Cervical polyp in Pregnancy (17 weeks)

Hi all,

Have had on and off problems with 'vaginal pressure' / odd discharges over last few weeks (swabs came back clear of infection), then 2 incidents of brown spotting in the last week. Tonight after speculum exam doc said I had a tiny cervical polyp which may have caused the spotting.

Has anyone else had a cervical polyp in pregnancy? And did it cause any problems? "Dr Google" (:o) seems to suggest that some cause no problems but others can get bigger and bleed quite a lot so was just wondering if anyone has experience of this? Please feel free to PM if you don't want to share with the whole world :)

Hi I was found to have one in this pregnancy when I experienced bleeding from 6 weeks until about 14/15 weeks, mine seem to stop when my cervix moved up, haven't had any problems since (touch wood!) I would say if yours has just started to cause you problems it may cause you a bit more bleeding, but if your concerned at any time speak to the mw, hopefully you'll start if not already feeling baby move which should re-assure you a little, but don't feel guilty for ever getting bleeding checked out :)

hi angelico i have had pink and brown spotting on and off throughout - now 33 weeks. they didn't know what it was - last time i had an internal for possible amniotic fluid leakage (it wasn't)! they popped everything they needed on the bed beside me and I remarked, is that a torch? they had a gigantic torch there! when they removed the speculum there was fresh blood on it and I shit myself, the doc said nothing to worry about, but i do have a polyp. nothing more said and such a relief to be honest to know where the bleeding had come from, haven't had any for a couple of weeks, and am so so so happy to be at 33 weeks - sigh.... wishing you well

Thanks Surf - glad you're hanging in there - roll on 33 weeks! :o I'm still at that stage where if anything happens it's game over for the bean so just can't wait to get a bit further on. Good luck! :) x

Hi, I'd like to revive this thread. Just found out I have a 0.5cm polyp and I'm almost 20 weeks pregnant. Anyone else experienced this? The one thing I'm worried about is infection and then prem labour.

Hi Smile been to triage this morning after intermittent bleeding since 18 weeks pregnant (now 22) they have found the cause to be a polyp or so they think. This is my 2nd pregnancy. Has anyone else had the same?
What makes it more worrying for my is I had pre cancerous cervical cells removed and the gynaecologist who diagnosed it as polyps said she is certain it's not cancer which is a relief but still can't help but worry. I am the worlds biggest worried at the best of time last anyway Blush just looking for people who have had a similar thing?

Hi

I had a massive cervical polyp diagnosed after a trip to A&E brought on by some bleeding. I was 19 weeks.

I ended up having it removed surgically. It was all fine, if a very stressful at the time. I was told that if it was small they could clip it off in a day clinic- only a five minute procedure. Unfortunately, mine was too big (like over an inch long!) and I had to be admitted.

Six weeks later there's no infection and all is going well. The most stressful part at the time was the lack of info online to reassure me. It seems it doesn't happen very often or people don't post about it. Message me if you want to ask anything. Smile

Hi everyone I know this is old but just wanted to share my experience with people searching for answers !

I had three heavy bleeds which sent me to ER where I was told pregancy likely wasn't viable and to expect miscarriage as numbers also low ! To cut a long story short turns out I am actually pregnant with twins and it was a large cervical polyp which was only discovered after I saw it poking out of my vagina when I went to the toilet ! ( so gross and really scary) anyway they told me they wanted to leave it.
I was bleeding everyday and having horrible yellow discharge. Went back to ER very distressed where I was sent to gynae where they informed me it was so large I would need surgery to remove it. The consultant decided she would like to double check and because the stalk was thin she removed it there and then ! She removed it with forceps which caused a little bleeding and cramping initially which died down after an hour or so
I am 9 weeks along and finally able to enjoy my pregnancy
! No further bleeding and babies are great with two strong heartbeats. They are so strong sticking in there so proud of them!

Hopefully there’s still people using this thread to help me out.
I’m 7 weeks pregnant and started with some odd looking, jelly like blood. I phone my midwife and she books me in for a scan where they tell me the blood isn’t coming from the baby luckily, but I do have a polyp.
After this the blood starts getting heavier every day to the point I’m now wearing a pad (and thinking the worst) I’m not filling a pad but it’s scary every time I wipe and see blood!
I’ve asked gynae how much are the supposed to bleed and they just say it varies. Helpful!
I’m booked in for another scan but I can’t help but think the worst 😭
Is there anyone going through this who can comment on the amount of blood they lost please!
Much appreciated!

Hi there !

I have so much sympathy with your situation it is really scary to see blood everytime you wipe ! I was filling a pad every 4 hours ( i normally changed before then) i also had a tonne of yellow discharge it was awful and not helping my morning sickness 🤢 i just want to reassure you that I'm now 21 weeks with my twins and I'm sure everything will be okay for you too ! Ask them what they plan on doing for you as some doctors are really reluctant to remove them but they will continue to grow if not removed.

