Pregnancy

30 weeks and feeling less movement

I'm 30+2 today and experiencing less movement than usual. I've hardly felt any kicks compared to normal but there has been some wriggles. The really odd thing is that if I place my hand on my belly I can sometimes feel movement/wriggling that I can't feel from inside. Has anyone else experienced this?

I think the standard advice is go to the hospital, they will scan you and confirm that everything is okay, or help you if not. Either way, you know what your baby usually does. If he/she is not doing that it needs checking out asap. Hope all is well. X.

I think babies turn/wriggle less in the latter part of pregnancy because they have grown, and there is less room to do somersaults etc. My baby certainly slowed down.

You do seem to be experiencing some movement, which should be reassuring.

I think what I'd do would depend on how near your hospital is. Given that things haven gone completely static, I might wait till tomorrow - having counted the movements - and then ring someone qualified (GP's surgery?) for advice.

Call the labour ward and discuss it. It's probably fine, but not worth the risk. They really don't mind and may ask you to monitor it for a few hours or to go in and get checked. Either way it's worth it for peace of mind. A lot can happen to a baby in 24 hours, it's just not worth the risk as far as I'm concerned.

I've been in twice in this pregnancy (now 40+4) for monitoring, and both times have been fine but the midwives didn't bat an eyelid and all said they would rather check it out and be sure

Definitely get it checked. I know someone who noticed a change in movements - less strong rather than less often and there did turn out to be a problem with placenta failing. I'm sure usually it is fine but always worth having it checked. Counting the kicks can help but if you feel that things are different listen to your gut and get checked.

I looked down the other day to see a bb elbow/knee/something sticking out at a weird angle and I hadn't felt it from inside at all (actually made me scream), I'm 31weeks - don't know if its normal but at least your not on your own Smile

Thanks everyone, I've had a quiet chilled out morning and have felt a few more movements.

You seem to feel better now which in pleased about but worth repeating. It's normal to feel less movement as the baby gets too squashed to move much but if you feel properly worried, just call the ward Smile

Any change in movement needs to be checked out. Take a look at the count the kicks campaign. It really isn't worth the risk, call your midwife.

Movements can change in nature as there is less room but you shouldn't 't feel fewer movements as such.

Please contact your labour ward/midwife or maternity assessment unit if you have any concerns about a change in movement.

A friend unfortunately didn't have a good outcome - her baby had been quiet for a couple of days but she put it down to the often bandied around myth of babies being quiet pre labour. Far better to be safe than sorry.
