Weight gain at 20 weeks?

Rockchick1984 · 09/10/2013 12:13

Just wondering how much weight people had gained by 20 weeks? I put on a lot of weight when I had DS so trying to keep on top of it this time, but all the calculators online seem to tell me different versions of "normal"!

Was average weight to start with, and didn't lose anything with morning sickness.

i was told about 1 pound per week in 2nd and 3rd trimesters, so by 20 weeks should have gained about 7 pounds. i managed this with my first but i'm too scared to weigh myself now i'm about 20 weeks with dc2 and feeling quiet curvaceous!

I had the shock of my life this morning when I got on the scales! I am 30 weeks now, and have put on 24lbs since the beginning.

I am about 6lbs over the recommended weight gain, but I keep telling myself its my treat to myself for carrying a baby :)

I think it's quite hard to stick to exactly what they say.. I was ill at the beginning and could only really eat starchy foods without feeling sick, then I was much better, and now I want to eat constantly or I feel sick.

I think you just have to go with the flow of your body. Obviously wouldn't recommend tucking into a take away every night but as long as you are eating reasonably balanced meals I wouldn't beat yourself up too much.

I’m 21+4 and have gained about 2.2 kilos (so just under 5lb I guess) and still have a very small bump, that's only really noticeable after a big meal! But I’m not too worried as baby looked fine on the scans and my mum had a very small bump through all 3 of her pregnancies. I'm sure I'll balloon in the last trimester though!

I'm now 24 weeks and am 5kg's (about 11 pounds ish) more than i was pre-pregnancy. This is my second pregnancy and i was carrying a bit of weight still from last time. I'm trying not to worry about it and have another 10kg's to go to get to the same weight i was at the end of my first pregnancy. I'm using the weights i was through last pregnancy as a guide for me.

Hi Op I am 28 weeks and I have put on about 9/10lbs. I can't remember what I had put on by 20 weeks.

Oh I was about 17 lb up at this point, I wouldn't worry too much as long as you are eating good stuff there is lots of conflicting advice, everyone is different...

Thanks all, I've gained about 10lbs so far so seems like its a bit much, but only a little bit!

Hmmm, just shuffled off to the scales to weigh myself (I tried on some maternity clothes in a shop yesterday and felt - and, I fear, looked - like an elephant) and I seem to have put on a whopping 13lbs since my booking-in weight at 7 weeks. I'll be 19 weeks tomorrow. Slightly concerned now! At nearly 5ft10, size 10 and BMI 20 at booking in, this all feels quite alarming - just checked and most of the weight gain is supposed to come after 20 weeks??

Everybody and every pregnancy is different. As long as your eating properly I would not bother using scales.

Last pregnancy I put on 1.5stobe in each trimester. I lost 2stone day I gave birth and 1.5 stone over next 2 weeks. Back 2 pre pregnancy weight by 4 months and 1 stone less by 7 months. So you really have no clue how much is fluid etc that will go when you give birth.

Currently 11 weeks and put on 3lbs compared to over a stone last time but no clue why its so different!

buttercupski, that's really not that much - as long as the dr wasn't concerned, don't worry so much. If you were a size 10 to start with, you didn't look like an elephant. Really, focus on the baby you're going to have soon, be kind to yourself. It's hard, one of the things about pregnancy is that you don't have perfect control over how you look, your body is doing what you need it to.

Good point McBaby - technically, I put on 35 lbs during pregnancy, but had so much fluid that I was 2 stone lighter when I came home, which according to some books is not usual. Also lost the rest by 3-4 months without dieting. I remember being so worried about it but really, with hindsight, keeping the off the sweet treats when tired was much harder!

I never lost the last 1.5st after having DS (he's 2.5) so I know that for me its not just a case of the weight dropping off after the birth. That's why I'm concerned about not gaining too much this time, hopefully after this baby arrives I can try to get back to pre-children weight. My BMI was about 21 before him, it was about 24.5 before I fell pregnant this time Blush

I was about 16 pounds at 20 weeks. Put on 28 pounds in total. For my pregnancies I always put on the least weight in my third tri.

I'm 22+5 and am now 20lbs heavier than my booking in app. It's def more than the recommended, but I had Dd 15 months ago and had out on around 4st while pregnant with her and lost it all within 6 months. I think it's just individual, I seem to gain a lot but lose it easily.
I don't think 10lbs is too much though, seems tiny compared to me! Grin

McBaby, thank you - that's reassuring! I might steer clear of the scales from now on...

Choos123, thank you also and wow, yes, your 'lack of control over how you look' point is a really good one. I was a keen runner before conceiving and always relied on that to keep the weight off while I ate whatever I wanted. But I didn't run at all in first trimester as too tired/breathless and now feel too flabby to try so a big element of control/self-esteem has gone. Still, off to first pregnancy yoga class this morning so hope that helps!

IComeFromALandDownUnder, interesting (and also reassuring) that you put on least weight in third tri - really shows that all women, all guidance different etc etc

No idea, I've decided I will worry about my weight once baby is here.

That's what I did last time Knickers - 5st later I regretted it!

I think as long as you do not go overboard with eating then you should be fine.

Hmmm, I'm 18 W today & I've put on 9-10lb & feel enormous. Baby no 4, and DD3 is 18MO. I'm 5ft 2 & I was 7st 10lbs before I conceived. I think I feel worse cos I KNOW I'm being too generous to myself & 'need' lots of stodgy cheesy/buttery toasties, chocolate & crisps. TBH I think I probably under eat the rest of the time-I don't go hungry, & eat what I want but eat ONLY if I'm hungry & don't care if I miss meals/get my 5 a day. When I'm pregnant a little voice inside my head tells me I need to eat for baby & be better nourished, so I feel as though I'm overeating. I have always ended up 7st 10lbs again after baby gets to 9/10mths so I know it will come off, but I HATE feeling my clothes get tight & seeing the bulges appear all over. Don't think I'd mind so much if it was just bump...it goes on EVERYWHERE!!!!!

I'm 27 weeks and have put on 14 pounds/approx 6 kilos which I think is a stone.
My first baby so I really wasn't sure what to expect!

Lots of people comment that I "should be eating for two"...I know they're only half joking- I think that would be the route to piling on the pounds & possibly struggling to lose it all after.

I'm eating pretty normally at the moment i.e. Much like my non-PG state. Definitely was ravenous in the first trimester where I ate everything- but didn't even discover I was pregnant until well into 2nd trimester! Shock