Thank you so much!
I’ve got a scan booked for tomorrow morning so fingers crossed it’s good news!
I’m trying my hardest to stay positive but it’s so hard. I’ve got no cramping but I am passing blood clots, not huge, but big enough to look worrying.
I don’t wish this fear on anyone!
Has your bleeding stopped now? And if so how long did it go on for?

I bleed the whole time I had the polyp so from about 5 weeks pregnant until they removed it at 9 weeks ! No bleeding whatsoever since luckily ! Yes I also passed clots its so frightening when all you can see on the internet is about miscarriage :/ let me know how you get on tomorrow yourll be in my thoughts x

It was bad new for me :(
They scanned me and where as before they could see an embryo, they couldn’t see anything this time round. They took me to one side and said the sac had grown quite a bit so they wanted me to go back next week to scan again just to be on the safe side. Turns out I didn’t have a polyp, it was a fibroid somewhere in my womb. Not long after I got home I was pouring with blood to the point where I just sat in the bath in absolute agony!
(When people say you know when you’re miscarrying, they’re not kidding!)
Hopefully next time will be a better outcome :(

Funnily enough I have had lots of spotting and 1 red bleed, been spotting and passing brown mucus for over a week now (10w), but also when i was 5 and 6 w. I had an internal scan after the big bleed and he said about an polyp on my left side but he didnt say that could be causing the bleeding. I have to tell them when I have my 12w scan so they can take a better look. Wish the bleeding would just stop, but hopefully it is just a polyp and nothing more serious

Hi, I just want to share my story about cervical polyp in pregnancy. I'm 34 weeks now. My first bleeding episode was on week 26th. First time I bleed, the ObGyn took ultrasound and checked me down there to know the source of the bleeding. He didn't see any polyp and so he concluded that it was because of my placenta previa (the low lying placenta). Just a week before that, I went to a fetomaternal specialist (the very famous and respectable one in my country) to get the 4D anatomy scan and he didn' t mention any abnormality, he was just warned me about my placenta previa, but nothing about polyp or any abnormal lesion.

Since then, I had 5 bleeding episodes which usually stopped for hours or a day, but the last one (on week 33rd) was the massive one: non stop heavy bleeding, very big clots, etc. I was hospitalized for 3 days and continued to bleed for 3 more days (so it was 6 days in total). My baby's been healthy all the way.

When I was hospitalized, I was referred to a fetomaternal specialist (not the one before). He found out that I have a big cervical polyp (3-4cm) and that is the source of my bleeding! He said that it can be cleared during labor (have to get c-section).

He said there was possibility that the polyp could bleed again and not to worry about it because it wouldn't affect the baby but he asked me to visit him once a week to make sure everything is okay until my due date.

I was confused, I've been to 2 obgyn and 1 fetomaternal specialist before but they couldn't see it all this time! Well, maybe it's growing bigger now than before so they didn't notice. But a part of me is relieved that it's not placental bleeding.

Now I'm in bedrest (only allowed to go to the bathroom) and using a wheelchair whenever I go to my weekly check up. Hopefully everything is smooth as planned.

@Nasradj hi, hope you see this. I know it was a while ago that you posted but I've had a similar thing today. Im 11 week's tomorrow. Had a private scan at 8 weeks, all ok. This is my third baby and third pregnancy. Didn't bleed at all with my other 2. No bleeding at all in this pregnancy until this morning. After a number 2 I noticed on wiping my front that there was pink tinged CM on the tissue. Only a really small amount. It was on and off all day then about an hour ago I went and now it's more red than pink and there is more of it. Still only when I wipe and no pain as yet. Do you mind me asking how your pregnancy progressed?

Hey there @ArthurandJessie, may I ask if your cervical polyp was hanging out from ur cervix entrance? I’m 6 weeks pregnant and just found out I have it hanging out right at my cervix entrance. It is freaking me out and I’m so afraid if I will miscarry :( thanks in advance!!

Hey ! So sorry your going through this too it's such a stressful time! Yes it was hanging down it was very prominant just before it got removed I actually had to wiggle to move it to sit down comfortably 🤢 I'm 32 weeks now with my twin boys and has not caused any with my cervix since being removed :) I hope that helps x

@ArthurandJessie thank u so much for ur reply!! So happy for you that things worked out for your twin boys. I’m hoping to have mine removed ASAP too. My gynae has no idea what to do with it so I’m thinking of getting a second opinion... did the polyp cause ur cervix to be slightly open since it’s hanging out?

Report
ArthurandJessie · 10/04/2020 07:50

That's a good idea ! They wanted to leave mine but it just kept growing and luckily the consultant was in that day and wanted to have a look ! I know some they have to remove surgically but mine the stalk where it attached to the cervix was very thin even though the polyp itself was large if that makes since so she was able to twist it off 🤢 it had no impact on my cervix being slightly open or anything as it was attached to the outside wall of the cervix and hung down out of the vaginal opening !
