Pregnancy

Why blood tests??

Hi all...just been to have blood tests done after visiting DRs last week to inform them I am pregnant (6months after MMC).
I asked what they were for..to be told to test for pregnancy. :/ ????
I've done 13 tests (different brands) & all BFP. I asked if I had to have bloods repeated in 48 hours to check for increasing levels & they said no.
So why am I having them then?
Will it show my pregnancy hormone is high enough for my weeks?
DRs isn't very good but my only local surgery
:(

Most surgeries will take you at your word for a BFP but I've heard of some testing to make sure you're definitely pregnant and it wasn't an issue with the tests. It seems daft when you've done 13 but I was equally amazed when I told them I was pregnant and they just took me at my word lol.

Perhaps they'll look at your hormone levels? Is it the HCGs they measure in early pregnancy? I had this done the first time round when I had a big bleed in week 5.

Yes I think so. The nurse said the doctor was very vague & that maybe it was for my peace of mind. I guess I will know more next week. Confused
So I guess there must be a certain range (hormone level) you must be in at each week..may be that's what they are checking. Hmm

I've been told its to confirm my blood group, rhesus status and a few general other checks... (which may be to confirm if I'm pregnant!)

I had to have one for my first pregnancy 10 years ago as 'confirmation' but not this time yet it's the same Drs, it's probably just individual surgeries policy.

I did have a blood test at the first midwife appt at 8 weeks which is a general health check.

Yep, I had to have a blood test to confirm pregnancy before they would let me book an appointment with the midwife, despite having done 4 hpts Hmm
They didn't get me to do one 20 months before with DS and neither did my friend have to do one 6 months later Confused

They'll do hormones but also probably full blood count (anaemia), liver function, kidney function (U&E), possibly crp (infection).
If you don't know, ASK! they have to tell you what they doing!

Thank you all for your responses. Just thought that as I told them i didnt want to be under midwifery care til I know all is well after 12 week scan..may be that's why they're doing bloods. As if I don't go to midwife..I won't get bloods done?
These doctors aren't very good & I'm ashamed to say I've stayed as long as I have. Blush But moving doctors means quite a bus journey to our next towns surgery. They don't seem reassuring to my worry about this pregnancy after my previous (MMC) & although I know they must see women like me everyday..it feels they aren't interested in what I am saying, my concerns or even filling telling me why bloods etc are being done.

I had to see my midwife first in order for her to book my 12 week scan. So check that the dr is booking this for you else you might miss out.

Didn't have a blood test done to confirm pregnancy but the practice nurse did do a pregnancy test whilst I was there. The first one I did at the surgery was negative as well, so I had to make another appointment a week later to be checked again. The nurse had just insisted I must of tested wrong at home as I 'clearly wasn't pregnant'. Never had to have it confirmed with any of my others though. I think it just depends on the dr.

I guess as I don't want to go to midwife yet, they are doing the job of the midwife & doing all bloods etc.
