What's your morning sickness remedies?

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 07/03/2012 19:44

I've started to get sickness over the past couple of days. Starts in the afternoon and goes for the rest of the day.

With ds1 it wasn't so bad.
With ds2 it was horrific but was able to rest a lot which helped, and took things easy, and forcing little and often food down.

But this time I have ds2 to look after, we're decorating as the house is going on the market in two weeks, got to do the school runs, and have a puppy too now!

What worked for you?

Any specific food? Drinks? Sachets? Potions? Bracelets, acupuncture, anything I could try???

Drugs. And lots of 'em Grin Cyclizine, Stemetil - visit your doctor, have a cry, and get some nice tablets. I could barely function without them but managed to only take 2 days off work my entire pregnancy with them. (DD is now 6 weeks old and absolutely fine).

However, if you don't want to go down that route then I found avoiding acidic foods helped - less nasty when you do bring it back up. Tomatoes and peppers were awful for me; Weetabix and toast were my staples for weeks on end.

Decaff coffee - the only drink I've found I can have in the morning which doesn't make me heave once I walk out the front door. And it took unti lI was 5 1/2 months to finally try a cuppa and find that out.

When I had it , I worked out a way of having it all up in the morning, drink plenty water during the night, then as your getting ready in the morning you'll get the sick tug, and run to the loo, get your sick up before you've eaten it hurts less.

obviosuly it may not be for everyone.

Just having something in your stomach, apparently its the hormones that make the baby stick that irritates the stomach. I just munched on low calorie fillers like rice cakes, just to avoid having an empty tum. Twas years ago tho!

Try nevasic. It's a cd/app which you listen to and it worked wonders for me.

mine's also starting in the afternoon, worsening into evening.

i found it was more a blood sugar thing. if i let my bsugar dip too low, i feel nauseous, sometimes enough to vom. so my approach is to eat little and often all through the day.

i stick to bland food in small portions. breakfast cereal is good because it's fortified, plus you usually have it with milk which is always good (provided you're not lactose intolerant etc.). also jelly, instant vanilla/butterscotch pudding, grapes, small milkshakes made with quality ice cream, marmite toast, even homemade chips.

they do say that morning sickness tends to include aversions to foods with a high bacterial load... so don't try to eat something that nauseates you just because it's "good" for you.

I know it's an old wives tale but I really think that ginger helps.
I'm trying to steer clear of munching through a pack of ginger biscuits every day though.
I found these recipes on another forum that I was scouring for remedies

Travel sickness bands
Box of crackers in your handbag, to be eaten on an almost constant basis.
Reating something LITERALLY as soon as you wake/get up in the morning, even if just a plain cracker or dry bread
Eating what you can and not worrying about nutrition too much. I went RIGHT off veg, to the point where even the thought of them made me nauseous, and I'm a big veg eater normally. Spent ages trying to force myself to eat broccoli 'for the baby' and just felt miserable. Gave up and ate whatever fruit I could face instead (and biscuits).

Not 'just' an old wives' tale, ginger is a proven anti-nausea remedy, as is peppermint (hence extra strong mints will help too). I used to eat crystallised ginger, ginger biscuits and drink ginger beer / ale; also second the posters saying never to let yourself get too hungry, I used to snack all the time on rice cakes & ginger oatcakes and it really did help.

Oatcakes and smoothies. Godsends the pair of them...

Snack snack snack. Eating little and often really helped me. If I ate something the instant I woke and then lay back down for a few mins, it would help a lot. Then I'd have half a banana for "breakfast" then another half a couple of hours later, then some crips and then lunch. By then I was normally feeling a little better. If I got hungry it was all over. I swore by fiery ginger beer too.

Hope it passes soon for you OP

Cans of Rio, space raiders and macaroni cheese.
But you can guarantee that they won't work next time Grin

Acupuncture is meant to work for a lot of women, particularly if combined with anti-sickness tablets. I found sucking boiled sweets helped a little (cola cubes) and when I was struggling to drink I found iced water with a ton of ice cubes and a slice of lemon the only thing I could get down - the cold and the citrus really helped.
