Hi all, I am 19 years old and fit and healthy. I have been thinking I am pregnant for about 4 months now but I just can't seem to do a positive hpt!! I have all the symptoms and my belly is growing rapidly... My lmp was 1st dec and I have had very light irregular spotting since. I have been feeling movement in my tummy for about 2 months and it has been getting stronger every day. It is now to the point that I can feel movement on the outside now. My best friend (who is 38 weeks pg with her first) has felt it too and she knows what it feels like. I have always had a hormone imbalance and I am wondering if this is why I cant get a positive??!! Please help me... I would love to have a baby but I don't know what to make of it all. As I am typing this my stomach is doing somersaults and I can feel a pushing sensation in my ribs!!!! Sometimes it is very painful when the little mystery gets my ribs... Sorry for writing an essay for you all but I wanted to get as much detail as possible in to make it easier for you to help me. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this.

You really need to go to the doctors, you will need to have scans and check-ups and register with a midwife. Do you live wiht your parents? Can you tell your mum?

Your gp can tell you with a blood test or a scan, some women just don't get positives on a stick. (also is it true that after so many weeks the pg tests don't work any more?)

Pregnancy tests look for a particular hormone that is not present after about 12 weeks.

Go to your GP

Thanks Ellellie I thought I had read that but didn't want to say as fact without being sure!

I still got a positive pregnancy test at 36 weeks pregnant (there was one left going out of date! I was curious ... Blush )

I'd be very surprised if you were. With your first, it's highly unlikely you'd have been feeling movement from 12 weeks ish - more like 18+.

I do agree, though, that you need to go to the doctor to see where your AWOL periods are. I could be wrong, you may be pregnant, but it doesn't sound right to me. Good luck!

Sorry, that's not correct about pregnancy tests not working after 12 weeks. The hCG levels are much lower after this point, but they it doesn't disappear and should still be present in high enough levels to be picked up by a pregnancy test.

OP you really should go to the doctor. There are other reasons why you might be getting these symptoms other than pregnancy.

Regarding hcg, The levels do not go down significantly but the "HOOK EFFECT" can take place after about 10 weeks, where the hcg is high and this makes the test unable to cope with the amount of hcg and so therefore gives a false negative. It means that you might get a false negative, but you might still get a positive, but it all depends on the test. One way to check for the hook effect is to dilute the urine sample, and if then it gives a positive you have the answer!

Also there are some women who do not metabolise the hcg in some pregnancies and so never get a positive test (this can be true of the blood test as well as the urine test). My mum and my sister each had a pregnancy where this happened. My sister was 4 months pregnant before finally a scan confirmed the pregnancy, for which she never managed to get a positive test.

As for the OP - go to the gp, they can feel your stomach and determine if your uterus is enlarged and they will send you for an ultrasound scan if it is. Otherwise they will investigate your cycles having gone astray.

willitbe I must have gotten my information mixed up (was told ages ago by a midwife about false negatives after the first trimester)

Hoping OP has been to her GP by now
