Pregnancy

I am incredibly thirsty all the time - normal? 22 weeks.

Don't know if it is anything to worry about but I am finding that I am incredibly thirsty - it comes up on me very unexpectedly and then I feel so dehydrated and have to guzzle about 3 glasses of water in one go - have to drink throughout the night too - which is awful because it means I have to get up to pee about ten times a night. I remember reading ages ago about thirst being related to diabetes - I have that glucose test in Nov - could I have it?

I felt like this and didn't have diabetes, but it's important you get checked just in case. Go and see your GP and tell them what's happening. Hopefully you will be like me and just a thirsty bugger! :)

Why do you need to wait until November? Don't chemists just do a finger prick test there and then? I've had it done at a chemist, I just walked in and got it done straight away.

doesn't mean you have diabetes - think of all that amniotic fluid you're making before even keeping you and the baby hydrated - but just as well to have the test.

20 weeks and have been extremely thirsty all the time, but there's no glucose in my urine so I guess it's just that growing a baby takes a lot of water! MW will have been checking your urine at appointments, but you can always see your GP or pharmacist earlier than Nov if you're really worried.

To reassure you - I have been incredibly thirsty throughout this pregnancy (my 3rd) too, much more so than previously. I worried a few weeks back that it might be GD however the MW has never picked up on any glucose problems when testing at my regular appts.

Do make an additional appt so see MW or GP and get it checked just in case but remember how much extra fluid your body requires in pregnancy, amniotic fluid, 4 extra pints of blood flowing round your veins, all that fluid being that's retained in your feet/hands/ankles etc

I have been really thirsty too, to the extent that DH commented on it. I had a GT test done and I'm fine - I just obviously need more liquid than I was used to drinking!

I was permanently thirsty throughout pregnancy it's normal. Also good to drink water anyway as will stop you getting constipated which is very common when pregnant.

I agree it seems pretty normal. I too get it creeping up on me - I suddenly feel so thirsty that i get really panicky and could almost cry! Confused I can't do anything until I've drunk a few glasses of squash! Just one of the joys of pregnancy - mine continued after the birth, especially when I'd just settled down to breast feed so if you plan to BF be prepared for the mega thirst to continue!

I was also very thirsty - and from about 20 weeks it had to be orange juice. By the end I was getting through 2 litres a day.

I guess that's one reason I was never constipated.

Chunky that was me in my last pregnancy! Work colleagues thought I was mental necking 2 litres of sainsburys poshest OJ (always with bits!) before I'd even had breakfast! Not good for your tummy though!
