Gestation sac

Hi guys,

After having so much help from another thread I started I just wanted to see if anyone knew the correct measurements for a gestation sac.

I had a scan on Wednesday at 5+2 weeks but the measurements for the sac came out at 5.4mm x 5.2mm. I cant work it out and from the few posts I have seen on google its small for a 5 week baby?

The nurse said all was looking good with the sac and it was in the right place but I know I was defo over the 5 week stage.

Any advice would be appreciated.

First of all Step away from Dr google!

I was told by the sonographer that measuring something so small is more like an art than a precise science at that stage, they are only really interested in looking for a heart beat and to make sure everything is in the right place rather than getting completely accurate measurements - or at least that's what they said at my 6 week scan.

I also had two 12 week scans only several days apart because my hubby had to leave for work. The private scan measured the baby at 5.44 cms and then three days later the NHS measured the baby at 6.25cms - when I asked the Midwife she said that small discrepancies are expected and that it's difficult to measure something so small, if I'd gone back the next day I probably would have had a slightly different measurement again.

Please try and relax - I know easier said than done but it is the position at five weeks that's more important than anything else.

Could you book a private scan for round about 6 weeks? They should be able to find the heartbeat then and that's really the most reassuring thing rather than size at this point.

I'm really surprised they even gave you the measurements so early on.

Try and relax xx

Thank you for replying to me. I have another scan in 2 weeks time its just the wait :(.
I very stupidly asked for a copy of the results and to be honest I should never of asked for them. The lady said all was looking good there's a baby there but my notes read.

Fetal Heartbeat: not seen Gestation 0 weeks 0 days ( I take this as being as it was far to early.

The uterus appears normal in size and contains a tiny gestation sac measuring approx 4-5 weeks (0.54 x 0.52 cm)

It is to early to demonstrate a viable pregnancy within.

Just reading that has caused me so much worry as I know I was just over 5 weeks.

I know google is so bad I didnt sleep to well last night worrying but there are some lovely people on here that were able to reassure me.

Thank you again for taking the time to get back back to its much appreciated :)

Hi keys hope you are feeling ok. I also had one early scan and then had to go back later. At my earliest early scan, it was too early to see a heartbeat. They didn't share any measurements with me but just said everything was where it should be at this stage! I know what it's like waiting for the second scan and it is impossible not to worry but I am sure that there is nothing to worry about. I have read on here about some early pregnancy units that won't even scan people until they are at least 6/7 weeks. I counted down the number of sleeps from one scan to the next and I found that it helped having weekends as they seemed to make the time go by quicker!

The wait is horrible, I've had a scan every two weeks until 12 weeks (from six weeks onwards) and each time one is finished I started stressing until the next one.

Woody - I live in one of those areas the earliest my EPU would scan me after bleeding was 61/2 weeks, I had bleeding at five weeks so the wait felt like forever.

Keys the time will pass just try and organise some events or outings, anything to make the time pass faster.

I hope you will come back and keep us posted!

hugs x

I had a gestation sac that at 5+ weeks was told was so small, my pregnancy wasn't viable. I was also told this at 7+ weeks, and offered a termination. And again at 9+ weeks. By 12 weeks, my baby measured perfect for dates.

My 'non-viable pregnancy' that I was told to terminate is now a very active 18mo toddler. Currently running around the front room causing havoc.

I'm glad I didn't listen to the sonographer and consultant.

I had a scan at 5 + 5 and was carrying twins and they measured 3mm each. Now they are 4.5 years old so don't worry at that early stage :)
As someone said it's very difficult to be that accurate.

Check out this link. I did a lot of research after my miscarriage as I was given poor information by the sonographer and consultant after my 8 week scan. The paper shows the measurements for the 5th, 50th and 95th percentile from 6 to 10 weeks gestation for CRL, GSD, heart rate and YSD.

Wow thhank you so much for that hun. Ive had a little read through but i'm going to put my other littlen to bed in a bit so can sit down and read it.

Im very sorry to hear about your loss hun :( I know how you feel.

It looks a little confusing the chart as I only know my CRL measurement is 7.5 mm. So confusing.

Thank you very much again for taking the time to do this for me. I appreciate it very much xx

What were the measurements for the gestational sac diameter and yolk sack diameter? They may be measuring at 7+4 which may be why she wrote what she did. I think that could be a good sign? For me the GSD and YSD were measuring behind the CRL which meant the sac was tight around the baby which is why I miscarried. In your case it seems the baby just needs to catch up a bit and from reading on Mumsnet it seems these things can often sort themselves out. Wishing you all the best.

Awww so sorry to hear that ;( (hugs) I lost a baby around 6 weeks I dont think I was as far gone as you as there was no sac visabile. But still either way just as heartbreaking. The gestation sac and yolk sac look massive compared to the baby. x

It's probable that the g sac and yolk sac weren't measured if a fetal pole with hb could be seen. It's easy to say not to worry about dates at this early stage but try not to. It is not accurate to date a pregnancy at this stage which is why you have a dating scan at around 12 weeks. The gestational age you have been given will be just a rough idea, how far out is it by your dates?

Congratulations btw x

Thanks hun.

She said im around 6 weeks 4 days and I should be 7 weeks 4 days. But on my form she has put on it still the gestation is 7 weeks 4 days. So confusing. I have looked it up as was worried after having last mc and seems small for a 7+ week baby.
Im prob worrying over nothing. I know it sounds silly as well but my little girl's birthday is 9th April. Im due on the 30th March according to my LMP. I really want them to have different birthdays. Also the not knowing is the worst and the confusion.

Thank you again for replying to my post it means alot xx

Sorry wrote the above before you posted. According to the paper a 7.5mm CRL is approx equivalent to 48 days gestation at the 50th percentile or 51 days at the 5th percentile and you were given a date of 53 days or 7+4 (which I am assuming is the sac date) So I think that means the baby is only 2-5 days behind your dates. I must stress though that I could completely wrong but that's how I've understood it.

That sounds right though hun thank you very much for looking into that for me. My last LMP was 23rd June. I think I convinced as only had intercourse on the 8th and 9th July sorry for tmi. So either my little bean took longer to settle into the egg or its the gestation sac measuring 7+4 weeks.I wish I knew how big the gestation sac was now.

Thank you very much hun. I will let u know in 4 weeks how I get on.

You've helped put my mind at ease so thank you hun. xxxx
