New girl at work...

We had a new girl start last week and she's horrific. She's covering a maternity leave but I'll be gone before the person she's covering is back!
She's rude, talks down to me because I'm 10 years younger than her, she tells me I shouldn't eat foods I eat and should "calorie watch" as I'm putting weight on. But only 2 people in the building know I'm pregnant as I'm 8+2 weeks... She's turns her nose up if I ask her if she needs help too. I can't stand the food she eats like chorizo and leek soup, for that matter majority of the food she eats because it stinks the office out and sends me running to the toilet... I don't have morning sickness yet but the smell is disgusting!

I honestly thought it was hormones making me dislike her but as the week has progressed, I seriously want to punch her. She's making my life a misery and i actually enjoy work, until now... I don't want her covering my maternity leave either...

Anyone else had anything like this?

Sorry for the essay.

What are you eating that she's warning you against? Maybe if it's your 1st pg she is genuinely trying to be kind and help you if you are eating food it's recommended that pg women avoid - are you?

Many women gain a lot of weight during pg, again, it sounds like she's trying to help based on past experience. I'm sorry, but as a pg woman you seem to become public property and all sorts of people, strangers friends and everything in between will be offering you all sorts of (possibly unwanted) advice. It's par for the course for most pg women I think.

As for adding her smelly soup as a reason to dislike her, that sounds a bit unhinged. I understand many pg women are more sensitive to smell, but hardly a reason to dislike her.

She doesn't know I'm pregnant but she's just rude towards me. My boss asked me to show her something and she didn't even bother looking when I was trying to show her and explain.
I was eating a ham sandwich when she was like "that has loads of calories, and if i was you i would start counting yours cos you're not exactly skinny" I'm a size 10! I've done nothing but be nice since she's started and I'm not one to dislike somebody but she's so self-centred and always tries to do one better than everybody in the office.
She has no children, and lives on her own. There's no need to be rude towards someone when they're trying to help?
I'm going home everyday in such a mood thanks to her poor attitude! Also can I add, she's taken half of my stationary which I've bought out my own wages and my bottles of squash magically end up on her desk...

It's ridiculous.

I think the OP is saying that the new woman doesn't know the OP is pregnant, though.. In which case I don't think pregnancy has much to do with it at all, a PITA colleague is a PITA. Sympathy, OP, but no helpful advice, sorry. How much do you actually have to talk to her?

Splinters Sun 07-Oct-12 17:08:09

I think you should pointedly ask for your squash back when several other people are listening.

fuckadoodlepoopoo Sun 07-Oct-12 17:10:16

I would have a chat with your boss about her not even watching when when you show her stuff they've asked you to.

I would also mention the rude fattist (not that Im saying your fat) comments as she shouldn't be commenting on things so personal. Also the stationary theft etc.

Londonmrss Sun 07-Oct-12 17:13:01

Just sounds like one of those people...
Politely tell her you're not interested in her opinion or criticism.
Telling you that you should count calories is just rude in my opinion. I would tell her to fuck off.

reddwarf Sun 07-Oct-12 17:21:13

sorry, I misunderstood and thought you meant she knew you are pg

sleepybump Sun 07-Oct-12 17:38:20

Hopefully she'll still be on probation so you need to speak to your boss and tell them about her not listening to you/ not watching when you show her things you've been asked to do, and her comments towards you.

Dont say about the stinky food though...that'll just make it sound too personal when you talk to your boss smile

Hope things work out!

Pritchyx Sun 07-Oct-12 17:48:40

Thank lovelies! Just dreading to go in on Tuesday as I've escaped for a long weekend down to Cornwall.
She sits opposite me but if worst comes to worst I'll just not speak to her or point blank refuse!

Can't wait to see how many customers work of mine she's messed up while I've been gone and how much stuff of mine she's pinched!

Think I may have to have a meeting about her!

philbee Sun 07-Oct-12 18:25:38

What a pain. When she tells you what you should eat next could you say 'wow, you really have a bit of a problem about food, don't you?' I used to work with people like that, always commenting on what everyone was eating and talking about weight watchers, and I just used to try to make clear I wasn't interested in that kind of discussion. Forget her saying you're not skinny, it sounds like she's got a bit of an obsession and is just projecting it onto everyone else. Sorry though, not what you need.

