I miscarried my first pregnancy at 23 weeks due to the neural tube defect called Anenecaphaly. I was told that taking folic acid tabs before conception and up to 12 weeks pregnancy could've helped. However this condition occurred 4 weeks after conception when I did not know I was pregnant. This condition was recognised by the sonographer at my anonomly scan and I miscarried a couple of weeks later. However I have been told by 3 other doctors etc that this condition should've been recognised on my 12 weeks scan...which it wasn't!! 6 years on I'm pregnant again (after careful planning this time) and am scared that the same thing will happen again and I will not know about it until much later on......does anyone know if I will recieve extra scans?? My doctor is GP is being very hazy.......

This happened to a close family member of mine - found out at 20 week scan and subsequently lost their baby. If it helps at all everything was absolutely fine second time around and they now have a very healthy daughter. I don't think they had extra scans the next time around but I could be wrong. I certainly don't think it is unreasonable to ask for them under the circumstances (if not demand them!!).

Good luck - everything crossed for you and I am sure all will be well this time around Smile

OP - I wouldn't expect too much from your GP as he / she is unlikely to be managing your care going forward. I would raise it with the midwife as soon as you get to see her and definitely at your booking in appointment. Also, at your 12 week scan make sure that you explain to the sonographer so that they are looking extra carefully in order to reassure you.

I'm sure everything will be fine this time and good luck!

You`ll be scanned by the fetomaternal specialist prob at approx 12-16 weeks. Screening has come on a lot in the last 6 years .Hugs and congrats on your pregnancy x

Hi
You should be taking high dose folic acid (5mg) to reduce the risk of this happenening again. See your GP for a prescription ASAP. Also make contact early with your midwife and ask for an early referal. Oh and congratulations and good luck.
