Am about 9 weeks pregnant and have been bleeding since sunday night. Lightly, thats why not yet been to A & E. Spoke to MW y'day and no one at EPU was available with it being bank holiday, rung them this morning and as i have already had bloods taken at booking in they were going to chase those down to get exact EDD to work out what to do next. This was at 9 o clock this morning. was told a midwife would ring back. Just rung as all i have been doing all day is waiting, only to be told that the EPU closes at 2 and i have to ring back in the morning SadAngry i just want to know either way whats going on

sorry, just needed a rant and DP working

Would you feel better just going on in to A&E? It's awful to get the runaround like that. That happened to me when I got Bell's Palsy with first pregnancy. MW took 5 hours to return the call to my GP! Angry

i can't go to A & E, i would have to take the DS's (3 and 1) as theres no one to look after them (DP can't get home), more annoyed that she spoke to me like i was keep[ing her from something this morning and now this and the woman i just spoke to was a sarcastic cow as well Sad

i can go to A & E tonight but its only light bleeding...does that matter?

If your that worried, go to A & E tonight. Don't feel like you are wasting anyones time as you have a genuine concern. Just go and have your mind put at ease. Maybe you could phone NHS direct in the meantime, I have always found them helpful and they may even suggest you go to A & E in which case you can tell them you have been sent.

Hi mumofmonstors, sorry this is happenning. Don't know if A&E will do anything though - will they be able to scan you?

Report
MerlinsBeard · 30/05/2006 15:09

i don't know Northerner, the ultrasound dept is completely seperate and tehrefore proabably closes at something like 5 o clock thats the other thing stopping me going to A & E.

Its just so hard this not knowing, think i would feel better even if tehy told me there was nothing they could do. At least i would know then.Sad

I had the same problem whilst pg with dd2, i went to A&E but all they could do was a pg test which does'nt realy prove anything, i had to wait 5 days for a scan, my gp would'nt let me have a scan until bleeding had stoped and then he booked it at the wrong hospital, i was so Angry.

The NHS is sh*t, there should be someone to do scans at weekends and bank holidays.

Try and rest as much as you can and get a scan as soon as you can, good luck, fingers crossed for you.

Oh MoM how upsetting for you Sad Have they given you any kind of commitment to scan you tomorrow?

Report
MerlinsBeard · 30/05/2006 15:28

no, no commitment at all.

Urgh, Angry I feel for you MoM...I have been there, and recently too. I think you may be right about A&E - some have scanning equipment, some don't, and many won't scan unless you're having heavy cramps or bleeding buckets.
Nothing can reassure you except a scan, I know, but FWIW I had light bleeding on and off until 10.5 weeks this time around (I'm 12.5 weeks now, and all is well) and moderate bleeding twice, followed by spotting for days and days, with dd. It can be really normal - 25% of us spot/bleed in the first trimester apparently.
Wishing you loads of luck, and a scan SOON...

ps do you have any pain?

Report
2Happy · 30/05/2006 15:31

So you're supposed to what? sit around knitting singing lah-de-da and not worry?! AngryAngryAngry
Tell them you've got some pain now, low down, on one side only. They'll scan you faster than you can say ultrasound....

We don't get a routine abnormality scan at ALL here in the Lothians b/c of the shortage of staff and equipment. Get one at 13 weeks and that's it.

Northerner · 30/05/2006 15:34

YOu see I had a miscarriage over the easter weekend, the EPU at my hospital was actually open on Easter Sunday and I got a scan (all was well at this point, saw a heart beat) but I was still bleeding on the Monday and it was getting much worse, so Monday eve we went to A&E, but they said they have to get on call person to come out to scan, and they only do this in extreme cases of emergancy, and sadly, suspect m/carriage is not a medical emergency.

I totally understand that you wnat to know now, but do feel that A&E would be pretty useless in this situation. Also, the people in EPU are trained to deal with these sort of things better and it's a much better environment to be in.

Good luck.

NHS direct said to go to A & E if heavy bleeding or severe cramps.

At least tmorrow i can see a midwife at my Drs surgery even if EPU fob me off an she will go beserk at them

2Happy, Grin nearly suggested that myself...

MoM, I'm sorry...wish I could think of something, but unless you are able to get a private scan somehow, I think all you can do is try A&E tonight or wait till tomorrow. Personally, if its still light, I'd be more inclined to wait as sitting around for hours in A&E is not my favourite activity when pregnant and bleeding, especially if no guaranteed scan at the end of it.

MerlinsBeard · 30/05/2006 15:36

thats what i thought anyway Northerner, thanks x

Expat, not a routine scan i want, i want to know if i am still pregnant or am miscarry-ing

MOM, what sort of bleed is it ? Light brown ? bright red ? Think it is only likely to be something serious if it is bright red.
I had bleeding at 12 weeks with DD and had to wait from the Sunday afternoon til the tuesday to be seen at the EPU, everyone was completely crap. Hope things are OK

i had bright red blood at 14 weeks, everything is fine, so it doesnt always mean the worst. I had to go to A&E when 4 weeks pregnant with abdominal pain.... ended in surgery and the pregnancy is still okay, but, they can call the on call gyne/obs who can scan you if they think its necessary... thats who scanned me. worth considering if you are really worried or if the bleeding gets worse. I know how horrible it is having to wait to find out what is going on. xxx

MerlinsBeard · 30/05/2006 19:12

Thanks for that Spinach, reassuring to know taht not all blood is "bad blood".

Elibean, its pinky brown (sorry if tmi) but have had red this afternoon. Feel so sick now as well.

Nothing taht anyone can do til morning now anyway,
and i know that nothing can be done to stop it if it is the beginnings of a m/c

Thanks everyone for replies xx

mom could you ring the hospital switchboard and get them to put you through to Delivery Suite? I am sure someone would speak to you about your concerns and try to reassure you, or I would hope they would. What time is dh home? You can give me a ring if you want Smile
