them since.

How you carry them was pretty accurate for me. My bump with both boys was quite low and high with my girls until the last few weeks when my bump dropped as they engaged.

Most people I've spoke to are adamant I'm having a girl as I'm carrying all at the front apparently. However I am convinced I'm having a boy. Due on Thursday so we will find out soon enough!

Ooh I love the guessing game! That's probably why at 29wks I'm still guessing!

For fun I did a list of the old wives tales and tallied up my results. Turns out we have a 50/50 chance of having a boy/girl Shock who'd have thought Wink

I've heard that the mother's intuition is right 70% of the time!

Two midwives listened to baby's heartbeat at sixteen weeks with doppler and said sounds very much like a boy...just found out I'm having a darling girl Grin

My acne has been awful and hair has been so dry, I haven't had a hint of blooming. They do say girls steal your beauty!

Nub theory suggested girl, had sweet cravings and carried all front and high... I had a wee girl. Old wives theories proved true for me :)

I have 14 nephews and nieces and this is my first and in my family with every singly girl you get bad morning sickness but you get barely any if not none at all with boys

Heart beat is meant to be quicker for girl than boy. I suspect that's because in general girls are smaller than boys.

My DS had a much quicker heartbeat than my DD (he was also smaller than she was).

Ha. At 14 weeks Sonographer told me she wad sure it was a boy. 20 week Sonographer this week was quite cross she'd done that as she is certain it's a girl! 14 weeks I was shown what she thought was clearly a penis, turns out it was a clitorous! So there goes nub theory. And we have a friend who was told boy at 12 weeks, girl at 16 weeks and then boy at 20 weeks! And they'd paid for a gender scan and everything! I've been much sicker and hungrier this time than with DD and I'm carrying low but nope its a girl!

According to the stories I should be having a girl - very high bump, terrible sickness, non stop sweet cravings (mainly ice cream) and my 'motherly intuition' keeps saying girl. Gender scan at 20 weeks said it was a boy though!

My intuition has a 100% failure rate so far anyway Grin. I was totally wrong in my first pregnancy and I'm wrong about everyone else's so I figure my strong feeling that the scan was wrong and I'm actually having a girl probably confirms it's definitely another boy!

2 midwives listening to the heart beat and my mother's intuition told me that my first would be a girl. I also had cravings for sweet things. He is definitely a boy.

This pregnancy is very similar, including the way I am carrying. I guess it could go either way!

I was always told that a high bump is a girl and low bump is a boy, I know it changes a lot but I have been right quite a few times lol

I have had much more sweet cravings with a boy than with my dd. this time have craved so much chocolate and cakes. Last time was anchiovies and smoked salmon. So don't agree with that one!
