Need reasons/excuses for not drinking tonight?!

HELP?! 11 weeks PG & going out for New Years tonight, I need an excuse or reason for not drinking, we're going to our local pubs' fancy dress party & haven't told friends & BF's parents yet who are all going to be there, need an excuse for not drinking as we're not ready to tell them yet?! My best friend has suggested saying I'm on antibiotics but what for I'm not a great liar so this is going to be difficult.
Also can't say I've stopped drinking because I drank like an alcoholic loving fish before!! They would guess so easily.

Drink things that look alcoholic? Tonic without vodka etc? Or say you are alternating alcoholic and non - as long as people are taking it in turns to buy rounds no one will spot it!

Could you just drink coke but say it's vodka and coke? Just act normally and don't mention it unless anyone asks?

Antibiotics for something?

Have a word with the bar person and drink a 'spirit' and a mixer all night. Obviously they would be subbing in something else. If you don't normally drink spirits just say its because you're trying to lose weight and order diets all night?

You and DH don't buy in rounds and just buy for each other because you are 'watching the pennies' .

You can also get non alcoholic beer/cider/ginger beer but this would mean hiding the label?

You could make it seem authentic by falling over a bit and showing your knickers of something Grin

Thanks guys usually I do drink spirits so could do, our friends all work on the bar tho so they will know. Hmmff, I wouldn't even bother going because of all this hassle but I have put so much effort into my costume. May buy the odd glass of wine & give to BF when I go to the loo, he will be well & truly sloshed by midnight!

When I first found out I was pregnant with DD, we went to a friend's wedding. For the first couple of hours, I had a glass of soda water that I kept getting topped up - everyone just assumed it was a G&T or something. I had to let a few people buy me drinks and then slip them to DH. (He thought this was a great plan...)

I had one glass of wine with the meal that I pretty much kept going the whole night. Or at least until people were too drunk themselves to notice what I was doing! Luckily, it turns out I can blabber shit and dance like an idiot without the assistance of alcohol Grin

Anyway, hope that gives you a few ideas. Congratulations on your pregnancy!

Tell them you got so off your face last night that you are still drunk.

& TeaBrick I don't need the alcohol to do that, I am possibly the clumsiest person on earth could slip more than usual. However my best friend & her BF who are in on the secret are going so I can just keep giving her my wine actually!! Wink

Can you say you're driving, or is pub too close?
I think people will guess :(

You got drunk last night and have a hangover and cannot face it?

Accept an alcoholic drink but get your dp to drink it! Not too many times though or he'll be off his face! Xmas Grin

I had a big night out with close friends last week and was so nervous about this as I wasn't ready to tell them (am at 7+4).

I just had sparkling water or lemonade and told everyone it was gin and tonic, and then hubbie or I just bought me a new one before my glass got too low so no one else had thought to offer me a drink yet - no one noticed a thing or even questioned it. After the first hour everyone else will start to feel drunk anyway and won't notice. Good luck! And congratulations :)

Antibiotics for a cough - it's a good and valid reason this time of the year.
Driving - valid one
Starting the dryathlon early as a promise to someone.
Promise to not drink but only buy drinks for anyone who needs one Wink that will shut most people up IMO

I had to have antibiotics for a VERY personal Lady Reason Grin and as soon as you say Lady Reason, nobody asks any further!

And the AB's you get for Lady Reasons are the ones that make you vomit really badly if taken with any alcohol at all.

congratulations!

No used the driving excuse Christmas Eve, pub is over the road from BF's house.
I'm just going to pretend to drink I think, they know I had a quiet night in last night because everyone was trying to get us to go out last night. Thanks for all your tips, I'll let you know how my fake drunk ness gets on tomorrow!!

No no. Antibiotics only works as a 'please don't ask me any questions' bluff. It is like wearing a big flashing sign saying you are up the duff. There are only a tiny handful which actually require you not to drink. Every time someone has told me that they aren't drinking because they are on anti-biotics and are about that age/stage in life, I have commiserated politely and waited for the announcement... I suspect people think it works because polite people would never openly challenge whether someone is pregnant or not.

Far more convincing to accept drinks and sub non alcoholic ones. This is much easier with one or two 'wing men' to help you.

New Years resolution? Cut down on drinks coz you indulged too much over Christmas?

Report
GalaxyDisaStar · 31/12/2012 17:21

Yes, combing with 'i'm cutting down' works well. Fewer drinks to fix.

HazeltheMcWitch · 31/12/2012 17:22

Agree that accepting/swapping drinks probably easier. Only need to concenrate on this for first few drinks, as after that everyone has relaxed/started to get pished themselves.

The other one I have used is 'I feel fat', and cutting out drink is the quickest way for me to lose weight. This can be embellished by referencing X event/interview/whatever that you need to feel good for/fit into Y outfit for.

And congrats btw!

Just have a glass of wine in hand at all times and always be chatting when someone offers you a drink.

"Oh thanks but I haven't even got through this one yet as I'm talking too much!"

Then have the occasional water or soft drink because you're thirsty. No-one noticed at work nights out for five months that I hadn't drunk a thing. Smile

To be honest I woukd have a couple of soft drinks first and declare I was SO THIRSTY, and got an empty stomach, and then accept an alcoholic one that I woukd keep going all night.

I woukd probably do G&T and accept only ts, stating that the g was a double and you think the barman was overly generous with the measure. That shoukd get you through 3-4 drinks by which time you coukd claim to be SO drunk you need to slow down.

I nursed drinks like spritzers and bitter shandies, also 'drank' the same as husband and did the switcheroo of the glasses. Hopefully pub will be busy enough so nobody will notice stuff like that. Also if you get involved with several groups of rounds you can always say 'no thanks, Emma just got me one' etc to confuse them!

Agree about the ABs, our group of friends always use 'water infection' as the pregnancy announcement! Also driving excuses were always met with raised eyebrows and polite smiles, announcements a couple of months later were no surprise!

Congratulations and best of luck. Enjoy New Year!
