Best place for basic baby clothes (vests, bodysuits etc)

Hoping for some advice from those with DC already! I'm looking to buy some basic multipack bodysuits, sleepsuits and vests for DC1 due in early december. I'd prefer cotton in white or plain colours rather than anything fancy.

There are loads of places that sell them and the prices seem to range a lot, I expect the quality does too! Have you found anywhere where the basics are soft and wash well but don't cost an arm and a leg?

I have heard good things about M&S, and Gap stuff seems to last reasonably well judging by charity shop purchases - but Gap is ££! Primark is cheap but don't know how it lasts?

The supermarkets usually have quite good ranges, particularly Asda and Tesco, I've used both and they both wash well and are very reasonably priced too.

Baby is not here yet, but I've bought a lot from matalan and sainsburys and they seem good quality

Meant to add, never liked Primark for DS, sizing always seems a bit off and doesn't last well IMHO.

Using Sainsburys vests and babygros for the second time for DS2. They wash really well and are very soft.

H&M by far the best, sensible designs (like newborn vests that don't pull poo all over the head and pop at the sides so don't bother the cord stump). H&M stuff lasts well and comes in sensible brights and darks that don't show stains so much

M&S mulitpacks of gros are actually one of the cheaper places per gro, and their babystuff washes well and is practical, don't assume primark is much cheaper, its fine but the M&S multipacks are cheap too and last better

gros that pop all the way up are better than ones that just pop at the legs incase you have a leaky poo baby

oh and tkmax is great, can get gro-company gro bags (some cheaper versions are filled with sweaty slidey plasticey material) and organic baby stuff for sale prices

I have bought mine in Asda both times.

With DD they washed really well but at the time I didnt have a tumble dryer so cant comment on that.

This time I priced around and Asda were again cheapest so I got them again (tight budget) but Im not sure if they are cotton.

I got some great pjs for me in M+S. The value range. So try them if you want better quality than Asda but dont want to go mad on price :)

Dd3 is 5 now so I'm a bit out of date but I did really rate the Gap newborn stuff. It washed and wore well and was very simple. Boots also used to be good.

If you don't mind second hand, car boot sales are brilliant. That way you can get decent quality stuff for next to no money.

NCT sales are also good. PILES of newborn stuff for very little.

All my vests are asda or Tesco used them for both DC and wash and wash and wash! The George babygrow's are fine too but I think m&s are better.

I would buy second hand, I really would! You don't have to worry about if they wash and wear well ... they grow out of them within weeks .

Boots. All ds' body suits and sleep suits came from there after I discovered them. Well priced, especially if buying in boots multi-sales and they wash v well and stay v soft. They fit ds perfectly but he's a big baby so bear that in mind re sizing. For newborn you will definitely need newborn size, not 0-3 months.

All mine came from sainsburys, mothercare (only on offer) and m&s. I found Asda vests very thin.
You will go through so many with newborn explosive poo that you need them to be as cheap as possible. Cute little cardigans are great to jazz up a plain white babygro

Am about to start dressing 3rd DC in Tesco vests and grows. They've also been used by my niece. Can't fault them for durability and comfort. Asda and mothercare have also lasted well.

Splash out on just a few 'special' grows for days when you have visitors or go out somewhere, don't bother for home. If your baby poos after every feed as my last one did you'll probably change their clothes a couple of times a day. Don't buy expensive vests with cute patterns on - no one ever sees them, especially if you have a winter baby as they will always have other clothes on top.

I bought the John Lewis white pyjamas and body suits in sizes from newborn to 1 year and I think they are really good. Also have some of the posh Tesco ones (F&F) and they are nice and soft, haven't been washed that many times yet though.

If GAP have an outlet store near you they're very cheap (vests for £1.99-ish), choice is usually rubbish. Although GAP have 60-90% off sales very often (DS is 9 months & there have been maybe 7 sales so far in his lifetime).

I really don't understand why the default colour for babies is white; everything that goes in or out of baby stains white!

Second what MoonHare said, cutesy baby clothes under a thick winter pramsuit aren't worth it!

M&S!!! White cotton sleepsuits and vests are about to be washed ready for DD number 3 and they still look like new. Have bought from other stores incl supermarkets but haven't found any that wash as well as M&S.

M&S or Tesco - both big though for the size imo.

I found Primark good when inbetween sizes as on the small side, mine have been used on 3 babies so have lasted me well!

M and s best quality, nice and thick cotton that keeps it shape. Sainsburys and primark ok too. I have bought from most places and none stand out as being crap.

Primark stuff has done DD, been passed to DN and then back again for DS.

John Lewis is fantastic, have had baby grow etc from tesco, sainsburys, mothercare, m and s and John Lewis were the only ones to survive poo explosions (DS) and über vomit (DD) and so multiple washes on high heats.

They are also a good shape for my long babies, mothercare and primark in particular were far too wide and short.

M and S are by far the best I think, though I'd wait until you see what shape baby before you buy all the bigger sizes.

I have got some second hand stuff at an NCT sale, but not lots - I didn't see the real basics there, it seemed to be more "special" stuff. Perhaps the basics were deemed too grim to sell

I have a gro bag from TK maxx!

I love baby Gap's stuff for "special" but agree just a few and it's only worth spending on the outside layer!
