Had a horrible doctors visit today...(22 Posts)
My GP gave me cyclizine - it was awesome, sorted my nausea right out. Well worth a try!
Thanks for the replies guys. I ended up spending yesterday in hospital as I couldn't even keep water down on friday so my OH marched me to a&e to get some help. Been given some tablets that mean i'm not throwing up anymore just feeling constantly sick.
The doctors at the hospital were really lovely and explained that I wasn't doing anything wrong, just sometimes morning sickness can be a bitch!
My OH is in the process of complaining about the nurse as a friend of mine who is also pregnant went to her with the same problem and again told her to stop being such a drama queen. Ugh it's a wonder how people get these jobs.
Been ordered to stay in bed for a few days and let my body relax, but i'm so bored already.Oh well it's better than being constantly sick I guess
"I think she thought because I am young I was just making a fuss over nothing. My OH rang the docs after I rang him crying and made me an appointment on Wednesday as he isn't working then and can come with me".
I think it's because of the media that people treat the so called young mothers differently then the other mothers.
I so hate that.
I've been watching "one born every minute". Also on that show you sometimes see such a difference between how they treat younger and older mothers.
The younger mothers in labor. If they scream some of these midwifes are like: it hurts, but bite your teeth....
Older mothers who scream there heads of: It's ok you can scream as much as you like.
Some people don't seem to understand that they're discriminating a mother on her age.
So below a certain age and you complain about morning sickness you're a drama queen and above a certain age you aren't?
What a stupid B****! I'd complain about her! I hope your next appointment will be better and they can help you.
I hope not, but imagine that's so serious that you need to go to the hospital.
I hope not for you, but for that nurse....
She'll be up to her neck in shit.
Let her explain to her boss why she didn't notice that you were in need of medical help and why she treated you so badly.
I'd and I bet so do you. We'd love to see her face when her boss asks her for an explanation.
I see that some ladies mention medication against morning sickness. I had my first 3 kids in the Netherlands. They don't have any medication over there against morning sickness. Not when I was pregnant with my first child.
If I lost more then, I don't know anymore how much. Or when for the last 24 hours I couldn't hold any fluid down. Then I had to go into hospital to get extra fluid over there.
How dare she telling you that you're a drama queen and to grow up?
I wonder if she would have said the same to Kate Middleton. I guess not!
My first pregnancy was a really difficult one for me. I've been so ill and I had lot's of uncomfortable pregnancy problems during that one.
I barely kept anything down during the 1rst 3 months.
That was so terrible. I had to keep an eye on weight and also my midwife kept a close eye on it.
I had extra appointments with her and I was just on the edge of being hospitalized, because I didn't gain any weight I only lost weight during the 1rst trimester.
Either that nurse never has been pregnant in her life. Or she was lucky and had a really easy one.
What ever her problem is. She had no right what so ever to treat you like that.
Normal morning sickness is uncomfortable, but not dangerous. But if it's getting out of hand you'll need medical help. You and your baby could be loosing to much fluid and not getting enough food in your body.
She should have had a proper look at you! Even if you're in good health you're absolutely not a drama queen!
Being a normal pregnant woman isn't as easy and fun as it looks like. Sometimes being pregnant just feels like *********
It's normal to ask the question on such a moment if everything is alright and is this still normal?
Sometimes it's and sometimes you need medical help.
Let someone have a good look at you. Is there anyone who could go with you to your next appointment?
I think boots sell the sickness bands, brand name sea bands. In the pharmacy or travel bit.
I was prescribed buccastem in pregnancy, it didn't help much...but it does for some people. So dr then gave me cyclizine.
That's really terrible.
I know this is naughty but please don't flame. You can get buccastem over the counter which is often prescribed for sickness in pregnancy. It's as safe as any of the drugs are and is the same drug as I've been prescribed, stemetil, but in a form you stick under your lip, which is great if you are actually throwing up.
Might be worth getting hold of some and trying it.
I've just bought sickness bands and the difference is amazing. Granted I was only feeling sick, not actually throwing up but for the first time in weeks I feel slightly normal (apart from the bloating, sore boobs, tiredness and metallic taste in my mouth....but I'll take those any day over sickness). Seriously - money very well spent! Good luck xx
Thanks for the replies guys
A sickness band? Where one earth do I get one of those from?
I'm sorry you've had a rubbish appointment, she sounds like she could do with some re-training!
Do you have an anti sickness band? They're marketed for car sickness...they've helped me eat a little bit more.
Sympathy about the horrible nurse- make the appt with the Dr so at least you have that to focus on.
