Weird smell cravings...

I had hyperemesis from weeks 7 to 17 so didn't really get any food cravings in my pregnancy but I'm craving for certain smells now at nearly 29 weeks.
I've always likes the smell of soil especially when you get potatoes that before you've washed the dirt off them smells of that soily smell, and I'm desperate to sniff some now.
For a long time I was unable to stop sniffing dettol but that craving has gone now.
However at work the other day, (I'm a nurse ), I opened up an elderly lady patient's bag of clothing and it had this really musty smell. My mum says it sounded like mothballs. It smelled soooo good!
I was there ages inhaling it...don't worry I didn't want to eat it but does anyone else have smell cravings and where can I find more mothballs to feed my addiction?!!

Ha! moth balls? I had this with my first pregnancy - I loved dirty smells, and going to wickes was such a treat so I could sniff paint and varnishy smells. The things I loved the most was tarmacy road work smells. I would salivate through the bus windows when going past road works, and have to force myself to stay on and not get out for a sniff! It is so wierd. My sister loved the smell of rubber and used to lock herself in the gym cupbard at school to sniff the mats (a teacher) , and kept a plimsole under her bed to take sneaky niffs from!

Get down a charity shop for some mothball smells - mind you, they are all a bit tarted up now, so not sure you will get the smell you used to get off oxfam clothes in the old days....

I had pretty bad hyperemesis with ds. No cravings food wise but, I remember walking back from the midwife one day and taking lots of detours as I was trying to find where the bonfire was. The smokey smell was the only thing that I remember having an appetite for my entire pregnancy.

No ms with dd. No cravings either. Shame really.

My craving smell was mr sheen furniture polish. So much so that I had to spray some on a tissue and put it in my work/going out bag so i could have a cheeky smell if out and about. The craving only intensified towards the end of my pregnancy and needless to say my house was extremely clean for those last two weeks awaiting babies arrival x

Oooh yes - I've been sniffing Vicks every time I go in the bathroom, and put a sneaky bit on for bed last night even though I haven't got a cold.

Last pregnancy I was obsessed with my lemon kitchen spray - I genuinely wanted to spray it in my mouth Shock but restrained myself.

Basically any "clean" medicinal type smells.

Good quality, rich leather smell. I spend my lunch break surfing web to try and find a good quality leather bag at a mark down so I can just smell it.

Bought one recently that didn't smell and sent it back. I am very odd- am taking sneaky sniffs of my DH's Church's shoes. Bonkers!

My auntie craved the smell of petrol fumes when pregnant! Unbelievable!
(Her kids are all fine!)

It was petrol and exhaust fumes for me later in pregnancy with DD. Also the air blown out of the vacuum cleaner.
Now, it just smells of dog.

I was craving the smell of car window cleaner in my first trimester. The only thing that stopped me feeling sick when travelling!

About 30 weeks I used to walk past a petrol station on the way to work. Oh the smells, they were gorgeous! :) And then work had the painters in, that was just yummy! :o Only lasted a couple of weeks though.

I rub dove soap on my sponge and rinse it off a few times so the smell is still there and then chew my sponge

Lol gingerbreadpixie, I'm having a much needed chuckle too!
(I just cried because my husband put his socks on in the living room whilst I was eating breakfast!)

I actually thought mothballs were what moths left behind, but mothballs are a chemical repellant. I bought some on eBay, but then found out the chemicals are very toxic so I will have to throw them away when they get here :-(

Another one I have just thought of is the smell of damp flannels, I have been leaving damp flannels everywhere and every time I sniff I want to suck out the water. How gross is that?!

I also found out that there's a name for eating or craving to eat non edible stuff called Pica and is caused by a nutritional deficiency.
I am low on iron so blaming it all on that.
Maybe you ladies should get yourselves checked out just in case!
Xxx

Gross! I had hyperemesis and it was smells that set me off. No cravings either :(
My friend however loved petrol or failing that, would stand by gas boilers. Her baby seems fine, eek!!

I used to love smelling Vicks. With both pregnancies. I used to take it around with me. I reckon I used to get high from it
Oh the smell! I tried eating it once but it wasn't the same.

I smelt it after I was pregnant and it wasn't the same.

I had lots of smell cravings with DS1.

Petrol was a main one, we had a BP garage a couple of streets away & I'd walk over to buy a magazine or some other overpriced crap just so I could smell the petrol.

Burnt matches were another one, thankfully not at the same time as the petrol.

I also liked fuzzy peach from the body shop. I carried around a little bottle of shower gel so I could stop for a wee sniff.

I didn't really crave smells in my other two pregnancies, I don't know what was different about that one.

Tiger balm and a most disturbing attachment to Tesco bathroom spray. I carried some in my handbag for a week or so.
