14 weeks pregnant, vomiting all day, getting dehydrated?

Looking for some advice please.

As I said in my thread title, I'm 14 weeks pregnant and up until now have only had nausea rather than sickness. But I've been throwing up since 9am and can't keep anything down, not even sips of fluid. I've got a headache and dry lips and a very sore tummy from all the heaving.

I rang the out-of-ours service who told me to ring the midwives, so called them. They said to go to A&E if I was feeling dehydrated but couldn't say how long to "tough it out". The biggest problem with going to hospital is we have a 17 month old DS and I'd therefore have to go on my own (and I really don't want to vomit all over my car).

Do I wait until the morning or go now?

Do you have an OOH GP department that you could go to? There will probably be less of a waiting time and they will be able to do the necessary tests to assess your condition.

It might be worth investing in some urinalysis dipsticks to test your urine for ketones at home and that might give you a better indication of when to go to A&E.

Otherwise it just depends on how you feel. I left it until I physically couldn't walk and needed an ambulance to take me to A&E :S so my advice is don't leave it that long if you feel it's coming to that

Thanks Amy - out of hours GP walk-in closes at 5 and is an hour's drive away. No idea where I'd get wee sticks from at this time? Any tips?

You could try ice cubes, fruit ice lollies, fizzy water through a straw.

I had hyperemesis with all my pregnancies and these things helped me to keep a little fluid down, much better than sipping plain water, which always came straight back up again.

It might tide you over until morning?

Also - sleep was the only thing that helped the constant nausea. If you can manage to get to sleep, you might feel a little better.

Sorry you are suffering, it really is the most awful thing. Sad

I was going to suggest ice lollies but if you can't keep them down, you need medical attention. Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks ladies, have sent DH out for ice lollies (though just thrown up my lemonade sips from the past hour). This is rubbish! I feel awful for those who have hyperemesis.

OP- I think you might mean the walk in services- there should be a 24 hr GP service. If you ring up your regular GP, they usually have an extra number for you to contact on the recorded message (that's what they have in all the GPs in my area). NHS Direct are also available 24/7 on 08454647 and they can direct you to the most appropriate services as well as give you health advice.

Otherwise ice lollies, jelly and coca cola were helpful. Eating 'wet food' was also helpful (such as water melons, custard and cream).

Thanks so much for the ice lolly tip - I've kept two down, and some lemonade, and just been nibbling on a cracker. Haven't been sick for over 12 hours. Still feel awful, but not so dehydrated now. I knew I could rely on the wisdom of Mumsnet!

Really glad to hear it! I find if I have an ice lolly it enables me to eat a bit.