In terms of practical suggestions, I had bad nausea and sickness but not HG. I made sure that whatever it was I fancied, I went and bought it then and there (or sent OH) as eating something that was just placed in front of me was a no no- it was like there was 99 things I didn't fancy that made me sick and 1 that would be ok!
If liquids are ok, try clear or thin soups, juice/smoothie- basically drinks with a bit of nutrition.
Eat little and often - never get full or hungry.
Finally don't eat anything too spicy/acidic that will burn when it comes back up- made that mistake a couple of times! Ate a packet of citrus Starburst which I then threw up- that burned!
It doesn't last forever (for most)- mine is now mostly gone at 15 weeks.
Hi you might like to join our hyperemesis thread, we are a lovely bunch of pukey mums and can offer support and advice. It's so awful when your suffering is belittled. The GP I saw said well as you've only been sick five or six times today lets wait and see if it gets wore before trying medication. I was in hospital a week later. So wish I could have called and said 'bad enough?' it's very upsetting but take NO notice and do go back with support. Poor you. Virtual hug coming your way.
I ended uo in hospital on drips at one point and there is a lady in August thread who is still having to go in daily for fluids as hers is so bad. Some of the idiots at drs surgeries need a lesson in customer service!!
Don't believe the rubbish about ginger either cos it made me worse! If you can keep.fluids down try watery soups or dissolve a stock cube and try that as at least you will get some nutrients from it.
I'm so sorry to hear you've had such a bad experience. I had a similar experience too in early pregnancy, and it was only when I moved surgeries that I realised it really wasn't normal for people to treat you like that. I would highly recommend you look into other surgeries in your area and try else where - my current local surgery has a wonderful doctor, midwife and nurse, who are all extremely supportive!
So much for learning from the Francis report, I think you'd be doing her a favour if you reported her. Sounds like she could do with some training. I hope you feel better soon.
Thanks guys. She was horrible, it's not like i'm making it up! I seem to be able to keep water down fine but it's as soon as solid food hits my stomach all hell breaks loose.
I think she thought because I am young I was just making a fuss over nothing. My OH rang the docs after I rang him crying and made me an appointment on Wednesday as he isn't working then and can come with me.
Ooh thanks for the tip BabyHMummy I brought some orange juice today, so shall pop some in the freezer for tomorrow
I hope that nurse gets hyperemesis one day.
I've seen people hospitalised due to morning sickness and put on iv drips. Funnily enough the drs at the hospital don't tell them to grow up.
I had bad hyperemesis when I was pregnant and thankfully had a sympathetic dr who prescribed meds which I was on for the whole pregnancy. See your gp on Tuesday.
Sorry you are feeling rough and were not treated well. Sounds like the nurse needs some re training. Are you keeping fluids down? They should have dipped your wee if there are ketones in the wee that is an indication for referral in for I've fluids.
What a witch!!! She has no right to say that.
Make a Gp appt and see them cos thy can give you tablets to help ease it. Be warned it can take several attempts to find one that works for you (i think i tried 5) but thy can help.
Just make sure that you drink plenty...take small sips and often rather than gulps or trying to drink a whole glass in one go as it will help. Sucking on ice cubes (or freeze fresh orange juice) also helps.
Sending huge hugs to you and slaps to the evil nurse Xxx
I have discovered that I can keep grapes down this afternoon. I think this is the first thing in 3 days that has stayed put. Thanks for the advice. I feel worse when i'm hungry too but i'm fed up of eating just to throw it up again haha!
Whatever happened to bedside manner?
FWIW, it's a horrible cycle - I was more likely to throw up if I was hungry, so I ate little and often and tried to stay away from sweet quick fixes. I found that, on a bad day, a small slice of ham or piece of cheese was more likely to stay down than something like a biscuit or cracker, even if it took more effort to eat in the first place.
I've been really suffering with morning sickness and a friend said to go to the doctors because they can give you something to help. I cant seem to keep anything solid down for more than half an hour, so i'm feeling hugely drained.
I hate going to the doctors but I plucked up the courage to go, on my own as OH was at work, and was seen by a nurse as I didn't have an appointment. The next available appointment with the doctor was tuesday, so didn't want to wait that long and the receptionist said the nurse could treat me anyway.
I told the nurse about my morning sickness and asked if there was anything they could do to help and instead of the sympathy and advice I needed she basically told me that I was being a drama queen and to grow up.
It took a lot for me to actually go to see anyone and this nurse has made me feel even worse. Today has been a rubbish day.
