Pregnancy

Can I possibly know that it is twins?

Hello
I'm 8 weeks pregnant with my second child and I am absolutely convinced that it is twins. Even more than that, I think it is twin boys. Nuts, I know! Everytime I imagine the future with my new baby, there are two of them. I even been looking up twin buggies and how to breast feed twins. Why?!

Pregnancy does feel different this time round - I've felt sick whereas last time I had no nausea at all, I'm less tired, and I am showing already. I'm sure I didn't show this much until I was about 12 weeks last time. 8 weeks is early to have a bump, right? But none of that adds up to twins.

So - does anyone else have strong feelings about what they are having? Any mothers of twins know before the 12 week scan?

Thanks!

I had a very strong feeling I was having another boy in my second pg. 20 week scan lady said boy. We had a girl.

My friend was convinced as she had severe nausea and was tired to the point where she had to take 3 weeks of work. She had had 2 children before. She was right!

I am 17 weeks with twins, and have to say, I had absolutely NO idea at all, it was a huge huge shock - to the point where I hyperventilated!
I did however, find out it was twins at a dating scan at 6 weeks - I booked in for this as although my dates concluded I was about 6 weeks, i was already popping out of my clothes and I thought I must have been further and my last period must have been a bleed or something. Low and behold - my dates were right, but there were two! Then the sickness kicked in. Most twin mums I have known/ spoken to have experienced quite severe sickness at the beginning.
You never know!
I will also add though I was convinced they were girls - right to the point where I actually bought girly baby clothes - and turns out they are in fact boys! so sometimes hormones can send the intuition a bit up the creek!

My friend's family had no history of twins at all, but she said from the moment of her pregnancy test (she already had a little boy) that she felt sure it was twins. And so it was! Boy/girl. She was in fits of giggles when the sonographer confirmed it.

Thanks guys. Just found a similar thread on the multiple births forum and some very funny stories of knowing and not knowing (the best/worst didn't know until after the first one was born and the midwife says "oh look there's another"!)

Thank goodness for modern scans and having 6 months to get our heads around it, however many there are going to be. Pregnancy has to be the most exciting, scary and BORING time ever. Far too much waiting to find out!

Night night

Have to say I was showing by 8 weeks and had severe nausea by 5 weeks. Convinced it was twins, it's not, it's a girl! No 2 pregnancies are the same, this has been so very different from DS.
I certainly wouldn't say you had any more chance than anyone else, and it's only 1in80 so probably not.
Good luck with your pregnancy.

Hi OP, I'm exactly the same and posted the exact same thread in multiple births...weird!

Currently 11 weeks with DC2, I'm convinced it's twins and I think I'm mad as well.

I was convinced it was twins, awful morning sickness, so hormonal, hair and skin went to shit.
I just felt twice as pregnant as I did with dd1. Oh I looked about 20 weeks at the 12 week scan, and was already using the bobble thingy on my work trousers.

And I was right. Grin

By the way identical twins are not hereditary so sometimes it doesn't make a difference if there is or isn't twins in your family.

Good luck.

I was once on a whole thread where everyone thought they were pregnant with twins. I was convinced I was, I just had a 'feeling' and I also felt I had a lot more pressure in my lower abdomen than in my singleton pregnancies. By the day of my 12 week scan I jokingly said to the booking midwife that it might be twins (I had had a twin pregnancy before, but sadly lost them very early on, well before 12 weeks) but by the time they scanned me I was too busy looking for my baby to think about it. As the sonographer started scanning she said 'do you see anything' and I just said 'what?' and my DH said 'twins!' and it was! So, yes, you can have a feeling and be right. Grin

Just joining in as a few days before I got my bfp both my husband and I said in the morning 'I had a really strange dream last night...' He went first and we had both dreamt I was pregnant with twins...! Anyway I'm only 7ish weeks so still have a while to wait but have been googling 'is there a way of knowing its twins' when I say this thread...

I'm showing already - but probably cause its number 3 -

Feel sick - but in the evening and less then with ds1 and ds2

No other clues except the worst exhaustion in the world which again I presume is working full time with 2 children...

Anyway update when you can -

The first time with twins I could have fallen off the bed in shock, I had a bump but thought it was cos my eldest was only 8 months when I got pregnant. The 2nd time with twins, I knew it was - the night before the scan I even felt a flutter each side of my belly so wasn't surprised in the slightest :-)

My third pregnancy was twins (but I lost one during the pregnancy) and I didn't have a clue until the scan. My fourth pregnancy I was big very early on, had severe morning sickness (which I had never had before) and was exhausted. Dh and me were both convinced it must be twins. We were wrong, it was just one.

One of my friends thought she was carrying twins, from very early in her pregnancy. She didn't feel any different to her previous two pregnancies, but just had a feeling. She was right, it was twins.

My mum was absolutely convinced that something wasn't right in her last pregnancy (3rd PG) so much so that she thought there must have been something very wrong with the baby and had gotten really upset that she may have to have a termination.

The MW was very concerned about her anxiety so booked in an early scan at 7 Weeks and it turned out it was twins :o

Hi Longfufu, interesting to hear another person with the same "feeling". Will be fun to find out if either of us are right! Will update after the scan - which is a long, long way away!

Do they still do twin insurance?

I remember being pg with dc1 12 years ago and you could pay something like £10 at boots before the 12 week scan and if it was twins you were given about £150 (I think I an totally making these amounts up!) but I thought with all the early scans you can have done now this would have fizzled out.

Hi, my scan is this Thursday 2pm.....twins....no twins that is the question? This pregnancy so far has been so different from my first, my DH thinks it may be a girl...I will have a nervous breakdown if it is twins.

Do let us know, both of you.

I found out at my 13 week scan. Got the shock of my life, totally unexpected! I had awful morning sickness & exhaustion but it was my first pregnancy and I had nothing to compare it to. My twins are now 4 months old.

With my first pregnancy, I was convinced that I was having a girl. Turned out to be twin boys. With my 2nd pregnancy, I was a lot less sick so convinced I'd just be having a singleton. Twin girls! Shouldn't have been surprised really as one of my boys (then aged about 2.6) had kept pointing at my tum and shouting "2, 2 girls!!!" Still kicking myself for not taking out twin insurance... Grin
