Have been diagnosed with sciatica and the pain is so severe in my right leg I have not been sleeping hardly. Doc prescribed co-dydramol which I am only using at night and avoiding in the day...also referred me for physio, any experience of taking this when pregnant? Worried about it!

i am no expert but i think the doc implied to me its when you use in pregnancy and for how long....( any stronger pain killers)

for instance by third tri - the brain is formed - etc and so in terms of that sort of damage you will be ok but if you go into labour susddenly is co dydramol anything that would make baby sleepy?

i personally had a few days of constant co dyramol and co co damol - at the end of 1st tri.

also as they cant trial pregnant ladies - they have to err on side of caution of course....

i woldnt worry too too much..

I had the same as you and took codrydamol for a few weeks earlier on in the pregnancy so try not to worry. Physio really helped also and have not needed pain relief since.

Thank you ladies, am only 14 weeks so really hope it goes or lessens in pain soon and I don't have it all the way through!! Not keen on taking medicines in pregnancy but at the same time the pain and lack of sleep is no good either!!

I take 60mg of dihydrocodeine 4 times a day, am now 24 weeks pregnant. All docs have told me the main risk is in the 3rd trimester. I have to taper my dose down from 34 weeks. The risks are that when the baby is born it can have breathing problems, and that it can suffer from withdrawal.

Last pregnancy DS came at 34 weeks when I had only just started to taper the dose off, and he did need a bit of help breathing for a day or so, but they said that was fairly normal for a 34+0 baby who had no steroid injections, and he had no signs of withdrawal.

I hope this is reassuring for you!

Not sure if this helps but I was given co-codamol after my section when breastfeeding so was going through to milk which was fine (no idea if relevant but thought I'd say...)

Be careful though.... I've never suffered constipation like it and my midwife thought it was the medication...

I get sciatica sometimes, but I also have kyphoscoliosis and disc degeneration, and an abnormal pelvis. Basically my spine's the wrong shape and totally knackered! One thing my physio taught me for sciatica is to lean at an angle sideways against a wall, so your shoulder's touching the wall and your feet are about a foot away, then gently bring your hips to the wall until your hip is touching the walk. If it's your left leg you've got sciatica in, then you lean with your left shoulder touching the well. Sometimes it just releases the pressure on the sciatic nerve. Sometimes it does nothing, but probably worth a shot!

Ooh, yes, codeine can cause awful constipation, best get some lactulose in too Grin
