Just ordered myself some from Holland + Barrett I am 37 wks and suffering really badly with SPD. Baby is already 7lb and I'm not sleeping due to the SPD + carrying a big baby means I just can't get comfy so I've decided to get some of the Raspberry leaf capsules in the hope they might encourage things to happen. Just wondered what every ones experience of these was

Raspberry leaf isn't supposed to start labour (nothing does, they're all old wives' tales), it's taken in pregnancy as it's a uterine tonic, meant to make the second stage more efficient.

I'm not sure when it started being lumped in with curry and pineapple and other folk tales, but the theory behind using it in pregnancy is nothing to do with induction of labour.

I drank the tea because I like it and I drink it when not pregnant too. Grin

I took them - I went 2 weeks early but I doubt it was down to the RLT. But I do believe they helped with labour. Certainly it was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be.

I've got 4 dcs I took raspberry leaf capsules with the first three and they were all early. Didn't take them with dc4. He was a week late.

I'm hearing so many different things some people swear by it + apprantley its been clinically proven to help + others say it doesn't so I'm very confused but never the less my bottle of capsules will be here soon + will start taking them + will see if they work. I drank Raspberry leaf tea, ate pineapple + had a very hot bath with my daughter + that night my waters broke so not sure what did it but I got the outcome I was hoping for !

In all clinical tests it has been shown to make no difference to labour starting. Neither pineapple nor hot baths (not recommended in pregnancy actually) or any of the other stuff (sex, walking etc) have ever shown to work in any trials ever. Of course some people will do something and labour will start. This is anecdote, not data. Millions more will do things and labour won't start. Or like me, my labours started through Sitting and Sleeping. Does Sitting Down start labour? No. Nor does the rice I was eating but if somebody suggested it did then I could say oh yes I ate rice and my waters broke. It's coincidence.

The only thing that works is chemical induction.

There's bog all wrong with doing these things if it makes you feel better but empirical evidence tells us they don't work. Feeling better is a good thing though.

As long as you do things which you don't mind doing. I know too many people who have had crap sex, eaten pineapple which they don't like and curry which caused upset stomachs and STILL not had a baby and it's uncomfortable and demoralising.

Agree with others, raspberry leaf tea will not make baby arrive early but could make your birth easier and quicker. I drank gallons last time I was pg and dd arrived in 4 hours, start to finish.

No I read this last night after doing a google search on Raspberry leaf tea it said that Red Raspberry leaf tea/capsules work + loads of ladies had commented on how it had worked for them. I guess I am a bit naïve !

They can't really know if it worked for them though can they? Unless they knew exactly what day Lo would have arrived without taking them.....

I took them from around 34 weeks and went into labout at 37+5. 6 hour labour and drug-free water birth. That was my first. Now TTC no.2 and will be taking them again once we get pg!

I drank the tea from 30weeks and increased it after 34 weeks I went over and was in labour for 5 days with a 2hr pushing stage, opposed to ds1s 4hr labour 5 mins pushing without the tea. So didn't do diddle for me unfortunately

I was pushing for 2 hours with DD, and for 7 hours with DS.

Both ended up with forceps. I had PPH both times. My uterus was far from toned. It's bollocks (tea was nice with sugar though)
