Starting to panic about upcoming scan

(30 Posts)

I have a screening scan on Wednesday and I'm getting more and more stressed and apprehensive as it approaches. I'm not worried about the screening side of it. I'm terrified that there will be nothing there because I'm not pregnant and never was and all the symptoms I've had have been phantom ones. All I can think about now is how I'm going to tell the expectant grandparents that it's all a mistake and how ashamed I will feel. sad

I did 2 tests which were both positive a couple of weeks ago and the midwife thinks, based on my symptoms, that I'm now 12 weeks gone. But despite desperately wanting it to be true, I just don't believe it. I feel like I'm deluding myself by feeling pregnant. I'm so confused. I'm going to let everyone down on Wednesday when I find out it's all a figment of my imagination sad

It's completely normal to get anxious before the scans. I did beofre all three of mine (am 21 weeks).

I don't think you can argue with two positive pregnancy test though!!! As far as i'm aware false positives are pretty much unheard of, much more likely to get a false negative.

You are pregnant smile

What symptoms have you had?

If it makes you feel a bit better do another test to put your mind at ease, although try not to let that get out of hand! All your stress and anxiety will melt away when you see it all on the screen, it's such an abstract concept up until that point. A lot of women have had thoughts like yours before scans (including myself!) just try not to let it take over.

Go and do something nice, meet up with friends, busy yourself until Wednesday.

I've had breasts so sore I couldn't take my bra off (like peeling cellotape off an open wound), nausea for approx 4 weeks, headaches, pelvic pain, peeing all the time, can't sleep, sudden massive hikes in body temp that make me look like a tomato, fatigue so bad I didn't move off the sofa for 2 days, big changes in appetite and tastes, and not having a period for 2 months or more.

I know, I know, everything says that I am, apart from me.

I have thought every day about doing yet another test but I can't face it in case it does say negative and then my glimmer of hope will die. sad

I'm being daft aren't I?

FlaminNoraImPregnantPanda Sun 21-Oct-12 16:02:55

Forgot: most of those symptoms have almost gone now, hence the midwife thinking I was at the end of the first trimester rather than in the middle.

Kelerina Sun 21-Oct-12 17:29:15

This too shall pass as they say. As time goes on you will become more confident and relaxed, I know I am.

As I said, try and busy yourself between now and Wednesday and it will come quickly, the scan will be the first hurdle over with, the first landmark of your pregnancy and you will feel better afterwards.

Symptoms do come and go, mine have anyway.

It all sounds pretty unequivocal to me!

Let us know how you get on smile

I felt like this too, I think it's utterly normal to worry that the scan will find nothing!

But if you're not pregnant then where is your period and why were two pregnancy tests positive, hmm? You will be fine smile

HavingALittleFaithBaby Sun 21-Oct-12 18:32:15

Hey Panda. I was exactly the same. But I kept reminding myself I hadn't had a period in months! The relief when we had the scan and saw it wriggling was amazing smile I confess I cried! I think what you're feeling is normal but you have to try to stay positive! I kept telling myself there's no reason to think anything will go wrong with this pregnancy.

FlaminNoraImPregnantPanda Mon 22-Oct-12 11:12:59

Noblegiraffe, I keep convincing myself that I haven't had a period because it's menopause (I'm 40 so although early not entirely unusual) or because I've lost so much weight over the past few months. And the positive tests are because I'm some sort of weird scientific anomaly hmm

OhGood Mon 22-Oct-12 11:16:21

panda sorry but I had to laugh. And I was exactly the same in terms of not believing I was pregnant and feeling totally weirded out by it. And the 12-week scan did nothing to convince me, and neither did the 20-week scan, and neither did the baby moving, and neither did labour; I was completely suprised when a baby appeared at the end of it all.

Oh well, I suppose if that happens at least I won't be worrying about the not upcoming birth. grin

Yikes, D-day today. Am off to the hospital now.

curiousgeorgie Wed 24-Oct-12 08:40:37

Good luck Panda! Everything will be fine smile

HorridHeffalumpsWickedWoozles Wed 24-Oct-12 08:50:34

I had the same absolute terror coming up to first scan with DD1, really thought there would be nothing there and I'd be told I'd imagined it all. It was such a fantastic relief to see our little wriggling baby in the screen, I said to the sonographer how convinced I was that nothing would show up and she said almost every first time mum she scans had the same fear. I was really surprised because I'd thought I was being totally ridiculous and irrational, but it runs out we all are!

Good luck with your scan today OP smile

cookiewuk Wed 24-Oct-12 09:53:33

Good luck with your scan! I had my first scan on Monday and was absolutely fine until I was lying there and she started moving the scanner over my tummy. Then the panic hit so suddenly that there was nothing there and she was going to think me an idiot etc! Thankfully after a delay that seemed like a lifetime she said I had a baby in there smile My ds was mesmerized and when I eventually got to see my little wriggler it was amazing! X

cookiewuk Wed 24-Oct-12 09:54:29

Oops meant dp not ds!

Littlemissimpatient Wed 24-Oct-12 09:56:09

Good luck panda

HavingALittleFaithBaby Wed 24-Oct-12 10:01:04

Good luck! Try not to wriggle too much with that full bladder! smile

FlaminNoraImPregnantPanda Wed 24-Oct-12 13:57:27

Well ... it appears that there really is a baby panda grin Not a very compliant one mind. I had to keep shaking my hips and dropping down onto the bed to shake BabyPanda into the right position for measurements. This was immediately followed by sommersaults and a return to the original position. Takes after Dad.

Tiredtrout Wed 24-Oct-12 14:01:08

Congratulations!

HavingALittleFaithBaby Wed 24-Oct-12 14:03:34

Congratulations! Sounds a lot like mine smile

Littlemissimpatient Wed 24-Oct-12 14:11:04

Congratulations!!

noblegiraffe Wed 24-Oct-12 14:16:57

Congratulations! See, we all said it would be fine! grin

I had to do all the shimmying too, but my baby wouldn't comply at all and they couldn't even do the measurements.

Same at 20 weeks, they had to tilt the scan table so I was practically upside down. Something to look forward to if you've got an awkward one wink

OhGood Wed 24-Oct-12 14:27:53

Congratulations! grin
