Fake tan -is it a real risk? (a tad shallow but humour me!)

A bit of a light hearted post but I was wondering what all those pregnant ladies out there think of fake tan?

I'm in no way a fake-tan addict or someone who has to be plastered in the stuff before walking outside BUT now it's summer and I have to show my pasty white legs, normally I'd reach for the fake tan to make them slightly less white!

If you google it, articles mention that the DHA's in them are unsafe- but is this the same as avoiding shower gel (the latest no-no- for gods sake!) or as bad as smoking or all the other high risk things??

ANyway, would be interested to know what people think...

I went for everything in moderation during my pregnancy. The list of things to avoid seems to grow bigger and bigger everyday how can you avoid it all confused

Tan your legs I had the odd spray tan during pregnancy no ill effects so far

They say not to have a spray tan before 12 weeks, but I didn't find out I was pregnant until 14 weeks and had 1 every two weeks before that.

I've never even heard this, I wouldn't even think twice about putting a bit of tan on. I had a spray tan at 24 weeks with my son and he's 100% healthy and I'm sure if there was a problem the person doing it would tell u that it wasn't safe during pregnancy.

I never really wear tan but if I was going to a wedding or something and getting my legs out I wouldn't hesitate to slap a bit on now I'm pregnant again x

I have one every week,I live in hot country and am in a bikini every weekend. I do think the so called risks are just another stick to beat pregnant women with.

i asked a similar question a few weeks back. i think the reason is something to do with toxins seeping through your skin. hmm.... surely then perfume and other moisturisers would be just as bad?! someone mentioned that the reason not to have spray tans are about inhaling the fumes - not sure how true that is though, you're hardly snorting the stuff. i opted for a moisturising one with a bit of tan in it - think it was the garnier one - before holidays. it definitely made me feel better asi was a kind of grey shade prior to that and would've scared other beack goers in my bikini otherwise!

Thanks for the replies! I think after reading this I don't feel like such a bad mum/mother to be if I put a bit of the fake tan on! I don't do spray tans anyway (mainly due to cost) so would also be using a moisturising lotion type and not that often but like you Janieloves - my skin is on the lighter side of white so it's that or feel like a pasty white brit on holiday!