PandaWatch Sun 07-Oct-12 19:20:42

Definitely sounds like she's projecting as philbee said. But you shouldn't have to tolerate someone speaking to you like that at any time, let alone at for. What if you had some kind of eating disorder?!

I would definitely speak to your boss but in the meantime use the old MN favourite if "did you mean to sound so rude?" grin

AnneH656 Sun 07-Oct-12 21:32:15

That is definitly someone who has food issues! She can royaly Fuck right off. Just think of what a total nob she is going to feel when you 'come out' as preggers. You will be happily rubbing your wee bump while she considers whether or not to throw up her lunch..

Purplecatti Mon 08-Oct-12 10:40:04

Smile sweetly and say 'it's OK, get it all off your chest. I'm a very understanding person and I realise I'm just a buffer for your own insecurities'

I'm an evil person and would probably say over the squash 'oh gosh you didn't drink THAT did you???? I add my laxatives to that bottle as it disguises the nasty taste'.

Other than that if she gets really out of hand hit her with the anti-bullying policy of your work. Negative comments about size pregnant or not are completely out of order and shouldn't be tolerated on any level. It is rude, spiteful and unprofessional.

DueinFeb Mon 08-Oct-12 11:20:33

People who are that RUDE and HORRID always come unstuck in the end! You can guarantee that you will not be the ONLY person who can't stand her or that she has been rude to. So I would say smile sweetly, sit back, and wait for karma (the shit to hit the fan). Don't worry yourself or stress yourself over someone so insignificant. You're a size 10 - the perfect 10!! So I am guessing this girl is incredibly insecure and jealous!! I doubt she'd be so rude to a woman who was a size 30!! Just breath, take a step back and wait for her to sabotage herself - you need to nothing. Keep smiling smile

Pritchyx Mon 08-Oct-12 12:02:51

I'm just dreading too go in! I've text one of the lads in the office to see if she's been a total pain while I've been off, and if she's taken the rest of my work off me so I'm left with nothing! Wonder if she's kept my seat warm too...
Cannot wait too go back!!! Not. Wonder if she'll make a comment on how dry and red my skins gone from an allergic reaction to chlorine yesterday too! Daft cow.

I'll keep you all updated anyway!

panicnotanymore Mon 08-Oct-12 12:56:36

This is the best thing ever - believe me. She's an unpleasant cow that no one in the office likes and she's covering for your maternity leave. Brilliant. Everyone will be desperate for you to come back, and no one will be in favour of side lining you and giving her a bigger role when you do.

The ones you need to worry about are the uber nice, uber efficient, over qualified, gorgeous looking maternity cover girls. Those ones will pinch your job.

Pritchyx Wed 10-Oct-12 14:06:13

I've been back a day and a half and I am already pulling my hair out! She's still got MY footrest/heater, which is constantly on and I feel the cold like no tomorrow but the office is already warm without the heater on! And she has a go if I switch it off, if she's cold she can put her "£130" coat on then! She's been bragging about money all day yesterday and today it's about how amazing the sex was with her new porn star boyfriend... And I am 100% serious.
Little bits of stationary has gone and so has my work so I'm now left to do the bits that nobody else wants to do! How lovely. My boss don't give two shits either. Urgh sad

AnneH656 Wed 10-Oct-12 19:36:28

i am starting to hate her for you......

bet her boyfriend has syphilis x

kissyfur Wed 10-Oct-12 19:40:48

Just go and take all your stuff that she has taken back! She sounds like a complete cow bag. Put some laxatives in her tea next time you make her a cup!

Stepawayfromthesweeties Wed 10-Oct-12 21:24:55

Definitely go and take your stuff bac, she sounds like a hideous witch!!! I work in HR and unfortunately you find morons like that in every workplace. We would have her in for a chat and remind her that she's come into an established team that she needs to stop rubbing people up the wrong way and then reinforce that she has a probationary period and if she doesn't pull her socks up she might not get past her probationary period. If your boss won't listen, could you speak to someone else about it or maybe HR? Also, her boyfriend is probably inflatable and doesn't actually exist ;0) x
