Pregnancy

Bump size 25 weeks

Am feeling down as people keep making negative comments about my bump size- saying that I look about 8 months pregnant/must actually be having twins (hmm yes maybe you're right and they missed that at the FIVE scans I've had so far!)

I don't know many people who have been pregnant so have no idea what is 'normal.'

I have been checking my weight once a week and I'm only putting on 0.5kg per week (sometimes less, more only a couple of times).

I was a size 10-12 before and haven't put on weight anywhere else but in front- not even that much on my boobs tbh, just on the bump!

Have my mw appt this week so thought about asking her to measure me.

Is it true that your weight gain can slow down a bit in 3rd trimester even though baby's weight gain is obviously increasing rapidly?

I was told to expect the most weight gain in weeks 20 - 28. Your getting close to the time that they start measuring you and you'll prob find that your about right - I think most people just like something to say a lot of the time. Don't take it to heart, if its any prob your MW will tell you, 4cm either way is normal though. Remeber if your short your bump will stick out more because your body is shorter.

Smerlin, I'm 25 weeks too Smile Truly, everyone's bumps grow at different rates. Just look on google images for "25 week bump" to see. You may have had a growth spurt and find you grow less later on.
Your mw will probably measure you this week anyway, but basically don't worry. People just like to make unhelpful comments!

People keep saying this to me. I was massive with my last pregnancy and even bigger this time. But last time I breastfeed and shed weight like I was on hunger strike (despite living off pizza, pasta and cake) so I'm just smiling serenely (or to close friends and relatives a sharp"fuck off") and thinking of the bonny baby I'm building and gold top milk ill be making post birth. The only personal opinion you should worry about is the doctor/midwife.

I'm 26 weeks and my midwife said she would start measuring my bump from the next appointment at 28 weeks.

Don't worry about size. Some women hold LOTS of water/amniotic fluid. Smaller frames may look out f proportion as a bump grows.

People don't mean to be so rude - they're just making conversation!

Technically my 25 weeks starts tomorrow but only two hours away now workingtitle Wink

Googling was a good idea- such a massive variation!

I'm hoping to breastfeed and lose it all too- better had otherwise I will look like some bizarre upside down camel with all the weight in front!

I keep being told I'm small but feel massive, don't worry we've all got different body shapes so no two pregnancies can ever really look the same - people just like to find something to say!

I look huge too and I'm 26 weeks. People always say it to me too I think it's because I'm only 5'2. I get the oh my god i looked like that when i was over due! My midwife always measures me and I'm spot on. So please don't worry. This happened in my first pregnancy too and it bothered me. Now when people say it, I say great thanks! That's what I needed to hear, then a smile so they feel bad. Or I just say. Your not supposed to say that you know, your just supposed to say oh what a lovely bump. At this they always apologise and they'll probably never say it to another pregnant woman again. So you've educated. Just enjoy. X

You are not alone. I had a complete meltdown today about how absolutely massive I am already (26+2). I've had all the comments (is it twins/you must be nearly ready to pop/you have HOW LONG to go?!) because my bump is so big already. Everyone is different, carries different amounts of fluid etc. I really wouldnt panic unless your midwife tells you there is something to worry about.

Hi I asked to see my MW today as I hadn't been weighed or measured yet but everyone else I know of on here had. (I'm 25+4)

She said that they don't start measuring until 24 weeks and my last appt was at 23+3 hence no measurement yet. I am measuring at 24 weeks which is apparently absolutely fine. I was worried because I've had surgery recently and thought it might've had lasting effects but MW is perfectly happy with bump.

They also said they are not allowed to weigh women during pregnancy until the 3rd trimester (apart from at booking in for initial weight) because it is "unfair" and "causes undue pressure on pregnant women"

So I don't know how much I've put on and need to weigh myself at home tomorrow!

I have had mixed responses at work - most people don't think I look pregnant at all, although I feel like a beaches whale! And then last week someone asked if I was certain I'd got my dates right - again I have had 5 scans too - so yes, I'm sure I'm six months not eight!! It just makes you feel so self conscious sometimes, doesn't it?

You are not alone. Smile Flowers

Honestly some people just say stuff to make conversation. While on maternity leave myself, other colleagues wrre saying "she is massive!!" about a workmate who was 28wks pg - when we met up for a cuppa she had the neatest bump I ever seen - literally all bump nothing elsewhere. I expected her to be round based on what everyone was saying!

Some people just dont have a realistic view of a heavily pregnant woman.

I'm exactly the same, 24 weeks and huge bump. I'm 5'3", started off a size 16, now wearing size 14 maternity clothes. I put on 10lb in the first 15 weeks despite the nausea, and am now neither gaining nor losing. All within the healthy gain charts, and I think I'm actually losing a bit while baby gains a bit now.

However, this doesn't stop the comments... my dentist told me at 22 weeks that I am bigger than she was when she gave birth (then said her baby was only 2lb!). And my SIL at the weekend said "another 16 weeks to go? You're going to be massive!" In fairness, I went to my first antenatal class yesterday and the only people bigger than me were due in 5 weeks, all the aug/sept ladies had tiny bumps.

Repeat after me... "I am growing a healthy happy baby, and I trust my body to know what its doing" :)

I'm guilty of doing this last weekend. I met up with a friend who is 28 weeks pregnant. I'm 37 weeks and my first comment to her was 'OMG you're nearly as big as me!' Probably not what she wanted to hear and I'm not sure why on earth I said it . . . I think it was part jealousy as I've always had quite late developing bumps.

Second what a PP said - google 25 week bumps and you will see all sorts .

I'm only 19 weeks (today!) with twins. I started at 127lbs, I'm now 137lb. It's different for everyone but you do gain less in your 3rd trimester - from my experience anyway.

RuckAndRoll · 09/07/2013 10:47

I had my first antenatal class the other week (currently 35wks), the first thing the mw got us to do was put ourselves in the order we thought by bump size, then by actual due date. She did it to prove there is no such thing as a normal bump.

Yes, they'll be watching if you're signifcantly under/over but everyone really is different.

Hi,

I hope this is reassuring. I am preg with first baby and everyone has commented that I look really big, are you sure its not twins, its going to be a really big baby etc.

I am 5'5" and was size 12 and 69kg (11st) before getting pregnant. At my 22 week scan they estimated baby was 1lb, bang on the right size, at my 24 week midwife appt my tummy measured 24cm also right in the right range for that stage. i now weigh about 78kg (12 st 4lb)

So I would take comments with a pinch of salt, unless it is your doctor or midwife, in which case they should also be able to offer advice on maintaining healthy weight gain.

Smerlin · 10/07/2013 22:16

Well I was measured today and was 27cm which is apparently within the normal range for just over 25 weeks so feeling a bit better. I do feel like I've had a big growth spurt in the last week or so so I imagine there won't be masses of growth before my next appt in 3 weeks.

Love your mantra 42andcounting Smile

I've been asked this a lot as I got big early and I'm just starting to look about right at 27 weeks I think, I'll find out next week at mw appt. the number of people who have said "are you sure there's only one in there?" Is ridiculous and it does get old but people just like to have something to say. Everyone's normal is totally different so just try and let it go over your head, smile and say no definitely just one! x

First thing this morning my neighbour (lovely lady) patted my bump and told me that I'm tiny for how far along I am. Got in the car, drove to mums. Was greeted with "wow you are getting huge now"... Figure that one out...
