Pregnancy

19 weeks and gained 18lbs

Wow I gave myself one hell of a shock tonight when I stepped on the scales, I'm 19 weeks and I've gained 18lbs!

This is horrendous, I'm 5ft8 and I was already 13st before I got pregnant, so I'm scared I'm going to become obese and develop gestational diabetes.

Is it safe to diet in pregnancy? Obviously not an extreme one, but I need to lose some of this weight as it's not healthy :(

I'm having the opposite problem - I'm 22 weeks and I haven't gained any weight at all. I don't know how worried to be. The bump is def growing and baby matched dates at 20 week scan. Just seems wrong.

It feels like pregnancy is a cause for worry no matter what happens!

There's a really good link in this thread which lets you check weigh gain. :)

Thanks for that link poppy, it confirms I'm putting too much on too quickly lol.

I wouldn't worry stargirl, if baby is healthy on the scan then I doubt very much there will be any problems

Looks like diet time for me then!

I know slimming world will accept you while pregnant, basically to help you with eating healthier and so you can try not to gain too much weight. if you are concerned speak to your midwife about it, if it's any help, I gained 5 stone during my pregnancy and DS was perfectly healthy (only anecdotal I know, but just because you gain a lot doesn't automatically mean problems!) although you were slightly above a healthy weight for your height to start with, you are far from obese, I think they would have mentioned at your booking appt if there was any concerns or if you needed to be careful how much weight you put on.

I would talk to your midwife about getting a healthy eating plan and whether she thinks it is a cause for concern.

I agree, speak to your midwife :)

Speak to your MW or GP. That is a lot of weight. I put on a huge amount with DC1 and losing the weight afterwards was very very very hard. You should be referred to a dietician and checked for any problems such as thyroid etc. Don't just ignore it or think that the weight will fall off once baby arrives, it's better to try to address it now. You have my sympathies though it just seems some women have an easier time than others with weight in pregnancy and I don't think the reasons behind it are understood.

Weight Watchers won't let you join when pregnant, bit their online tool is a fantastic way to track what you eat and includes daily goals to check off (like 5 a day).

If you join online, put all your normal details in and they'll give you a number of points per day. Then change your settings in your profile to 'maintain' as this assumes you've reached your goal weight, but actually gives you a big boost to your daily points. Once in maintain mode it's a great motivator and healthy eating tracker.

After the baby is born you can switch to the weight loss 'breastfeed' option which also gives you a points boost to ensure you're getting enough calories to feed the baby.

Good luck!

You could track your calories.

Go to www.myfitnesspal.com/.

You put all your details in and it will tell you how many calories you need to maintain or perhaps lose 1/2lb a week?
I've set mine to lose 1/2lb a week so I don't think I'm undereating. I often have a takeaway on the weekend anyway so there's no way I'm eating too few cals.
I just don't want to gain loads of weight (or any fat weight if I'm honest. I was already 2 stone overweight before I got pregnant).

Also go for walks regularly.

I was doing slimming world but I can't always make it to the meetings and I find calorie counting much easier and more flexible.

You shouldn't be aiming to lose weight while pregnant, and you can't stop weight gain at this stage because it has been too fast so far.
Have a think about why you have put weight on so quickly, and try to address that so that weight gain will not continue at the same rate. The baby needs a steady supply of nutrients, so make sure everything you do eat is nutritious, I.e. oily fish, nuts and seeds, yoghurts and milk, lean non processed protein etc. Really a few pounds here or there doesn't matter, it's about making sure the baby is getting the best possible diet!

Hey thanks everyone for all the comments and tips, think I'm not going to diet but I will switch to more healthy, nutritious food and cut out the junk. I'm going to go swimming aswell!
Guess I have just been eating and not thinking about what it's doing to my body, I've never been skinny, but this is ridiculous and I know its my own fault.
I'm also going to visit my midwife and ask for her advice and maybe ask about my thyroid, I never considered that before.
Thanks all :) xx

I agree with the poster to raise issue with MW - my friend put on loads of weight in 1st trimester and was diagnosed with gestational diabetes in the second trimester. Not sure what was cause and what was effect though. She was able to control weight gain over the rest of the pregnancy simply by making a few healthy eating choices (like avoiding fried food for example) under guidance of a nuitritionist.

I got a similar shock when went for 12 week scan. I got weighed at 2 weeks and was 10st 4lb (I'm 5ft 7). I'm now 11 st 3lb. This is by far the heaviest I've been and my boobs are just ridiculous. Already gone up two full cup sizes and very sore. I was 36DD to start with and now F cup. Rock!
