Did you put on weight in the first trimester?

Bit aghast to discover I've put on about 5lbs in the first trimester. I was pretty slim before and it's mainly due to eating lots of healthy food to try and get a balanced diet. But still! At this rate am I going to end up huge with loads to lose after the birth, or is it quite normal?

It does vary for people. I weighed myself this morning (I'm 7 weeks) and I'm basically the same as I was when I found out I was pregnant (at 3 and a half weeks), and I actually weigh less than I did before Christmas (I think morning sickness is the reason for this as there have been plenty of times just the thought of food has made me feel sick). I'm surprised as my trousers and jeans definitely don't do up anymore as my stomach has expanded hugely!!

I've been told that a lot of people who put on weight early then don't put so much on later, and vice-versa a lot of people who don't put on much weight at first find it goes on pretty quickly later, as people just naturally vary in when the weight goes on.

According to my pregnancy book most people put on 2-4 pounds in the first trimester, so 5 pounds seems reasonable to me. If you're worried about weight gain maybe just try to exercise a bit more. Do some swimming or walking etc? Now's not the time to worry about weight gain or try to cut back your food intake, though it is worth bearing in mind that on average most pregnant women only need a couple of hundred extra calories a day, (maybe 3-400 in 3rd trimester), so the actual amount you should be eating shouldn't be hugely different to what you were eating before being pregnant (maybe just an healthy snack or two a day).

Hope that helps. Wishing you a happy and healthy pregnancy. Smile

I had put on 8lbs at my 12 week scan!!! Shock

I had the type of nausea that required constant eating to keep it at bay and I was so exhausted that exercise was not happening.

hoping that this gain slows down as I'm now feeing better, but that was not a pleasant surprise at all.

Girls, i put on a STONE in the first trimester. Was horrified. Now, i got pregnant on honeymoon (all inclusive, 6 meals a day + cocktails!!!) and was very skinny (wedding weight) and needed to gain a few.. even outside of pregnancy i'd've gained at least 7 lbs on the honeymoon anyway the way we were eating!! I also had ZERO nausea also.. more's the pity.

I'm 20 weeks now and have actually gained very little between 12-20.. my appetite in the first trimester was out of control, it has completely stabilised now. I'm trying to cap teh weight gain about about 2 stone in total if i can. It'll be all baby weight from now on. My SIS and SIL both said they gained hte most during first trimester also, which is some comfort.. it's almost like you eat like a crazy person during the adjustment phase of 6-12, but i've found since 12 that i'm eating more normally again thank god.

I think its normal to gain up to around 5lbs though

Yes, I did, both pregnancies, probably about a stone... My apetite during the first trimester was uncontrollable, and eating was the only thing helping me with the nausea. Then apetite stabilised during second trimester (still having a second breakfast though). I am currently 35w and completely not interested in eating, only fruit&veg seems interesting... All this stuff is really personal, so I laugh at the books that tell me that I shouldn't have put anything during the first three months, but would gain a lot during the last weeks - that's utter nonsense, and it only depends on your body.

There is no need to even think about it, best if you pack the scales away and only measure the damage at the end. Pregnancy is difficult enough, worrying about weight is pointless IMO. Obvs, we all try to eat healthy and walk a lot, but if wine gums are the only thing that makes me survive a day in the office, I am going to have them!

I'm the same but my nausea is mild and often manifests as by body saying "full now feeling a bit sick!" after half my dinner. Other times I feel sick and need something like biscuits to slake it. So it evens out I guess.

I ate loads in the first 14 weeks as it stopped me feeling nauseous. I am 30 weeks now and feel like the gain has slowed down. Try to eat a lor but walk lots each day, I'm sure that has stopped me gaining more - been doing an hour a day In the week but am now on bed rest!

I also ate loads in the first 14 weeks as it stopped me feeling nauseous. I am 30 weeks now and feel like the gain has slowed down and am less tired and wanting more fruit. Try to eat a lots if you need the energy but walk lots each day, I'm sure that has stopped me gaining more - been doing an hour a day in the week but am now on bed rest!

Yes, I put some on.

And, 5lbs in 12 weeks is nothing...

5 lbs in 12 weeks is a very small weight gain. I actually lost 9 lbs because of HG

Dunno how much weight I put on, but I was certainly at my most bloated during the first trimester.

All white toast and no pooing makes Saucy a fat girl.

I'm at my most shapely now, strangely (36 weeks)

5lb?! Pah! I had managed nearly 2 stone by 12 weeks!

Going from mrs skinny no carbs to full on, constantly grazing, nausea avoiding carb-monster took its toll.

But now at 31 weeks I have very little appetite and things have evened out a bit... Phew!

No, when I was weighed at my 12 week appointment I'd actually lost weight since the last time I'd weighed myself. Which was before I got pregnant.

No, I have lost 10kg. No interest in food at all.

I'm 10 weeks and have maintained my pre-pregnancy weight so far. I dont know how as Ive been eating like a horse (it was the only way I could keep my nausea at bay) and my tummy is definitely larger - but I wouldnt be worried about a few pounds - Im sure it'll settle down.

I lost half a stone in the first trimester last time - morning sickness and not feeling like I wanted to eat. This time round, I've realised that even if I don't want to eat, it helps stave off the sickness so I've been eating lots and have stayed the same weight as I was before I was pregnant.

BUT - last time I put loads of weight on after the first trimester so it all evened out in the end! I wouldn't worry about it, especially if you've been eating healthy food - it'll be good weight! Unlike me - I've been eating crisps, chocolate, pasta...am now trying to eat healthily for the rest of the pregnancy but unfortunately still feeling sick...

yeah, I've put on at least a stone I reckon. Partly due to christmas gluttony and carbs to avoid nausea/hunger. I do find if I'm not eating every two hours I feel incredibly unwell. I'm 14 weeks tomorrow.
Really hope it slows down in third tri!!

I lost about 6lbs during the first trimester. Bad sickness but not HG, and just very little interest in food. The only food I did want to eat was red apples, strawberries and grapes, and I went off chocolate completely.

My weight hadn't changed at all by the time I had my 12 week appointment - however, I'd had really bad sickness and hadn't eaten properly for weeks.

I'm now 32 weeks and have put on 11.5 kg which is about 25lbs.

Yes, I put on lot of weight in the first trimester all three times. Not that much in the second though.

5 lb is nothing, mine was more like a stone each time.

ChicaMomma · 31/01/2014 15:56

Penguins, how much did you put on in total?
I too put on a stone in the first tri but it seems to have stablisied somewhat since, well, completely actually, very little gained from 12-20. So i'm wondering can i manage to cap it at 2 stone overall.. well, 2.5 anyway, or let's say 30 lbs.

Erm, I don't know. I deliberately didn't weigh myself at all. I just felt it didn't help.

I do know that, when I weighed myself a few weeks after the birth (so having lost baby, waters, placenta, blood volume, but still with enormous boobs!) I had about a stone to lose.

RaRa1988 · 31/01/2014 16:28

I didn't put anything on at all until about 16 weeks, but between then and now (21 weeks), I seem to have managed to gain 7 pounds Hmm. Not overjoyed about that, but midwife says it's fine. I guess we're all different - I'm hoping my weight gain will slow down a little now!

Report
YoniMitchel · 31/01/2014 16:36

I gained a stone both times and then only another stone over rest of the pregnancy, my mother was the same !!
